Unquestionably, the food is good, especially the cakes. The servers are friendly, but the service is terrible. We went there around 2:30pm, so was expecting the lunch crowd had gone and it really wasnt busy at all. The 2 or 3 servers buzz around doing stuff in the back, or at the register, but leave people waiting for service at tables and counters. There seems to be no idea that serving customers should be the priority and admin work can be done when time permits, even if that means after closing. We sat there for 15 minutes with every server walking past us and saying things like "Ill be right with you" on the way past, to go off into the kitchen, then wander off somewhere else. We werent even asked if we wanted a drink. One server made a sarcastic remark to another customer who went behind the counter himself to grab the coffee pot because he was tired of waiting, instead of realising he did it because of poor service. This place could be great if the staff were better trained or managed at all. Avoid like the plague at any time that might be remotely busy, or expect a 10 minute wait, just to pay for something at the register. The staff are friendly and I dont know if theres internal feuding between them, where they wait for each other to their job, but for each to do anything else to avoid serving customers is about as bad as it can get in the service industry. Weve been there many times over the years; at first because we love German food and the place was run well, but now, only because the cakes and pastries are authentic, but the service has taken longer and gotten worse and worse, where weve determined to only go there to shop and expect a long wait at the register.

While I didnt have any of the baked goods here, I did hang out for a bit with a celery soda (which is way better than it sounds!) and was astounded by the cafes level of service. The staff were friendly and attentive, making sure to check in with us about the quality of our food in a non-intimidating manner, and didnt hurry us out or look put out even though we stayed a little past closing time at 5 p.m. on a Sunday. On our way out the door, one of the staff brought us each of the five of my friends and me a loaf of freshly baked bread that the cafe was getting rid of for the day completely for free, and later she emerged again when we were taking photos outside the cafe, even offering to take a photo for us and suggesting we take it in a more scenic spot by the mural on the side wall. I was really amazed and delighted with their level of service alone and will definitely be back.

Fantastic Bakery and Service! This is the place where Ive bought my personal Birthday cake for the last 5 years. (Since moving to Indianapolis.) Being in December, this bakery is where my husband HAS to get his first assortment of Christmas cookies and their fruitcake danish. If you dont like fruitcake for the holidays, try their mixed fruit danish (like stollen but not in a loaf). It sells out quickly. Their pound cake is amazing. Breads and twists are always fresh. I needed a Carrot cake for my sisters birthday today (at the last minute), and she offered to have a fresh one made in an hour. The ladies are always kind when we sit inside with my two youngest to have coffee and pastries. Its a drive to get there from home, but completely worth it.

Heidelberg is a destination like no other, I have only been able to stop in a few times, but it is always a fun visit. The store is broken up into a few different sections: a shopping area, a bakery and a small cafe/restaurant. You can spend a long time looking at all of the old german items for sale. The bakery is always serving up the best pretzels and pastries. If you are nearby stop in a check out this fun little tiny shop. There isnt a lot of room, so dont bring a big group.

This is an amazing German bakery / grocery store / cafe! Its a place that you really have to visit if youre in the area. The bakery has too many types of authentic cookies and pastries to list. They also have crescent rolls as big as your head. You must try the "potato salad". They call it potato salad, but Id describe it more as "fully loaded mashed potatoes". Its served warm and will make you reconsider any other potato salad that youve ever had. BEWARE OF THE GNOMES!!!

I have been going here since I was a little girl. Food here is always good, the servers are always friendly, and the smell of fresh-baked bread alone is enough to bring me back over and over! Its a very friendly atmosphere, we go here about once a week for coffee and a light lunch and usually end up buying bread or danishes. The "beesting" cake and cherry-cheese danishes are particularly good. Plus the place is kitschy but so cute, its definitely worth a stop in Indianapolis.

My family and I love driving up here and having lunch. My personal favorite is the curry wurst, and the hot brat. Both crazy good. You cant beat their cakes and authentic pretzels. During Christmas they have amazing springerle cookies. Wish I could have them all year around. Absolutely delicious. They have a freezer section with some desserts and rolls that are half off the regular price. This place is incredible.

So many amazing German imports, foods and knick knacks. They have amazing pretzels and great looking cakes. My parents got their wedding cake from them decades ago and theyve been going strong at least since then. So many little surprises and so many shelves stocked full of interesting things. German food, baked items, music, gifts, cards, and more. Staff was friendly and helpful.

I was expecting eclectic German pastries and breads after looking through the website, but the place just did not meet my expectations. If you are looking to buy basic German groceries and bakery goods in Indy, this would be the place to go! The chocolate florentines were a disappointment, but the strawberry leaf cookies and the black forest cake were worth trying.

Great place to eat and get some traditional treats. Theres a reason for them being at this location for decades, they have a dedicated following of consumers who recognize the value, tradition, and pleasant service they provide. Thanks for putting a smile on my face for years and for turning my toddlers frown upside down every time we walk through the door!

My absolute favorite place to go eat! The baklava is to die for, the pastries are mouthwatering, and the weiners and potato salad, this is heaven on earth! My old German friend who introduced me to the Heidelburg, said the only thing missing from this lovely place was the outside tables and German beer. Authentic, 100%.

Stopped in for lunch. Service was slow but not rude (I think there was only 1 server during the lunch rush during my visit). The prices are good, the potato salad is great and the bakery is fantastic. It wasnt the best experience Ive ever had but I will go back; to quote a bad German joke their Wursts are the best!

The best cakes ever! So Delish! The most beautiful wedding cakes and the most affordable! Go in! They have cake samples. Such a wonderful experience. Great for lunches too! German Grocery Store, German Nick-Nacks dining rooms w/privacy for meetings and get togethers. Once of my favorite stores in the whole city!
