Sticky menus, sticky tables; reasonably clean otherwise. Ordered the carne asada super burrito and the carnitas platter. The asada and carnitas themselves were decent. The pico was passable. Everything else was fairly terrible by Mountain View standards, from the astringent yet bland Pace Picante style salsa, to the stale, cold chips fried in bad oil, to the soured sour cream, to the pasty refried beans that made Safeway Rosarita beans seem like canned manna, to what has to be the worst excuse for powdered guacamole mix Ive had in recent memory. There are dozens of better options for Mexican food in this area: El Grullense, La Bamba, La Costena ... erm... even Taco Bell may have this place beat. Avoid.

Seems to me that the place has "Americanized" their food. There is virtually no flavor at all. Taquitos looked awesome served over a bed of lettuce wit sour cream and guacamole. The taquitos had no flavor at all it was the sour cream and guacamole that gave them flavor. Then the main dish I had was chicken enchiladas with beans and rice, beans and rice tasted like they should and the entire meal looked very appealing but again zero flavor. The red sauced used on them was almost tasteless. At the time I was basically the only person in there. So that might be a clue. They need to.conside going back to their roots.

I come here every couple of weeks to enjoy the Mariachi music and good food/drink on Friday nights. The best dish I have had so far is the Steamed Fish and my favorite drink is the Jamaica Margarita (hibiscus flower iced tea) made with Herradura Blanco tequila. The make good guacamole and their fish ceviche is excellent. They also have great pozole and menudo on the weekends. Plates I have enjoyed: Carne assada plate Pozole Arroz con pollo Pechugas canarias Arroz con camaron Ceviche and aguachile

If you want stale chips, jarred salsa, fake Guacamole mix, sour cream poured on a hot plate, and the smallest portion of "steak" ever served in the history of fajitas, this is your place. Right on the busiest street in the heart of the most expensive area in America. Only $22 with a tap beer during happy hour. One of the worst meals Ive ever had, and Im a health food writer who has lived in NYC, Houston, Dallas, Orlando, SF, Boston and many other cities. Disgraceful.

Worst place ever to eat "authentic" Mexican food, first of all the Menu that google maps shows is completely different from the one at the restaurant, all food is over price and the food doesnt taste good, we went there for our Anniversary and the host was rude, he stared at me since I got there it was so uncomfortable to eat there even my wife told me that she didnt like that the "guy" was watching me eating he whole time. I wont go to eat there never again.

Stay away from this place! first and last time to eat here. Food was terrible and service was even worse. Dirty dishes, broken plates, the worse part if you complain to the owner ( Big Muscle ) guy, he simply doesnt care, so please dont bother. Health department should visit here and close it down before someone really gets sick. I was worried about my 3 year old not to get sick!

Double check your bill -- two kids milks appeared as $2.00 (listed as $1.50 in menu), and happy hour margaritas as $6.00 (menu says $5.00 -- and the waitress said that price was OK for frozen, which we ordered). When I pointed it out, she reversed the milk but not the margs. Food was OK, kids menu is a good value.

Great food and fun atmosphere. The carnitas is just perfect -- seems to be fried a little to make it crispy. I usually get the carnitas burrito, super (adds guacamole, sour cream, etc) wet (covers it in tasty green chile sauce and melted cheese). The free chips and salsa are decent too.

Excellent food, good sized portions, colorful (but booming) atmosphere, very reasonable prices. Service is friendly and helpful but was overwhelmed during one visit when the restaurant is busy -- it was hard to get refills on drinks. Great for families.

Solid but expected Mexican food. Avoid the menudo, its terrible. Everything else is pretty ordinary albeit on the salty side. The arroz con pollo tastes odd, like it came from a can. Update 7/21/2012: for the record, all the soups are awful.

My all time favorite spot for carnitas! Crispy, salty, and savory all in one bite! Los Charros and its big brother the taqueria have been a MV institution for years. Always a great default for excellent Mexican fare.

Went there for breakfast while visiting the area. I had the Menudo and it was really good. I ordered chilaquiles and they were not the best Ive had. I will go back when in the area and try some of their other dishes.

Been coming here for breakfast burritos about 2 years now, I can say price is very reasonable and they will fill you up, coffee is good and staff is on top of topping off your cup. Overall great Mexican food place.

Got a to-go order. Pollo con Crema w/ corn tortillas and they didnt give me my tortillas, which makes it impossible to enjoy this meal and A burrito with red sauce and got it with green sauce. $25.00 wasted.

I find the food great with just the right amount of spice. The bar has a wide selection of tequilas and the staff is very friendly. Service could be faster but maybe i should learn to slow down:)

La Espuela offers a broad range of popular Mexican dishes. It is inexpensive and has ample space. Ingredients are only of moderate quality and cooking feels uninspired.

Slow service on an almost empty house some orders were messed up, and the food was mediocre at best I would honestly only recommend the cheeseburger with fries

Muy bien! Been here two nights in a row... great food and micheladas... and Friday night you get to listen to mariachis. How can I not give 5 stars?

It is a restaurant which fits about 100 people. The prices seems to be very low, that is good, but the atmosphere odd the place reflects that, too.

Love their downtown location, but this one leaves me flat. Didnt enjoy it the first time, and went back to give it one-more-go. Nope, not a fan.

Im sorry but no way bro. Im from San Jose and this was canned food on a plate. Good service but poor quality food coming from the kitchen.

Fresh, tasty food. Place may not be super-chic, but it is solid on the fundamentals: Quality, service, food. Great place to just unwind.
