Currently (as of October 2009) this is the closest place to the downtown that that sells natural, local, or slow food. It has an unusual layout, and would appear to be a deli/café on entering, but they have bulk walnuts, cashews, pecans, pistashios, and dry beans behind the counter, _produce_, milk, eggs, poultry, and other dairy products against the south wall, and in the fridges, and a number of dry and pantry goods like flour and cornstarch, capers, olives, and mayonnaise, as well as local wines and beers downstairs. They have close everything that youd need to stock a full pantry, essentially, including things like honey, maple syrup and spreads, butter, spaghetti, mushrooms (sometimes), dried peppers, raw almonds, raw walnuts, black walnuts, blanched cashews, and fresh loaves of bread. I heard about the place through Slow Food Indy, and am very pleased that I went in. Theyre really incredible and the place is wowingly clean and well-layed-out and kept. The staff are all well-informed, and intimately familiar with all meats, cheeses, fruits and vegetables in the store. I regularly ask where certain items came from and most employees know atleast roughly where everything comes from just off-hand. They will often offer you cooking tips, or be knowledgeable about the quality of whats there. They also understand why anyone might care to know about that kind of thing.

The sandwiches were very creative, delicious, and interesting. They are not, however the sort of thing that will please every pallet. If my kids were picky eaters I wouldnt take them here. The casings of the scrumptious meats are the sort that one needs to pull out of their mouth. I couldnt tell from the website if there was room to sit and eat - there wasnt really. We walked from the Childrens Museum on a brisk late winter day, so we werent about to eat out side, but there is a sparse counter with bar type chairs (maybe 7 chairs) that we took advantage of. The sandwiches took at least 15 minutes to get to us, this didnt bother me - especially since they advertise as slow food, but if you want it quick you might be disappointed. To pass the time I ordered an espresso. It was very good and Im picky about such things. You could also get a soda, Kvass or go peruse the wine selection in the basement. The gelato looked delicious, Id like to return to sample them without the kids and during a slower time than lunchtime on Saturday. All this to say - if you are a somewhat adventurous eater who doesnt mind waiting a sec for a well-crafted sandwich - this is the place to go grab one.

I was in town for the NASCAR race and was looking for a butcher shop to get steaks for dinner. Was not willing to just buy what I could find at Meier. All I can say is WOW! Glad I found this place. I ordered three bone-in ribeye and some Capacola and headed back to my campsite at the track. I didnt look at the price just gave them my card and headed out. When I got back I looked at the receipt and was shocked at the price. Thought they just saw an out of towner and took advantage of me. Thought it was too late now might as well enjoy the meat and the evening. After cooking the steaks as I have always done, just sea salt and fresh ground pepper, I sat down to eat. Was I surprised when I ate the first bite. Full of flavor and tender. Worth every penny! Now please understand I have eaten steak all over the country at some of the best steak houses and this was quite honestly the best steak I have ever eaten. My mouth is watering just remembering the meal. I wish I had this place in Chicago. Oh, and the Capacola was home made and excellent. I will be back there every time I am in town.

WHY THIS PLACE LOST A CUSTOMER. I special ordered goose live pate back in mid November for the Christmas Holiday. They called me the week after Thanksgiving and said that they would not have the goose but they would have duck. I agreed to the change. When I got there today to pick up they informed me that someone (remember they called) was mistaken and had no pate or any of the other items that were ordered along with it. At first they didnt believe I had even placed an order (why would I be there), no appologies given, no concern for the fact that now I have to replan an entire menu for two holiday dinners. I really liked this place before today - now I see they are lacking in customer service and follow thru. My recomendations for this place will stop and I will never step foot in this place again.

Its a very nice place. Fresh meats, great selection of cheeses, quality produce, attentive sales guys, nice wine cellar. If you are thinking about whether to go or not - go. I just wanted to say why I deducted one star, maybe it will make a difference. The French bread used in sandwiches is supposed to have bite to it. Their French bread has so much bite it almost bites you back. IDK If its poorly baked or simply stale, but it takes a while to chew it. Secondly, what is wrong with the plates? They make a sandwich, wrap it in brown paper and hand it to you even if youre eating in. I like plates. Those are small things, hopefully they will fix them. The impression is overwhelmingly positive.

:::Quality::: They have truly excellent meats and cheeses. Wonderful Job with preparation and flavor! Sandwiches are first class. :::Appeal::: Nice ambiance, very comfortable location with good seating and smells. :::Service::: Atrocious. I asked the guy what a sandwich was like in terms of ingredients and he gave me a cocky/snarky answer along the lines of, Uh dude Im too good to answer you. There are lots of enterprising hardworking restaurateurs out there who DONT alienate customers, we should never be made to feel like an inconvenience. Ill never go back, someone else deserves my business.

A top quality butcher shop, cheese shop, sandwich shop, and craft beer/ wine selection. There are standard sandwich options such as the Goose plus special choices that seem to change at least weekly if not daily. The downstairs features a very nice cellar and snack bar with small plates including olives, cheeses, and charcuterie. Its a great place to find local goods such as local coffee, chips, and baked goods. They also have gelato which is getting difficult to find in Indy. The only downfall is the prices but they truly reflect the quality of the products.

Im from Seattle, so I was wonderfully surprised to find this little gem in Indianapolis. I ordered the "Goose" sandwich and it was delicious. They have a great selection of cheeses and cured meats as well. The peach-mint gelato was amazing as well. Unfortunately, I did not get a chance to try any of the wines they offered, but the selection of wines (domestic and foreign) as well as their micro-brews was impressive. Most importantly, they sell and promote local farmers and vendors- everything is fresh, organic, and delicious!

The food is AMAZING!!! The service, well.... I came in as a first time customer and asked very simple questions about ONE SANDWICH.... I was treated as an idiot. I have over 10 years in the service industry. I WILL NEVER GO BACK AND TELL MY FRIENDS TO AVOID THE EXPERIENCE AS WELL. It seems their "locals" keep them well enough off, as the staff "chatted" to others whom seemed to be up on the menu/inventory of great wines... All of which I can find on my own through manufacturers web sites....
