This wasnt the best dining experience. When we first walked in, the restaurant had a nice atmosphere, but it was pretty much empty, and this was at 7:00pm on a Friday. We were seated, but it took 10-15 minutes for our waiter to come. He did not introduced himself and asked us immediately if we wanted drinks. We asked for water. We waited a few minutes, and he didnt return, so we decided that the blue bottles of water that were placed at each table were the only water available, so we opened one. When he finally came back with the chips, which was at least 10 minutes later, we ordered our meals. There was still no water in sight. Another sign that the blue bottles were the only water at the restaurant. The food came fast, and it was good. I cant complain about that. The chicken enchilada with mole sauce was great! Our waiter did not come and check on us during the meal, and he didnt come back until another waiter, seeing that we had been finished with our meals for a while, came and took our plates. The best part was when the check arrived. The bill was A LOT higher than expected because the blue bottles of water with which we were provided were $6 A BOTTLE. These were small bottles of water, and my boyfriend and I drank two during the meal. We had to take a bottle off of another table in order to get more water because our waiter, of course, was nowhere to be seen. All in all, I was disappointed with Casa Romeros customer service and dishonesty with the water. I may give Casa Romero a second chance, however, because of its high quality food.

Let me start by saying we are from California. That said, our take on Mexican food might be a little different than most of the folks that stop here. The atmosphere is awesome!! Beautiful design and very comfortable! The waiter was professional but not friendly, not our preference, but also not our town. We had the green enchiladas (Enchiladas Verdes), the chicken was fresh and tasted like plain unseasoned chicken, the tomatillo sauce had no complexity or depth. The tortilla had a chewy firmness we found unusual and unwelcome. The presentation was basic, a small amount of rice and a small amount of refried beans, neither of which was memorable. For the price, we had expected upscale Mexican food, what we received was underwhelming. The mojito was good! I asked for it a bit sweet and it was perfect! I think if you are from Boston this might be the best Mexican restaurant ever (our brother in law would probably love it, he likes things bland). Perhaps other menu items have more complex flavors.

Not nearly as hard to find as people want you to think - head north on Gloucester from Newbury and its on your left, the entrance is in that first alley you come to. Once you find it, youre transported to the Mexico that the chef/owner left decades ago to start his PhD at Harvard. Fortunately for us, the dinners he threw for his friends because he was unable to find the food of his him anywhere in town, those friends convinced him of his true calling. The food is all excellent at all hours, but if youre going to go to only one meal, go to brunch. It is one of the most affordable meals in the whole city, let alone the Back Bay. 3 courses. Sit on the inner patio and youll forget where you are. And if youre still among those who think Mexican food is 5 different ingredients in different forms, get the pozole first. A pork stew in an intensely flavorful broth served with various condiments; you will wish the bowl never ended

This review has good and bad. The salsa, pork tamales and Mexican salad were great. The refried beans and rice were nothing stellar. One thing that disturbed my wife and I. We explained that my wife has a dairy allergy, yet her meal came with cheese on the refried beans. We sent it back. The waiter merely removed the beans from the plate. There were still remnants of cheese on the plate. My wife ate around it. Simply put, I dont think the staff understands what is in the food they serve and the impact of an allergy. Interesting, the signature pork dish, I thought too sweet and told the manager (?). I just wouldnt order it again. Her apology was a churro....unfortunately the waiter was unsure if the desert had dairy in it. I wish the restaurant well, but being cavalier about allergies is dangerous in my opinion.

Casa Romero does not disappoint. The entrance is in an alleyway off of Newbury Street, which makes it feel like somewhere special right from the start. You have to *know* where it is to go there. Its the most authentic Mexican food Ive had in Boston, and it is wonderful. The staff is super friendly, there are several vegetarian entree options (I always come back to the vegetarian enchiladas, packed with black beans and drizzled with crema), the house margarita will knock your socks off (you really only need one!), and the tres leches cake? Insanely delicious. Reservations are a necessity, as the restaurant can be packed on even a Tuesday evening -- but trust me, youll want to plan enough ahead to make the reservation and get yourself a table. You wont be sorry.

Not very good based on price. We went on new years eve and they had a fixed menu which $50/person, but there was 5 courses so i guess its reasonable, which we werent expecting so we decided to leave, however they said that we could just order dishes off the fixed menu and not have to buy the whole thing, so we stayed. This is where it gets bad though. I ordered an enchilada dish which came out to me cold and soggy. There were two, they were small , about an inch and half in diameter and about 6in long. This dish also cost me about $22. It shouldve cost somewhere between $10-$15 if it was supposed to be 1/5 of the 5 courses.

I can only speak to my take out experience. Ill first start with where I am coming from. Moved to Boston about a year ago from Chicago. Its not fair to compare the two but the bad experiences in Boston are getting out of control. High prices, crappy service, crappy decor, and insipid food. This food was not good at all and very expensive. Two steak tacos for $14.95 and get this, it does not come with anything other than greasy tortillas they come in. Bell peppers on a steak taco? Are they trying to make it taste like a pizza?! Youre better off going to Taco Bell to feel just as bad for cheaper.

Food was ok, not unique. Drinks were ok, but reasonably priced. Service was poor. The server was not very helpful. Towards the end of of meal, the manager asked us to leave because they had a larger group coming in and needed the table. He could have handled his need for a table much more effectively. There were empty tables on either side of us. There were two groups that were there before us and still dining. This was after spending about $200 for a party of 4 and dining for about 2 hours. We were not loud or anything unusual...Overall, bad experience and wont go again.

Stepped out of the busy, 5:00 traffic, Boston streets on a cold, rainy day into this warm and inviting little place with my significant other and it was very authentic Mexican look as you walked into bold colors of pink, yellow, and blue tiles outlined with dark brown stained wood. We sat in a far corner able to see a painting that looked like something I might find if I ever venture to Mexico itself. The food was as comforting and wonderful as the atmosphere. I had the verde enchiladas and they were awesome! Also try the passion fruit juice is you have a sweet tooth.
