I was mislead with the "deli" in the name. This is a large restaurant. It has a good sized menu from fried chicken dinner to prime rib dinner. Of course, most well known for their deli style sandwiches. I had the classic Reuben sandwich with corned beef. There is a choice for pastrami but I opted to stick with the classic. The corned beef itself is very very good. Lean, tasty and well cooked. In fact, all the individual components of the sandwich, the rye bread, the Russian dressing, the sauerkraut, are top notch.... you can just tell where I am going with all these set ups. The fully assembled sandwich, however, to me tops out at around 85%. To me a Reuben needs to be flat grilled with butter, lots of butter. I want to be able to pick it up and left me with greasy fingers, much like a grilled cheese sandwich. What I got, however, is a very healthy dry feeling on the outside surface of the Reuben. To me this is just not good enough to share the same plate with the goodness of the corned beef. I also like more sauerkraut in the Reuben to the point that I can taste it equally with the corned beef. The sandwich overall tasted like corned beef on rye, not a Reuben. Attached to the restaurant is the deli/bakery part of the restaurant. This, i think, is the gem of the visit. They make everything from jars of jam, bagels, bread, cookies, to cake by the slice and of course whole cakes. We had a slice of the Italian rum cake and a slice of vanilla Napoleon . They are just delicious. Cake was light, the cream in the Napoleon was fresh and puff pastry in between was still crunchy. Mind you that was 9pm and the puff pastry was not soft and soggy. That could only mean there were not sitting on the display shelf for that long before it went into my mouth. On to the bagel. It was close to the the NY bagel but not quite. The crust was there, which is already far better than most of the bagels i had, but just not snappy enough to the real NY bagel. The bread meat inside was also not as chewy as a real NY bagel. From the location outside of NY this is pretty good already. I would say it is far better than any of the other bagels I can get in any of the bakeries around. Overall, I had a very positive experience, may be I am just too picky. I will recommend this place to anyone looking for a good Jewish deli style food.

I went to the deli because I wanted corned beef for sandwiches, and not many delis carry it. On entering the bakery/deli, a number dispenser machine was right in the entry. So I took a number and tried to get a handle on the place. I walked the length of the counter, which was desserts and breads and then, farthest from the entry, the deli. A man offered to help me, so apparently the numbers were not for the deli. He sliced the pound of corned beef I ordered (almost $20 a pound!). He never asked how I wanted it sliced. He just did it. I then wanted to look at bread, so he kept the meat and told me to get someone to fetch it after I finished at the bakery. I went down to look at the bread, and also noticed beautiful but incredibly expensive desserts. I was completely ignored by all who worked there. I finally stood in front of the two registers at the counter, having given up my quest to ask about their rye bread and just wanting to pay for the meat. A woman at one register finished ringing up the lady in front of me and walked away. The man at the other, who was fiddling with the machine and not ringing anyone out, also ignored me. So I asked how I could get help to pay, so finally he sent someone to the deli for my meat, and I paid. Had I not been so set on making Reubens for lunch, I would have left without my corned beef. When I am in a place that charges top dollar for what I presume is top-quality merchandise, I expect to be treated well. I expect to be greeted. I expect not to have to use detective work to see how to shop there. And, for the deli, I expect to be asked how I want the meat sliced (they even do that in the super market!). I did not experience any of those perks at Katella Deli. A week later, I found Cortinas Italian Market at Orange and Brookhurst. They also carry excellent Boars Head corned beef, are not as expensive, DID greet me and treat me nicely while I shopped, and, of course, asked how I wanted the meat sliced.

This review is only for the bakery. We placed a special order for a cake after a friend of our recommended them as a bakery that will make cakes with light and only lightly sweetened frosting. I explained this to the girl on the phone, and requested a cake with a single rose on it. She recommended a live rose instead, and I agreed to her suggestion. I confirmed with her that the frosting was light, not very sweet and we had decided on the live rose. Sadly, upon picking up the cake (over an hour drive for me), it was decorated with a frosting rose instead. I told them Id take it anyway and we could live with it. What was even more frustrating is that once we cut into the cake at home, we discovered that the frosting was thick, heavy and VERY sweet. My son and I both refused to eat it. This was certainly not a complicated order. I called the manager and explained this and they were kind enough to offer a $15 credit for the decoration mistake, but the cake is unusable for us. Almost $50 for a pretty small cake. Ill now have to pay for a second cake from a different bakery to eat as a belated birthday celebration. All around a very disappointing customer service experience. I CERTAINLY wont return and I dont recommend placing any special orders.

Located in Los Alamitos, Katella Deli is one of the best Delicatessen restaurants in Orange County. My recommendation is order any sandwich on the menu. Its hard to go wrong. The sandwiches, combo sandwiches (I love their cole slaw) and especially the melts are superb. Anything with pastrami or corned beef are my favs. If youre a breakfast lover like me, youll enjoy the variety of egg, waffle and omelette dishes. The egg and omelette plates come with a fresh baked side of bagel, roll, or toast. You can get a fresh muffin for a little more cash. I really love their omelettes, but if you like it with melted cheese like I do, be sure you ask for it or you may be disappointed. Most of the omelettes do not come with cheese! As you walk in and out of the restaurant its hard not to notice or smell the delicious aroma of the bakery. There is a plethora of treats to choose from; e.g. cookies, cakes, struddels, coffee cakes, muffins. There are even containers of sugary cinnamon bagels chips along the wall. If you have a sweet tooth, pick up some dessert, you wont be disappointed.

Awesome service: I worked with bakery manager Rachel over the phone and described exactly what I wanted for my sons 2nd birthday party. Hes into race cars already so I described to her exactly how I wanted it. Even to the detail of the red and white chicanes, to the flags on a big #2 as the actual track. The cake was big enough for the layout because we had 40+ guests in attendance. The cake came out more visually delightful than imagined, and it tasted so good. I am not a cake person, I would rather have a delicious slice of pie - but this cake was so delicious and the very best Ive ever had ! (I chose their buttercream frosting as it held the designs best and the cake was a red velvet with vanilla custard filling. It was so fresh tasting and so delightful. I posted the pic of the #2 race track cake here, take a look at what a great job they did! Thanks again Rachel !
