Came here twice in one weekend as we were staying in the area. The first time we visited was on a Friday night. It was fairly busy but not packed and we found that a lot of people come in about an hour or two before the Old Creamery starts so beware of this if youre hoping to miss a rush. The guy that greeted us said that the lady would be back to seat us. After a minute or so the lady hadnt come to get us, and the guy started getting very frantic. He was mumbling and running all over looking for the lady to seat us. Dont know why he couldnt just do it himself, but whatever. After he finally found the lady, she sat us in the front dining room. We could hear the man at the desk answering the phone and talking to customers and it was a nightmare. He was totally lost and had a lot of public anxiety. Not someone you put at the front to deal with people. I actually half felt bad for him, and even more so considering his co-worker at the desk was very rude and impatient with him. The lady at the desk was extremely bossy and had no problem sharing her life story with everyone in the restaurant, and was even showing pictures of things to people from her cell phone! This created a very interesting ambiance. Im all for feeling "at home", but this was an uncomfortable level of casual. Okay, back to the service and food. Our server was a fairly young gal who was very friendly and accommodating. She got our drinks and everything right away. My husband ordered the walleye dinner and I ordered the baked steak dinner. His walleye was very dry and greasy and neither one of us cared for it, but my steak was pretty good. The fried potatoes were home style and we loved them, although the gravy was just from a package. The green beans were just okay, but the corn is canned and dripping in watery leftovers. We enjoyed the beets, coleslaw, and cottage cheese. The bread was locally made and excellent. The server told us we could pay at the desk, so we did. The guy was on the phone with a customer who was clearly confusing him, so it took awhile to get our bill paid. In the meantime, I was looking at their locally made sodas and the lady had to tell us her entire life story about how her husband makes those sodas and then was telling us a lot of information we really did not care to know. We finally got our bill paid and were ready to just leave as it was such a strange atmosphere. We ate at the Ox Yoke for breakfast and it was delicious, so we had considered going back for lunch but instead decided to try Ronneburgs one more time. I really enjoyed my baked steak so I wanted to get it again. Thankfully, there were different people at the desk. Two girls were there and a very young gal seated us in a large room. We didnt care for the room too much as it was large and dark, but we arent the kind to ask to move so we stayed put. Our server took awhile to get there and the other girl in the room had gotten to her table that was sat after us before ours got to us. Our server finally came and we asked to try the sodas so we got one of each. They were quite tasty. We tried to ask her about the history and she said she didnt know too much but gave us the basics. It was short and impersonal, and she just wanted our order. My husband got the sourbraten and I got the baked steak again. She took forever to bring the food. The salads were great again, but she didnt even ask if we wanted refills. When our hot food came, it was freezing cold. We had seen her slumping around not doing anything, so it was likely sitting there waiting for us. It would have been good if it wasnt cold. She didnt preclear any of our dishes and just handed us our ticket. It wasnt even the right ticket, so we waited for her to come back and she never did. We went to the desk to pay and the nice lady there helped us. She fixed it and apologized, and it was very quick and easy. We later ate at Ox Yoke and had a perfect experience. Skip the faults here and go next door. Dont know who runs this but they need to pay more attention.

The staff was very nice and accommodating. Couldnt have been more politie. My problem is with the food. Ive been all over the country and in every new place I go I try to find a German restaurant. This is the first one I ever went to that I was actually really disappointed. I always order wienerschnitzel wherever I go and it was no different here. I enjoyed the "endless" sides, the beets were very good, cottage cheese was good also. My first real disappointment was noticing that in both the veggies and the sauerkraut there was red peppers chopped up. First time Ive ever seen that, not my cup of tea, but whatever, maybe that was just something they did special here, I could have looked past it. Then my heart sank as the schnitzel was laid on the table. At every other restaurant it will usually be served on an oversized plate and the thing is still falling off the plate, pounded paper thin, covered in excellent crispy batter, etc. This was not a schnitzel but a fried pork chop in the most pathetic batter Ive ever seen. No effort was taken to pound the thing out. Im not exaggerating when I say it was a fried pork chop. After taking one bite, I debated on leaving right there, but I decided Id eat it since I already had some of the sides. I thought, well at least let me get some good mustard, and I can still enjoy this. For those who dont know, mustard at a German restaurant should be hot as hell with horseradish. So I ask for the mustard. My heart sank like the battleship Bismarck as I saw the waiter bring out the ketchup and mustard bottles like youd find at a fast food joint. I tried it, and sure as day, it was yellow mustard. I see this place has many good reviews, and I think maybe these other people just dont know what a real German restaurant should be. Im leaving this review because I want to see this German restaurant succeed and improve. Beat your pork out, find a crispier fuller batter, and for god sakes, if someone asks for mustard, dont bring out yellow mustard accompanied with ketchup.

Cant say enough great things about this restaurant, and especially the staff. We ate here on our way home to Montana on a Thursday and it was pretty busy. There was a short wait but we didnt mind. Our waitress was working hard and had a lot of tables but was very attentive and quite a hoot. She had some great recommendations and my sausage dinner was outstanding. The beets and coleslaw are excellent, along with the other sides. My wife loved her fried chicken as well. The lemon pie was also fantastic. For the amount of food you receive, the price was very good and the ambiance is great. On the way out, I asked the front desk about things to see in the area and they were most helpful. In fact, they saved us a visit to the visitors center and answered all my questions and sent us to some great places. They had some recommendations of things to see other than shops and we really appreciated those and their information. We also found out that the gal loves to travel to Montana and we had a great visit with her about our home state. Despite being busy, the food came out fast and the service was excellent, and they really make time for you no matter what. If we ever pass through again, we will be back. Great experience and highly recommend it.
