On July 24, 2010 – Saturday night around 12:15 AM EST (mid-night) I went out to what used to be one of my favorite restaurants. I frequent a lot of high-end restaurants but this place I found appealing because of the waterfront view and late-night band. Around 1:00 AM EST, I went to the bar to ask for a second drink. The lady at the bar by the named of Laura was holding our tab so I called out her name and after mentioning her name several times, she acknowledged me and put her hands on her lips as if to say “shh” and told me to wait a second. I patiently waited as she went to the other end of the bar and prepared a drink for the other patrons whom she stayed there and chatted with for about 5 to 10 minutes. At that time, I sat at the bar stool but my guest and I had already acquired a table right across from the bar. Laura then walked back to the area where I was seated and proceeded to serve several other customers. Again, I sat there and waited patiently while looking at her every move. After she finished tending to the customers, she went to the cash register. By the way, I was sitting right in front of the cash register – staring at her. Laura did not even acknowledge me or inquired as to what I wanted. She actually ignored me and pretended as if I did not even exist. When I asked to speak with the Manager, the other bartender told me that he would contact the Manager so that my concerns would be addressed. Keep in mind that I sat right across from the bar and I directed the bartender as to where I would be located; and I did not move from that spot. It was about 20 to 30 minutes later and still there was no sign of a manager in sight. I then went over to speak with another bartender towards the back of the room thinking that no-one informed the manager initially of my grievances. When the manager was pointed out to me, I noticed that I recognized him because immediately after the incident I observed him go over and talk to Laura. But the Manager never even bothered to make an attempt to come over to my table (which was right across from the bar) to find out what transpired or even made a sincere attempt to remedy the situation. When I walked over to the Manager to discuss the matter with him, he was rude and very arrogant. The Manager Don told me that there was no way that he could verify what I stated and that this is not racially motivated (insinuating basically that I am a lair). I have no reason to lie about this situation. This was the first time that I have been racially targeted; and I was astonished. I have always been a patron of Aruba; and as I stated, I have always enjoyed the staff and environment. But, that night, I was called a lair; ignored by both staff (Laura) and the manager Don; and racially profiled. Please note that the manager Don walked away abruptly implying that I should be fine with the situation now– stating that “I got my drink, didn’t I?” After this discourse, I went to the bar located in the back of the room (where the manager was situated) to obtain his full name. But he did not want to provide me with that information. He stated that “it’s 1:00 AM EST in the morning and I am documenting this issue and this is a for-profit business”. So, basically, there was no use in conducting a formal complaint because it would not be addressed since the company only cares about its bottom-line and not the customers’ experience. The manager is a 6’ feet tall male and I am a 5’2” female; and he argued right over me as if he was trying to intimidate. I will never again frequent this restaurant. If this is a for-profit business which does not care about the customers who provides them with the money to keep on functioning, then there is a something fundamentally perturb about this company and it will certainly not have my business.

The first night we went was fantastic, We dined outside on the patio. We went back tonight and had a great experience until the end. We went for happy hour between 5-7. I personally had 3 drinks all on happy hour everyone else had 4 happy hour drinks (4in our party) which equals 15 drinks. Our bill came and we had 21 drinks on it. Mind you we tipped $35 up front. When I said said something about it we were told we ordered all of them. Absolutely not. I counted the drinks out for him and he insistently refused what I was saying. I could not believe it. I had the manager come out and he proceeded to say we had been there for 3 hours and we had to have had that many drinks. Im sorry but no. If we wanted to sit and have one drink we would. He said I was slurring my words and asked if we needed a cab. I was appalled. I had less than 3 drinks in 3 hours. Any person with an ABC license to sell alcohol knows you can have a drink an hour. I was not sluurring nor was I doing anything but relaxing with my family I hadnt seen since Christmas. I really cannot believe this happened. This has never happened to me anywhere I have been And I work in the restaurant business for over 13 years. I hope if you ever go to this place you pay for your drinks as you go. I hate to be taken advantage of and this is over and beyond that. Im so upset that this is how people are treated. So if you read This please go to mulligans. Rachel, Ashley and the girls are awesome over there. They give you great drinks, fantastic food, and more than wonderful service. Go see them. Aruba cafe is for the birds. Leave them behind and sit with people that respect you and treat you great no matter who you are And where you came from. Aruba cafe ripped us off. And I would love for them to comment so I can put them in their place. By the way this is right after we left.. I dont seem to be slurring my speech now do I!?

My husband ordered the lobster sandwich. First Impressions were....is this really a lobster sandwich??? it look like it was some sort of white mao and red something with brown bread with a whole bunch of tomato and lettuce. This is not a lobster sandwich I can verify I took a bite and I dont know what kind of meat that was. We asked the waiter what type of meat it was. he started to tell us that it was some sort of small lobster from somewhere else. Then he said he would go ask. He came back and claimed that it was Maine Lobster. There was no Lobster in that sandwich and if theres anybody else reading this and you work for a lab Id like to have that sandwich tested we paid $18 for a sandwich that had no Lobster in it I feel very ripped off! I took a photograph but theres nowhere to upload a picture if you are from New England and you were to see this picture you would throw up! I cant even believe that they still charge us even though we said we didnt like it and that it was disgusting. My husband was so hungry he just finished eating my food I will never go back there and eat again.
