I have attended Udipi a few times before, and have been pleased with the food and service. I am a vegetarian and appreciated a vegetarian, southern Indian restaurant. I vowed to show this place to all of my friends, and tonight, I tried to. However, upon arrival, it became clear that my table was being discriminated against on homophobic grounds. I was in attendance with a gay couple and their young son. Yes, we were all gay or allies but none of us were engaged in PDA or the like. We simply wanted to eat. All the other tables who came in 15 minutes after us or later received their food before someone even came to ask us for our order. Our original waiter abandoned our table, and we noticed himself and three staff members staring at us and talking. Finally, a different waiter made eye contact with our table, gestured "1 minute" and continued talking to the other staff. Finally, a different person came and took our food orders, (which were sizable). If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck. This was homophobia. We tried to gain the attention of wait staff walking directly past our table, we were ignored even if eye contact was made. We had to remind the staff, an hour after food was brought out, that items were forgotten, as well as certain wrong items brought out. Further, every glass that was served to us was filthy, with larger smears of food on them, and the water smelled bad. My food was brought out (aloo gobi) with raw, uncooked cauliflower and potatoes. After food was brought out, no one came and checked on our table again. We had to go to the counter to tell them that they had neglected to bring us out our entire order (an hour after finally being served our food). Yes, it tasted good, but I couldnt even cut my vegetables they were so hard. (And tables are not given knives, only forks and spoons, which make poor cutting devices for anything even slightly hard or tough). I regret to inform this forum that this may be the last time I attend this restaurant. I say this with sadness in my heart, as I have had a few positive experiences before. Between the low quality of the food, the lack of cleanliness of the establishment, and the obvious homophobia, I am not sure I want to chance putting myself through a subsequent experience that leaves both my feelings hurt, and my palate unsatisfied.

REALLY POOR SERVICE- WILL NOT BE RETURNING Honestly, worst service Ive had to date in a restaurant. We were seated 20 minutes with out seeing a waiter. People came in after us and their orders were taken before ours. I grabbed a worker walking by who said something to what I can only presume was the manager. 30 more minutes pass and still nothing. Again, people around us are getting served and their orders are getting taken, but were being ignored. Not sure if it was because we are non-Indian, because the people getting served were Indian and we are white. So, we get up to leave and finally the waiter comes up to take our order. I made a comment that hes lucky, because weve been waiting for an hour and we were about to leave, and he gets an attitude with me. Of course, my husband doesnt back me up, so this guy probably feels he can talk to me however he wants to. He asks me if I cant see how busy they are, and I reply with, "Well, Im not a blind woman, but youve been taking orders for people who arrive after we did and weve been here an hour." No apology. Still bad attitude. So, we left and we wont be returning. Id say that if you are a white person and you want good service and comparable Indian food, try out the Bananna Leaf on Bethel OR New India Restaurant, also on Bethel. Dont waste your money on Udipi.

The service, reception was pathetic to start off with. I had gone there with 9 of my friends & our orders took more than 75 minutes to reach us. The management did not even care a damn. No water refill was offered too. We ordered Kancheepuram Idli, Pongal and different Dosas.Dosas were good and nothing to complain, but Kancheepuram Idli and Pongal was Awful. *Kancheepuram Idli is not a normal/usual idli colored yellow with Cashew, Corriander leaves decorated at the top. I am from Kancheepuram and it was pathetic to see people claim this colored Idli as Kancheepuram Idli. Please visit Kanchipuram and have good Kanchipuram Idli to see the difference yourselves. * Pongals consistency was bad too. Rice wasnt properly cooked and the rice wasnt mashed as it should be in a Pongal. Sambhar was justtoo watery. Aviyal was excellent though. On complaining to the management about the delay and the food quality, manager said it was because of their employee shortage and did not even apologized. This is not the first time this has happened to me. This is in fact the second time, I had this reception. I had ordered Dosas then and escaped. Verdict: If you are prepared to wait for more than an hour and eat a very ordinary food, then this is the place for you.

What a horrible experience. I will NEVER go back to Udipi. These guys need to learn some serious lessons on how to behave. I went to Udipi Lunch Buffet on 8/31 along with my office colleagues. I have been here several times so far, and always had some issues with Customer Service. However, 8/31 was the highlight of Udipis most arrogant behavior. I can tolerate bad service but not arrogance. On paying the bill at the counter, the person at the counter, named Raj, asked us "which table". I pointed and showed where we sat, and every time he had trouble following us. I explained 3 times in different ways pointing to the table. Udipi guy was irritated and shouted at me that "it is your responsibility to tell me which table you took". I told him that I already did that 3 times although it is hotels responsibility to know where the customers sit. This is Udipi guys exact response "This is how it is here. If you dont like, please pick another place and do NOT come again". What?!?!? He was talking as if he is doing me the favor. We are the "customer" paying for the food and service, and it is "us" who pick the restaurants and do the favor to them - not the other way around. When I was about to exit he repeated "I wish you will not come again".

I have been to this restaurant twice for dinner. Udupi is a place in Karnataka, India, known for great and delicious food. That is what attracted me to this place at first. One visit to this place changed my opinion. The quality of food is below par. If you are there for dinner, expect some cold(not freshly prepared) food. The customer service part is worst too. Do not get surprised if the server slider the plate on the table while serving or bangs the water jug on the table. Ive experienced it. It may be just one or two of the servers but yes you can expect bad service. Bottom line - I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone. Ive heard from my colleagues that it was good last year but certainly not good now. I hope this review is taken in a constructive manner to improve the quality of this restaurant. I am not an enemy of this hotel nor am I a competetor to write bad about them. It is just the bad experience I have had with it both the times. All the best to the management. Please do maintain the restaurant well as it represents INDIA here and if anything is bad, the nation gets a bad name. I kindly request the management.
