2013: For some reason, Google deems this review inapprorpiate and has blocked it. Why? (Because its about a town called XXXXXXX, perhaps? Look it up on Google Maps, Google.) A neat bicycling destination. About two years ago, a coworker, after finding out I had started riding my bike again, asked me if Id ever done the "XXXXXXX run" for steak night. At the time, the only thing I knew about XXXXXXX was that it had an exit sign that inevitably resulted in worn out jokes being made. I finally made the "XXXXXXX run" with a coworker (starting out near Orlondos in Des Moines) and got to visit the Tap. I was surprised to see all the other bikes parked outside. This little place is known for service Moscow Mules (and possibly was likely one of the first in Iowa to start doing this). If you are unfamiliar with this ginger beer drink, you will recognize them easily by looking for the metal (brass) mugs that they serve them in. I have now made a few more rides out there, including a recent one on "Tacopacolypse Tuesday" where a food tent is set up service fusion tacos. These nights are crazy, with hundreds passing through, and mobs at the bar and in line to get these tacos. There is also a "cook your own steak" night. The folks running the place and working at it all seemed friendly, as you might expect from a small town, and the locals seem to handle the weekly bicycle invasions pretty well. Its certainly a "to do" destination for folks exploring the bike trails around Des Moines... (And now, across the street is the new Iowa Distilling which makes corn moonshine.) And if you are amused by worn out jokes, you can buy their "I Love XXXXXXX" T-shirts... ;-)

This bar is what other bars hope to be when they grow up. Its a sexy little hole in the wall with a spacious patio in the country, every one smiles at each other and they have craft beers from all over the state you didnt even know you were in love with. What is your favorite bar,? The owner went to the Cumming Tap once, and is trying to recreate it.

I stopped for a much deserved adult beverage after a 30+ mile ride on the Great Western Trail. Beer was cold, with a decent mix of local choices with everyones national favorites. I loved the fact that they sold cook-your-own grilled steak dinners. Nothing special for atmosphere, but right up there with my favorite hole-in-the-wall small town bars!

Great stop on the Great Western Trail. You cant miss the bar right off the path at the Cummings trail head. Tuesday nights are taco Tuesdays where Tacopocalypse comes out to make tacos. Ive heard that Wednesday is steak night, too. Prices are reasonable, draft beer selection is limited, but their bottles and cans are well varied.

Nice little bar along the Great Western Trail, catering to a nice mix of cyclists and locals, depending on the day/time. A great place to stop for a beer before heading back up the trail.
