How a Friday evening meal ruins a pricey weekend in Monterey... Avoid the fish specials... Ive been to this place on numerous occasions and have always been pleased. Good beer selection, good pub food (including an excellent curry). But unfortunately this time I had the fish special; turbot filets and ended up sick for the whole weekend. Based on the onset of discomfort, it was no doubt food poisoning of some sort. Perhaps I should been suspicious when the waiter announced how lucky I was that the chef was placing two filets on the plate for the rest of the evening instead of just one. Old fish that had to be used or thrown out? Also the waiter tried to impress by taking our order and not writing it down... Unfortunately the only way that this move impresses is when the order comes out perfect. There were errors and omissions when the order came out. Not impressed. I will probably go back to this place again, but will definitely stick to the main pub fare... no fish for me thanks.

We came for dinner on a busy Friday night. The dining room was crowded but we only had to wait about 5 minutes for a table. There is not a lot of space to wait and especially since the restaurant is not on street level you cant really wait outside. Once seated, I ordered the blackened fish sandwich with a cup of clam chowder. The chowder was delicious, definitely the star of the meal. The sandwich was also good (particularly the tarter sauce). I wish the piece of fish had been slightly bigger. I was full after the meal but there was more bread than fish so I just felt a little short changed. My boyfriend ordered the Cottage Pie, which was full of flavor, but it tasted (and looked) like it had been sitting under a heat lamp for a while waiting to be ordered. It seemed like it had been served out of a big pan so it was not made to order but rather made in bulk.

Came here on a recommendation for their fish and chips. The fish was frozen (not fresh) cod that was used, and the fries were standard run-of-the-mill. Also ordered a bowl of their clam chowder as well. It had a familiar restaurant quality taste like it was Campbells restaurant quality line Ive had before. It didnt taste fresh either. Nothing stood out to me about their food, and I would suspect that nothing is made fresh here at all which is a shame considering theyre half a mile (or less) from the ocean. Decor and ambiance was fun and matched the pub-like feel of the place. The bathrooms smelled like urine which I didnt find surprising as well. The food was just okay. Would I come back? no. Would I recommend it? Not at all.

Came here at first basically because it was the only place open late and Im back for the second time. The decor is great -- kind of Old England garage sale mixed with heavy wooden beams and lots of shiny brass. You walk through the bar to get to the dining area -- the bar is usually full and somewhat boisterous. Seated at the table, you feel surrounded by stuff: ship models, brass plates, dueling pistols, etchings of English history, and all kinds of whatnots. The food is very British but excellent. The fish and chips are delicate pieces of cod lightly battted -- no greasy beer batter herethey have roast beef, curried chicken, and other choice options. Gluten free menu also. This is a new favorite.

The Crown has many locals that frequent there business and Im one of them . What makes this place extra special to me is the blending of locals with all the great students from DLI and the NPS along with the Monterey institute of international study plus travelers from Europe and Asia alike . I have never found myself short of good company and conversation . I also have had the blessing of meeting a couple of really wonderful ladys there too, I really do feel sorry for thoughs people just traveling through whom leave reviews about good food or service bla bla,, thats great ,, but sadly they really are missing the essence of this place . Its an unique spot . Dont miss it

The food was absolutely delightful. 2010 US OPEN travelers hitting the second Monterey Pub in as many nights...this one hit the mark. This Pub actually looked like a Pub we experienced in when visiting London/Windsor, and the food so far was the best "Pub" food in Monterey. We like to sample local brews, when traveling...this Pub did not have any, but boasted a large of assortment of English libations, staying true to its niche. Possibly the waiter could have recommended something truly unique, and British...an additional sale and possibly a richer beverage experience for these travelers...we ordered ice tea...just a suggestion...

Great food, amazing service, and a beautiful pub. I would have given this place five stars easily but there was one thing that really stung me about the place and that was the locals. I realize that this is a popular college bar, but I have never seen so many tough guy obnoxious douchbags... most of which were in theyre 30s and 40s!!! My party really planned on spending the evening here but I just knew that it would have been a bad idea. Call it bad timing, but we went here on consecutive nights hoping that it would have been different, but naa. Take out next time Im in town.

Beautiful little pub with a lot of history. You feel like youre in a local in York. All the British Navy artifacts and classic, old decorations were brought from the UK, by the owner, over the course of many years. Great spot for locals and tourists. Theres a pretty cool regular crowd. Bartenders are awesome. Try the curried potato wedges, you wont be sorry. Sloats steak and mushroom pie is amazing. Best thing: classic pub ales on tap. Old Speckled Hen, Bodingtons, Belhaven, Fullers London Porter.. excellent taps. Things get pretty amped on the patio late. Good place for a party.

You can get food from their whole menu late here, and its fantastic and affordable! I had the steak and mushroom pie and my husband had the lamb stew, which was a special that night. I think both were $14 each, so definitely worth the price for the quality and quantity of food. The place was pretty packed, but we still felt like the people at the bar were not intrusive to our super late 10pm dinner. I had a boddingtons and my husband had a different British Ale. The atmosphere was super fun and spunky and our waiter was the best.

Great food and atmosphere and the owners are jewels... Sara and her husband always make everyone feel at home.. I have been going to the Crown & Anchor for years during the August Car events and at other times. Sara presented me which her signature Toffee dessert on a birthday and I have had to have each time I visit.. I always bring new friends to the restaurant and enjoy their happy faces having enjoyed a great and reasonable meal in a cheerful environment.. I will always be back!

You complained about no internet!? You yuppie scum, youre at a restaurant! Put down the iPhone and pick up an iPint ! Of course reception isnt going to be ideal, its downstairs! This place is awesome!! Food was really good and affordably priced especially for its location. Very family friendly also. Brought my girlfriend and her 6yr old and we loved it. This place just made it to the "whenever Im in town I stop here" list. Merica! (and Ngland! I guess)
