Ive lived in the San Lorenzo Valley for over 20 years but never tried Cafe Carlos until recently. I read all the positive reviews and decided to try it. Holy cow, my palate standards must be high compared to most folks because the food was below average to me. My first impression of a good Mexican restaurant is the quality of the chips and salsa. Most of the reviews raved about them. Nope. Both the chips and salsa are processed not fresh. The salsa is from a jar and the chips are terrible. I ordered a beef chimichanga which came with refried beans and rice. The chimichanga was okay, beans were fine, but the rice had a strange flavor. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for good Mexican food.

I dont know what to think about Cafe Carlos. I went for a lunch, and upon entering, what caught me off-guard right away was the mega amount of tortilla chips that were ready in bowls under a heat lamp. I mean a LOT of chips. Like, is he expecting two bus loads of tourists in 10 minutes? I dont know, but the crowd never showed up. I think there were four tables being served while I was there. Service by the owner was prompt and friendly, sure. My enchilada plate was good, but really nothing to write home about. There are too many great Mexican restaurants in the area for me to put this one on my go-to list. I guess well never know what happened to that multitude of chips, though.

Best of the Best. I was here a month ago and ordered a Tostada Ensalada and fries. both were excellent. I am a healthy eater and couldnt finish the Salad and it was the best I have ever had so I had incentive to eat it. I spole with the owner who was very kind but was concerned about the hard times his restraurant was suffering. He said that clientele was down. I dont kmow why unless it is area wide. There is no ezcuse to miss this little gem. Prices are good too. I came by tonight to eat and it was closed. I jope it is only for the day and not permemantly. It would be a shame to.lose this place.

Salsa is so fresh that it comes to your table warm. Theres another salsa that is also complimentary-pico de gallo- and that is also fresh. You can taste the onions. What place gives you two salsa bowls right when you walk in the door? Plus, the tortilla chips come warm and crisp. Food is consistently good and the service is prompt and friendly. We dont go to the local taquerias in town anymore. Prices here are the same as the taquerias, plus you get the fresh salsa and homemade taste. You feel like family here.

People werent kidding about the chips and salsa. The chips were really good. I dont know if they come straight out of the bag and just preheated or something but theyre damn fine. Beyond the chips and salsa, it was a great restaurant. I liked the chicken tacos that I ordered.

We ate lunch at cafe carlos on mothers day because we didnt want to get stuck in the brunch chaos elsewhere. It was delicious. the chips and salsas are to die for. the service is so warm and personal, it was really a very unexpected pleasure. wonderful!
