R&G is a Chinatown staple, and its probably one of the two legitimately good sit down restaurants there (the other being Z&Y). I dont come here very often, but I recently had lunch here, and I still thought it was as good as I remember. Beef Brisket in Clear Broth - The beef was tender, and the daikon chunks were able to absorb all the flavors in the broth. I thought the broth was robust, but a little on the sweet side. Its still one of the best around town, but it made me miss the amazing versions in HK. Steamed Egg with Clams - The eggs were really smooth and silky, and the clams were big and hearty. The clam juice gave the eggs a strong umami presence, which made it really delicious. Some shiitake mushrooms would make this even better. Beef Chow Fun - The noodles had noticeable wok hei, and the beef was tender. There couldve been more onions, and I was hoping that there would be yellow chives, but they didnt use any. Some of the noodles didnt have much sauce on them either. It wasnt bad, but it didnt stand out from cheaper versions at other restaurants. From my previous visits, I dont recommend the Salted Egg Yolk Fried Crab. Stick with the signature Salt and Pepper Fried. Also, the Pan Fried Pork Patties with Salted Fish are top notch. They use high quality salted fish, so pretty much anything with it is good. Any clay pot with salted fish or the Chicken and Salted Fish Fried Rice would probably be solid choices.

This place was great but I do wish I new a little more about it before we ordered. Maybe its because its my first time in SF and not use to how things are ran. Me and 7of my coworkers are siting, waiting to be seated. When we hear someone yelling at us. "Hey, Hey you seven up stair. Tables ready". So, feeling like I just got in trouble we quickly went up the stairs. Into this packed dinning area and there were a ton of waiters moving a mile a minute. It reminded me of that scene in the Bee Movie when there standing in the middle of all the traffic. We were quickly shown to our table. Now for some reason we or I was think that we would order an get our own portion of food. This is a place were you chose a dish and share it with everyone. So keep that in mind if you go with a group of people and you will only need one portion of rice. We had 7 people and it was plenty for everyone. These guys/waiters are moving so fast it crazy. They will not wait to see or ask you if you have any question. You put your order in an on to the next person. From the teapot of hot tea and everything we ordered it was delicious. We had calamari, scallops, eggrolls and something else for the appetizers. Everything was spot on the eggrolls were light and crisp. The calamari was also very light and didnt need any kind of sauce. All main dishes were great. The menu said that some things were spicy but they werent. Its a most go place.

Classy Chinese food. Ive walked past this restaurant a thousand times and never thought it was so nice inside! The place from the outside looks typical and I didnt expect much. My boyfriend and I came here for lunch and it was a quick wait. The hostess asked if we mind if we share a big table with other people. We told her we didnt mind and to our suprise, once we walked downstairs, another hostess waited for us to show us to our own table! Shortly after we sat down, the waiter comes and asks us if we were ready. I was pushed on time so we ordered: R&G Special Beef with Rice Hot and Sour soup ($2 extra) Vermicelli curry noodles The special beef entree was alright but its a popular dish. The rice is not just plain steamed rice, it was cooked with bits of eggs which added flavor. It was a good combination. I wasnt blown away by this entree but it was good and worth the try. Hot and sour soup was spicy, and it gave me hiccups. Im better off with tom yum. Vermicelli curry noodles portion was HUGE! Defintely a family style dinner portion! It was alright, lots of egg and shrimp. It tasted better with chili sauce. I intially wanted to try their famous salt and pepper crab ($38) but I didnt feel like getting my hands dirty since it was just a lunch break. I dont think I would come back on choice but it is defintely one of the nice, presentable chinese restaurants.

In my opinion this place is way overrated and pricey, yet there were lines down the street to get in on a Tuesday evening - I dont get it. We ordered 3 appetizers: egg rolls (ok but nothing special), salmon and avocado rolls (quite good), and Chinese chicken salad (very bland - all lettuce and crispies, almost no chicken - hardly any dressing). Main dishes included Peking duck (mostly skin and bones - although most of the skin was done to crispy perfection - and the dumpling-pancake thingies to wrap the duck in were undercooked with a raw flour taste edge), Chicken with cashews (the driest chinese food I have ever had - no sauce), Moo shu pork (OK - but just like the stuff at my local Chinese place for less than half the price), and Honey walnut prawns (nice big velveted prawns, and walnuts, but almost no sauce). Service was fine. Ambiance was loud and intrusive - hard to hear my dinner companions above the noisy din, although we might have just been unlucky to be sat next to someone at the next table with a booming voice spouting off about his shooting skills. Overall a major disappointment in my opinion.

I am here simply because Anthony Bourdain was when he visited SF. It was a fan act. I took my father-in-law here to see if this is truly authentic Cantonese. We ordered their R&G special Beef and sauteed lamb plus the Yangzhou Fried Rice. After patiently waiting, our dishes finally arrived slowly on our table. The R&G Special Beef is quite special in that it is so tender and not chewy it almost does not taste like beef! The flavor is also good and I think it is deep fried although there is not crispiness to it. The sauteed lamb is spicey with cumin and pepper to eliminate the gamy smell and it is very tasty. The fried rice, well is fried rice but they give you whole pieces of shrimp and Chinese BBQ pork so it is pretty generous of them. The other two dishes were small for the price of $20 each. I did not get to try their salt and pepper Crab though. That would be my dish for the next trip. Overall, this is a tasty and clean Chinese restaurant with a high price tag. So be ready to pay about $30 a person for a meal.

The hostess was rude. She sat parties who walked in after us without a reservation. The bartender was the places saving grace. He was good as well as efficient. But over an hour after we arrived, and after each possible person had been seated, the hostess asked if wed sit with another party at a table. We agreed, since we hadnt eaten all day. We sat at a table in which two diners got up to eat elsewhere (evidently leaving because wed sat there). We placed our order as soon as we could flag down the waiter but evidently requesting our appetizer "as soon as possible before dinner" wasnt a clear request. We were later told (again, after flagging down the server) we had ordered an appetizer that takes longer to make. The chicken and beef skewers?? Difficult to make? Wow. Thats unfortunate. Worst service I have ever had, rudest wait staff, mediocre food at best, expensive drinks and refuse to go back. Will gladly steer away any friend or family member from this restaurant.
