Its hard to quantify what it is that makes a good pizza, but we know what we like, and that includes Engfers. Theres a good diversity of local pizza options in Santa Cruz; Pizza My Heart is a great choice if youre near downtown Santa Cruz or the Capitola Wharf, but both locations are a hassle to get to if youre not within reasonable walking distance. Ive never been much of a fan of Upper Crust or Pleasure Point Pizza, but theyre reasonable options. When it comes down to choosing where we want to go, we prefer Engfers. Each of the establishments mentioned above will hit your wallet more or less equally as hard for a full size pizza, about $20 depending on toppings. Engfers has a good in-house beer and wine selection, and if youre into ping-pong, theres a table next to the seating area. Theyre also frequently busy, so seating (and wait times) can be on the longer side if youre showing up during peak hours.

The best vegan pizza ever! Most places just leave off the cheese when you ask for a vegan pizza. These guys use tofu to make a rich sauce that even tempted the meat eaters in my family. We bought 3 or 4 pizzas for our gathering, and only ordered one vegan pizza for us two vegans. Seriously, we had to guard that pizza with our lives. Everyone loved it as much, if not more, than the pizzas with cheese. My only complaint is that they are not open for lunch. OH, and it would be nice to have a shop in Aptos to avoid the traffic.

Very laid back Santa Cruz style with great beer and pizza. On tap are unique local brews that are perfect for pizza. We enjoyed a Pilsner and a Hefeweizen with our everything pizza (the works). Only criticism is that for the money the pizza doesnt go far -- perhaps a 16" instead of a 14" for same price ($24.50) would have been better value. But we plan to go back because Engfer is a singular pizza house, suitable for all.ages and stages of life, community and family friendly, that invites you to hang out.

The BEST pizza in town and kid friendly. The Aces Wild is a personal favorite (pesto, cashews, red onions) and all of their pizzas are cooked in a wood oven. Engfer has found the perfect balance between fun environment, and relaxed atmosphere. Theres a separate ping pong room that is a great way to kill time for you or your kids.

Best pizza in Santa Cruz. Thin wood-fired crust - crispy on the outside/chewy on the inside, good quality toppings, without a ton of sauce (which I like). Pizzas are small for the price, but its well worth it. YUM!

Pretty good pizza, the dough is excellent, thin and crispy with a chewy crust. The ingredients are above average. The service is informal. $16 for a small pizza makes it pretty pricey though.
