Hi, We recently purchased an Italian Rum cake from The Flour Shop. I am from Boston and wanted a cake that resembled or tasted similar to the cakes that I am accustomed to from New York or Boston. Unfortunately, as much as we tried to describe the cake to the staff, the end product tasted nothing like the Italian Rum cakes we desired. First, the cake is supposed to be soaked in rum. There was barely any run taste whatsoever in the cake - it almost tasted like a slight rum extract was used. In fact, the people that tried it couldn’t taste any rum. Also, maybe this was our fault for not describing better – but the butter cream wasn’t what we expected. The Boston and New York Italian rum cakes usually have a confectionary based butter cream icing. This cake’s icing had a very heavy (seems like it was made with real cream) texture and was not that good in our opinion. The staff was nice and we tried a multi-grain bread – which was very good. However, based on this experience, we would not purchase a rum cake from them again. Also, just to note, the cake was not inexpensive costing $30 for a 6" cake - although from a quantity standpoint, it was a very high cake (height-wise) and therefore not a bad value if one was just looking at quantity alone. I just want to add that other products that they sell looked very good and probably are good. Besides the bread, which was real good, we will try something else someday.

In Aug. I need a cake for my daughter’s baptism so I Google bakeries near me and found this bakery. When picking the cake I noticed there was cake showing at the top of cake (cross shaped) as well as other noticeable mistakes. I politely asked the decorator if he could fix it for me and gave me a really hard time about it. He said "Its the back of the cake so I didn’t think it mattered"..."If I try to fix it I may make it worse". I mean really??!! Not to mention the fondant bow on my cake looked like play dough? He was able to somewhat cover up the cake. Although he gave me a hard time the cake tasted good and my guest were pleased. So I decided to call back and give it a second chance for my daughter’s first birthday. I spoke with what seemed to be a concerned lady and was will to make up for my inconvenience and said she would give me a discount on this cake. I asked if there were any other decorators and she said no. So while discussing prices and design ideas for this cake I was later told that the discount they were going to give me would not be $50 off the cake but $10 dollars off?? I tried making my daughter’s cake as simple as possible for the decorator not to screw this one up and she said to me "If you are so worried about him screwing up the cake why do you want to get it done here then?" WHT? Thats PROFESSIONALISM?? So I replied "Never mind" and hung up. Never again!

Our cake was simply the best cake I have ever tasted. They did a great job! They gave us a nice cake tasting and made special recipes that fit our style. Our cake was not fondant and therefore was all buttercream icing on the outside. We had lace designs on it that were very nice. Now, I know without fondant, it is harder to make nice elegant and precise work. Our cake was beautiful. The lace patterns were not the best I have ever seen on a non-fondant cake, however they were very pretty. The taste and moisture of the cake was 5 out of 5 stars. The pretty-ness was 4 out 5. The only other issue was that the person in charge of our cake was difficult to get a hold of sometimes, but it all worked out in the end. I would definitely recommend The Flour Shop, and if I had to do it all over again, I would certainly choose them again.

I ordered the 8" Raspberry White Chocolate Charlotte cake for a party this past Saturday. In a word: UNBELIEVABLE. It was one of the most delicious cakes Ive ever eaten, and Im not a big dessert eater. It was a pretty tall round cake, beautifully decorated. The cake itself was extremely moist and very flavorful. High quality ingredients in this cake. No strange flavors from the colored icing or after taste at all from any bite of this heavenly confection. No skimping on the filling, nice thick layer of rich white chocolate custard. The whole raspberries in the filling were big, plump, and tart. The icing was smooth, fluffy, and delicious. Neither the icing nor the cake were sickening sweet, just very rich. This 8" cake served 25 people easily with a piece left over. Perfect cake for any occasion.

I found this place by doing a google search for local bakeries in my area. Picked up an almond cake with Bavarian cream filling and fresh berries yesterday and am not only disapointed but very upset that none of the children ate it. I have a $35 cake that is all left. My husband didnt even like it :(. The cake was very heavy, the butter cream filling tasted like lard pure heavy lard. I wanted to call them and say something but am too embarrassed for them. I have to say though whoever decorated the cake , knows about decorating cakes for sure. The cakes sold at my bakery are tasty but have terrible decorations, its almost like a 3rd grader decorated it! Either way, I cant win... I can have a pretty cake that tastes bad or a tasty cake that looks terrible..lol

HITS: GREAT RYE BREAD - If you are looking for old world Rye bread, Flour Shop bakes it. By "old world" I mean that rye bread with the great crusty outside and the really chewy inside - the type you would get at a great deli in NY. GREAT SAVORY CROISSANTS: Ive also had the ham/cheese and the spinach croissants, which are also wonderful. MISS: I tried the "walnut" brownies, which seemed more like a chewy fudge, very thin, with an almost equal layer of frosting, then walnuts put on the top. While somewhat tasty, it definitely wasnt anything I was expecting from a brownie.

I have been to the Flour Shop on two seperate occasions and did not care for any of the sweets I bought either time. The last time I also bought some cupcakes. One of them was a red velvet, and it tasted as though it came out of a Betty Croker box. Sorry. I did not find anything special about its texture or flavor. And the frosting was not cream cheese, it was some time of sweet frosting- it was poop. Actually all the cupcakes had the same frosting. I did not even like the chocolate cupcake.

The cake is exceptional: moist, not overly sweet, and rich without being heavy. I highly recommend this bakery for any specialty cake, and they have amazing bread and pastries as well.

Our cake was delicious! They forgot our lemon flavor in the layers but it was still amazing and our guests loved it!
