On occasion, you come across a restaurant so perfect you try to look for faults as hard as you can. Nothing can possibly be that fantastic-Brugge is that kind of place. We went last night, Friday, April 2nd. It is/was Final Four weekend, incredibly busy and parking was a nightmare. We were wise enough to call ahead, and had a five minute wait. I appreciate the open kitchen design, as a future chef myself I like to know what to expect. Our table was on the upstairs balcony, where we had a delightful view of Broadripple and enjoyed the fresh air. If I had a complaint, it would be that the outside area isnt well lit and when the sun went down, seeing my food became a little bit of a challenge. This is likely a practical decision as Broadripple has an infamous insect problem. As excited about the beer as the food, I had the Tripel de Rippel. It was excellent, and the unfortunate first in a series of beer I had that evening. I should have kept notes, because I want to explain exactly what made it awesome, but unfortunately I dont possess that sort of memory. As for food, I DO remember it well. I ordered the cheese plate for starters, the steak frites for my meal, my husband duck confit sandwich with dried cherry and lambic compote with spicy mustard and fried leek the and our best friend the Indiana duck breast crepe with sweet onion confit. The cheeses were excellent, and I have no complaints against them. I do wish there were more to go with them, as by the end I was eating the cheese by itself and it got a bit pathetic after awhile. There were only 3 pieces of apple and a handful of bread slices....to share for 3 people. Fortunately our food came and I lost interest when I saw the sheer volume of frites and steak lying in front of me. My steak was excellent. Hangar steak is a tricky monster, but mine was excellently prepared-perfectly seared on the outside and still perfectly red on the inside. I honestly have no idea how people can eat steak anything but medium rare. Again, it was too perfect so I have to find something about it to complain about....there was just a little too much black pepper for my tastes. Though, you would not have known it had you seen me wolfing it down like a crazed animal. The frites? Oh the frites.....I cant say anything bad about them. They were amazing, and it is a rare occasion when something is salted to my taste. Ive been guiltily carrying around my own bottle of sea salt as of late, but Brugge beat me to it. They were, in a word, sublime. Did I mention their sauces? Home-made ketchup? Hot curry? Roasted Garlic Aioli? How can you go wrong? You cant. You seriously cant. Unfortunately I didnt get the chance to try my companions dishes. I polled them on their meals. My husband was impressed with his sandwich, though he thought the duck breast a tad dry. It didnt stop him from eating the entire thing, though. Our best friend enjoyed his crepe, though he commented that while the breast was perfectly moist, there were a few too many onions and not enough confit. All in all, they were very satisfied. As full as I was, I saw my husbands eyes light up when our adorable waiter, Noah, mentioned the Nutella crepes. We had to order them, and werent disappointed. The incredibly tart cherry syrup paired so very well with the rich hazelnut creme and was the best way imaginable to cap off such an excellent dinner. At some point I will break my no-seafood-in-the-midwest rule and try their mussels. I am still skeptical but have heard they are both fresh and incredible. One of these days, Brugge, one of these days. We will be back.

I hate leaving this review because the food is always excellent and the beer is always at least good, but Brugge disappointed me so much recently that Ill never be back. I had family visiting from out of town and I wanted to impress them... So we went to Brugge. Our experience began with being greeted by the most lackadaisical seating staff Ive ever met who didnt know and didnt care if they had seating available on the patio. That experience was followed up by being brusquely advised that the kitchen was closing at 9 by our waitress (by the time we left, we were reminded of this about 3 or 4 times). That unfortunately set the tone for our visit. One of my visiting family is gluten and dairy intolerant (hint, do not go here if you are) and our waitress was almost angered by this news and seemed offended that she was required to answer questions about ingredients used in various dishes. With a wholly unnecessary attitude, she stated that she wasnt a dietician and wouldnt guarantee the contents of anything. After that, my sister felt like a burden to the waitress and stopped asking any more questions. Finally we settled on the mussels as this seemed our only safe option with the stipulation that the bread be served on the side rather than atop the mussels in the pot as per usual. When the mussels came out, our waitress removed the lid and revealed the bread, right on top. This prompted a very suspiciously sarcastic "oh oops..." and I do not recall an offer being made to take it back and serve us a new pot that wasnt potentially contaminated. My sister is extremely sensitive, but given the hostile undertones of the wait staff and our general experience, she chose to just risk it. You know what? The mussels, beer, and fries WERE great, they really were, but never in my life have I been more embarrassed in my selection of a restaurant as host to visitors. Never in my life have I or someone in my party been made to feel like more of a burden as a paying customer. Sorry Brugge, I enjoyed your food, but you lost my business forever last night.

This was my husbands and I first trip to Indi to visit family my family was so excited to show us their favorite restaurants. Since we got into town late we ran straight over to dinner late being 8:30. The seating staff looked not thrilled at all to see us. It should have been our first clue. After an awkward conversation we were seeted. Our waitress was very prompt and quickly informed us we needed to order since the kitchen was closing at 9. Since we all know what its like to stare down the last 30 min of our work day, we got to work looking at the menu. However I have horrible food allergies I have celiac disease and Im allergic to dairy. I know its hard for wait staff and restaurants to cater to me I know its a hassle. I try so hard to be appoligetic when I order. I never expected to be almost yelled at when the lady explained to me she was not a dietitian and she could make me sick I started turning her out as she kept inching closer into my space I have never in my last 6 years ever been treated like that. I eventually just had interrupt her and her rant which I was was ignoring at that point becauce she was speeking compleat nonsense, and ask her what was in one particular dish. I ordered the mussels just the that and we split it because we didnt want to deal with her. We should have just left. I asked for the butter to be left off the dish and the bread on the side. it arrived with the bread in on top. She was clearly not really surprised by this and after that long drawn out conversation I took that as a clear message of screw you. My message to you as a business is please educate your staff, that was the interaction I have always feared I would get and now that I lived through it Im glad I will be a bigger advocate for my self and being practically yelled at by a waitress was not as bad as I have feared. Trust me I dont want to be this picky but Im on vacation and I dont have much option but to go out to a restaurant to eat.
