To eat at The Waterboy one needs to make a weekend reservation several weeks in advance. Why is beyond me. For my second dinner there I arrived in slacks and a sportcoat with a 5:30 reservation and found us offered a small table squeezed in with 6 others despite several window tables available. I declined and requested a seating elsewhere. The menu is limited although that is not unexpected or bad for a small restaurant with only 16 tables. What is annoying is being rushed through a meal so they can turn the table two or three times that night. I had not even swallowed my last bit of appetizer when the waitstaffer was pulling my plate away. It happened again with the entree. I was about to comment to my wife how delicious the ravioli special for the night had been when in came a giant arm to disrupt my train of thought. It was if they have a designated watcher to swoop in as soon as the plate is clean. The good news is that the food has seasoning and is tasty. The not-so-good news is that the portions are really small. My wifes sea bass special could not have been more than 6 ounces. My special had 5 regular-size ravioli. The potatoes and veggies with the main courses were also delicious but sparse. If you are very hungry or a big person this is not the place to eat. My last objection is to the charge of $1 for "bread service". Really !? If all 16 tables order bread and they turn the table 3 times in the night, they make a whole $50 more profit. This is the first and only restaurant I know of that charges for bread. Maybe next it will be for the water . Ambience is casual in one large open room looking out on Capitol Avenue in downtown Sacramento. The two-person bar is a bit silly. And I did get my check handed to me and processed in record time... of course. I guess I just need to learn how to eat slower, but then the food gets cold. I like to relax when I eat out, and even then it only takes 60-70 minutes. Waterboy had us in and out in 55 minutes. We went to the Hyatt for dessert and liqueurs. Very relaxing, very romantic, very Saturday night. Waterboy not so much.

I ordered the halibut and after eating nearly all of the meal I noticed a worm like thing appear on my plate as I was cutting up the remaining meat. After further inspection I confirmed that it was indeed a 1 inch long segmented worm! After showing this to the waiter he grabbed my plate and literally ran back to the kitchen after mumbling something! The manager came out and told me that they were comping me my meal. When my lunch party started asking him questions about what it was he reluctantly informed us that is was a parasitic worm that was in the fish! The other 2 people who had ordered the halibut did not look too happy about this as you might imagine. Basically this ruined the going-away-party we were throwing for a co-worker and none of us will be going back there again.

My wife and I took my son & his wife for his birthday. We each ordered something different so we each could have taste samples. All 4 dishes were outstanding and portions were very reasonable based on price. The menu allowed you to order by courses or A La Cart. Decor was very nice yet comfortable even for semi-casual attire. Service was excellent. I highly recommend advance reservations and there is a stand-up bar should you have to wait. We certainly will return to dine there again hopefully in the near future. Parking is a little better than most places for downtown Sacramento.

Has our first experience at this restaurant with friends who had heard this is spot frequented by local chefs and foodies. I can now see why. Service was very attentive. Menu had a good variety of options. Presentation was stellar. And the food was delicious. No one in our party was disappointed in the slightest. The ambiance inside is very pleasant and we had no issue carrying on conversation. Outside on the patio is a bit more casual. Reservations are definitely recommended for inside on busier nights of the week.

we dined the Saturday before mothers day. there is an excellent menu and the food was superb. my sister is a vegetarian and did not mention that when she made the reservations. she also does not eat dairy, onions, or garlic. they were able to adopt something for her for the first and second courses without any problem or fuss. the staff are friendly, attentive , and efficient. I highly recommend this establishment and think you will enjoy the experience.

I took a friend to Waterboy for an indulgent birthday dinner and visit recently after checking menu items on the website. The actual items on offer were somewhat different and some the same but more expensive. Portions were small but delicious, and splitting a salad and a dessert with an entree each left me satisfied with both quantity and quality. We each had gnocchi with mushrooms, split a beet salad and a cherry tart which came with super tasty ice cream.

My husband and I went to Waterboy for dinner on June 26,2008. We decided to go there for our wedding anniversary. The people there were fantastic and nice. Such great service. And the food, was even better. We will definitely go there again for dinner and were anxious to try their lunch. When we went for our anniversary, they served us champaign and when we had dessert, they gave us dessert wine. Really great place and will go there again.

We had a party of six and dined at Waterboy last night. I complained to our server that my filet was tough and she assured me that my complaint would be reported to the management. I never heard back from her or anyone else. I spent well over $300.00 for the dinner and left very disappointed. I also felt the server vague and uninformed when we asked questions about the menu. I have eaten here many times and never had a similar experience. I

This was our 3rd experience in the last 12 months and it was as wonderful as before. Excellent service, diverse menu and beautiful food. I ordered a special drink and the server and bartender accommodated me without question. The greeter always smiles cheerfully to you when you enter and is very gracious even if you dont have reservations (Monday is a lovely time to dine out!). You can order appetizers and dessert or entire meal.

I planned a surprise dinner for my husband at The Waterboy - one of our absolute favorite restaurants in Sacramento. Greg, GM, was so kind and accommodating and made it so easy for me to organize the evening. We arrived at the restaurant and the waiters were so attentive and focused on giving us a wonderful evening with friends and family. We had a great time and enjoyed the fantastic food in the best surroundings. Thank you!

I give this place 5 stars! It was one of the best places I have been to. I am here on business from Connecticut and experience many different places. Great food. Adam, the Chef, hats off to you!!! John, the bartender, hostess and waiters all wonderful and very friendly. I really enjoyed myself and you can bet I will be there again if I am back in this area, without a doubt. When I find somewhere great I keep coming back.
