Terrible American/Asian food. Snippy owner. We were in the neighborhood visiting a store and friends recommended this place as really good food. Obviously my friends have no taste. The owner advised hes owned this place for 21 years. Obviously hes made no effort into it. The inside is old with pink booths and pink and chrome chairs that look like they came out of a 50s ice cream parlor. The bathroom obviously has not had a good washing. We ordered d the combo appetizer platter which was the standard Americanized fried items. Crab Rangoon, sweet BBQ pork, tempura shrimp, nasty eggrolls and tasteless potstickers. The owner kept talking to us like we’ve never been in an Asian restaurant. Funny as I typically go to Chinatown to eat Asian food and live 60 miles west. He went so far as so explain the significance of red to the Chinese like we were some kids. I asked the owner for shrimp with lots of vegetables and he kept saying Seafood Kow. I kept saying I want shrimp with lots of vegetables and he reiterated his comment while getting a bit hostile. I did not want a variety of seafood, I only wanted shrimp with vegetables and extra garlic. He made some snippy comment about what I was asking for and that he was replying accordingly. I told him he wasn’t listening. Chicken fried rice was also ordered. As I suspected I received seafood kow. The owner asked how everything was and I replied that he didn’t listen to what I ordered, was very argumentative and we would never be back nor recommend this place. I laughed as he was shocked and tried to apologize and didn’t even give a discount on the bill. We paid our bill and left.

I live in Midlothian and I come here every blue moon, unfortunately this experience this time was one that wasnt to welcoming as a patron, I walked in to pick up my order I placed over phone (which I was told was gonna be 10 min) ended up costing me a wasted hour and no food. They didnt have anything in order and people were waiting in lobby area for there food as well and when it was finally was my time after about 30 min they informed me that somebody took my order?? Very frustrated I reordered and proceeded to pay when the gentleman told me the card swiped stated "call center" and he couldnt accept my payment. Me baffled immediately called my bank and informed of the issue and they stated that the card swipe he did didnt even register in the VISA system but he is ok to swipe again. I informed him that he could try again and he infatically told me no and I could leave, not only was there no customer service but not even an apology. Business is lacking in Midlothian and its business owners like him that will never get me or any other persons business due to such a pig headed frame of mind.

My Mother and I decided to try out Gum Wah since she hadnt had food from there in years. I have to say it was most definitely the worst Chinese food I have ever had in my life. Pot Stickers - reminded me of a bad pierogi, dough was obviously over worked (a chewy, doughy, raw glutenated mess) Egg Rolls - small, without much filling and the wrapper was still raw on the inside. Shrimp Subgum - while the sauce and veggies were ok, the shrimp themselves were extremely overcooked. Orange Chicken - not orange chicken (chicken pieces were battered like sweet and sour chicken, sauce was almost all orange marmalade with raw onion and a bit of soy) Fried Rice - clumpy with little to veggies or meat. As a professional chef I can tell you it was the biggest waste of $40 considering most of it went in the garbage. There are plenty of good Chinese restaurants in the area. Dont waste your time or money

The owner of this restaurant is very rude. I ordered Kung pow chicken for the 1st time from this restaurant and I did not get a traditional Kung pow chicken. I called to speak to the owner about it to see if there was a mistake on my order. He told me no thats Kung pow chicken. I said well this isnt how its made at any other Chinese restaurant I go to, is it possible for me to bring it back and maybe switch it to beef with broccoli or something. He said no, once he makes an order I have to keep what he made because hes not paying for my mistakes. Im not sure how its my mistake because he doesnt know how to make Chinese food. He then told me to not order that again if I dont like it. The food is too expensive, not traditional, and the owner is very rude. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Customer Service is horrible, dont go here, I asked simply for a side of pan noodles and if they could cook it in soy sauce. The Owner of the resturaunt tells me it will go from $2 to $8, I simply asked why and he said because of the labor it cost to cook it in soy sauce. He then went even further and said you can put your own damn soy sauce on there! I simply asked him how it was a different dish by adding soy sauce, he told me they were closed and that they no longer sold Chinese food. He said Im going to start cooking Italian and polish food, you can not get Chinese food here. This is the owner we are talking about. This is the customer service you give? Wrong profession sir.

Worst Chinese/Asian food Ive ever had. The chicken lo mein I ordered was practically just Ramen noodles with boiled chicken that wasnt even fully cooked. Everything was covered in slime that I couldnt decipher as being from too much water or if they used way too much oil of some sort. I also ordered an egg roll (meant to be a plain egg roll) and they gave me one filled with shrimp. It was also burnt. I live directly across the street from this place and Id rather go down to a place on Cicero during rush hour than go back to Gum Wah. The only good thing about this place is that they give you a ton of food for your money. But believe me, its not worth the gagging.

What everyone has recently been saying about Gum Wah is completely incorrect. The owners are lovely, the food is great, and the price is right! So, the inside looks a little outdated. Its not dirty, its a charming place. Obviously, weve got a couple snobs from the city coming to the burbs and hatin on our chinese food and its owners. I cant believe some of the reviews here go as far as to bash the owners because "they explained the significance of red to the Chinese like we were some kids". Clearly, the owner was just trying to be nice. Dont let these negative people keep you from going to this awesome place!

I been going here since I was little. This place is my top 3 Oriental places to eat. I am a picky eater, and my family loves this place. The owner is nice, so I am not sure why people said he wasnt, maybe other people take things differently. I never had anything bad from there, a personal favorite is the pot stickers (which you can request them fried or steamed). I dont mind the place looks older, it makes it look more historic. I would rather go to a local business with great food, good prices; then a big chain restaurant with nasty food any day.
