Committing to brunch at Jing Fong is committing to a strong current of people, sounds, and tastes. If youre new to dim sum, Jing Fong offers an amazing experience similar to what you might find in China. If youre old to dim sum, youve probably been here three times but you have two other places where you like the food better. **This review is primarily for someone new to dim sum. If you see the crowd with a few blond heads congregated outside the Elizabeth Street entrance, youve found the right place. Push through to the host stand, put in your name, happily accept the 20 minutes they quote you. Take the briefest moment to marvel at the huuuuuge escalator that will take you to your table and food in about 20 minutes. Now, be quick about it, continue the walk down Elizabeth Street until the street Ts. Just to the left, youll see Vivi Bubble Tea. Go order a small jasmine green tea with bubbles ($2 cash). Stick a fat straw in that sucker and suck er down. Feel happy. Get hype about the meal ahead of you. By the time you get back, it will probably be your turn, but dont expect anyone to tell you that. Let the host know, and insist to be next if theyve skipped your number. It will be no problem. OK, TIME TO EAT! Go up the looooong escalator. Get swept along the tide of waving and beckoning. Marvel at the sea of humanity and red decor. Sit alongside strangers. Receive tea. Ask for water. Let your hunger level and curiosity guide how many things you take from the very first cart that rushes to your table, but dont be afraid to say no and hold out for the better ones. The better ones: Sticky rice with chicken wrapped in banana leaf Steamed pork buns Fried taro with ground pork inside Radish cakes (although they were unusually shrimpy this past time) Shrimp in long rice noodle Huge ass plate of greens (you may have to go to the "buffet" to get them--dont forget your stamp card!) Egg custards The less good ones: Dumplings (pork especially) Sesame balls (you think theyll be good, but they arent) Chicken feet Tripe (not my thing) Havent tried: Clams That big pot of mushy tofu stuff scooped to order Pro tip: Drink lots of tea. It will keep you from overeating and it will speed along the metabolism process, if you know what I mean. Flip the lid to indicate that the pots empty, and youll get a new one pronto.

Dim sum is a really nice way to try all sorts of dishes, finding out what you like and what you don’t like, at affordable price. The inside had a small lobby with hostess table. When it gets packed (which I heard this place gets completely packed all the time), I assume you give your name to a staff here. On the day we went, there was no wait, so we went right up the looooong escalator. About half way up, the mood of the restaurant starts to change, with huge, beautiful chandelier. Then there is this huge, enormous dining room, tables after tables. They have all sorts of tables, both in shape and size. Most of them are round table, small and large. We were quickly spotted by staff (there were few staffs on stand-by right at the top of escalator). They have walkie talkie to communicate in this large space, and the staff got on the walkie talkie to tell another staff who is in charge of seating people. She called us over and we hurried over to a large round table. It is all “shared” table, unless you are coming with large group of people. We were given a dim sum card as soon as we sat down, which is how they keep track of what you order. Don’t lose this one! What I really liked about this place is that they have these old-fashioned dim sum carts, pushed by female staff everywhere. Each one will be carrying something different, from dumpling, meat, tofu, baked goods, desserts… Just stop them and ask what they have, point to what you want, and they will put it on your table. Overall, we had a great dim sum experience here. We learned what we liked and what we didn’t like, in which I can say we liked most of what we tried. I would recommend to focus on the savory dim sum here, and not their dessert. Dim sum is a fun way to eat, and great way to share with family and friends. Im sorry the reviewer prior had such a terrible experience here. But to be honest, given my own experiences, those of my friends and others, as well as the 4-star/80-review reputation here, I think he may have missed the point. JING FONG is a dim sum restaurant. If we were talking a species of food service possibilities, "dim sum" would be the genus, with subspecies "push cart" and belonging to the race of "Palace". THIS IS NOT A DESTINATION "CHINESE RESTAURANT", (though YES, the do have a full Cantonese menu, just like Disney World is not a hot dog stand, but you can get a Goofy Dog at one of their snack bars) and youd do well to find something else among the gazillion possibilities mere feet away from Jing Fongs front door if thats truly what you want. Im certain many diners stumble in making the same mistaken assumption, for as Chinese Palaces go, you will find relatively few here in this neighborhood, and happening upon Jing Fong would be tantamount to picking Ceasars Palace on the Vegas strip, versus one of the more modest hole-in-the-wall gambling bars youd pass without so much as a glance. Here, you go for the Dim Sum and the Banquet; You cannot, at a dim sum palace, order a la carte entrees such as youve become accustomed to doing at a traditional Soup-Salad-Appetizer-Entree-Dessert restaurant. Stay on the main floor for that. Here, in the big hall, you must be prepared to settle in, enjoy a pot of tea, and watch as the circus of food unfolds before you. And to say that I get to the register with my "punch card" (which is how they keep track of what youve ordered and eaten) and almost laugh at how little they charge would not be an overly dramatic statement.

Went here for dim sum. I was quite surprised to see this place not packed on a weekend AND around 11 am. I guess people in NY dont do dim sum until lunch time. You would never see this in LA. Places would be packed by 10 am on a weekend. I havent been to other dim sum places in NY yet but the physical space is huge! It might be the biggest dim sum place in NY. I have a strong suspicion that many tourists go here. Ill review the food as a whole since I dont know how to write out all the names of the food since I only know them in chinese. Overall, food quality was edible. It is definitely sub-par when compared to LA. But for NY, its probably a-okay. Would I come back? Possibly, not probably (50% vs 75% respectively). But I want to try other dim sum places first. Service wasnt that bad. It is what you would expect at a chinese restaurant. You tell them how many people in your party, and they tell you to go to the person in the black jacket waving his/her hand in the opposite side of the room. We got our tea and glasses of water almost immediately. No complaints there. I asked one of the staff members that I was looking for these 2 particular dishes and she brought back one. I thought that was good. 50% is better than 0%. Only thing that was a little different here was you bring your own bill to the cashiers desk and you pay there. You dont pay at your table. The decor was nothing special. Just a lot of red and pink. Typical chinese restaurant. Only good thing was I didnt have a STRONG smell of the restaurant after we left!!
