The search for soup dumplings in Chinatown is a tricky one - its a balance between waiting in long lines and enjoying a good soup dumpling. Chinatown most beloved Joes Shanghai and Shanghai Cafe are best known for their soup dumplings, however over the years, the quality of soup dumplings here has declined. Shanghai Asian Cuisine, the lesser-known sister restaurant of Shanghai Asian Manor, is a gem hidden next to an alcove on Elizabeth Street, next to dim sum giant, Jing Fong Restaurant. Shanghai Asian Cuisine offers up a similar menu to their sister restaurant consisting of dim sum plates and traditional Shanghainese dishes, however the soup dumplings are their crowning achievement. A thin layer of hand-kneaded dough envelops a juicy pork filling immersed in a piping hot broth. Each order comes with 6 soup dumplings and a ginger-soy sauce-vinegar concoction in a saucer. The tongs are provided to pick up the soup dumplings, but be very careful not to puncture it as the steaming liquid inside is prone to bursting from the thin layer of dumpling skin. The best way to eat the soup dumpling is to place it in a wide spoon and bite a small hole to drain the broth into the spoon. Slurp and enjoy. Dim Sum: $4+ Plates: $8-15

I have had dinner here several times now and this place is not bad. The place might be small and tight, but the food is packed with flavors. My all-time-favorite dish from this place is their shanghai dumplings, the little rounds ones that you bite into and the juicy soup burst out. What makes this this dish so unique is the flavors that make this into one...from the pork filling, to the delicious sack of soup, to the dumpling wrap that holds it all together. Oh yea, dont forget to dip it into the vinegar sauce, makes the whole thing taste much better. Service is quick, so the minute you order, the minute your food arrives (well, more like a few minutes, but you get what Im talking about)! Price is reasonable, but sometimes you wish you a get bit more for what you pay for; otherwise, its a good place for shanghai, if you have a craving for it.

The food is not touristy. It is ethnic Shanghainese. However, non Chinese diners will not have buyers remorse as nearly any dish is tasty and or interesting. Try not to default to Rice dishes, trust me, out of fear of extending your palate. Rather, pick a protein choice , chicken, beef, fish, tofu, _noodles_, and add sides. Vegetables, *steamed dumplings*, appetizers, etc. Explore by starting small, and expect to add as portion size, yumminess strike you. O! In Chinese culture a small bowl of rice is usual as a base on which to literally plop your bitefuls. This adds texture, heartiness, a painters palate if you will on which to mix, manipulate flavors!! Good eats!

Great cheap restaurant in Chinatown it is *Cash Only* though. I went here with a few friends based off their request and it was well worth it. You could tell this was a great place because there were a lot of locals and no tourists inside. I got the #1 which was crab and pork soup dumplings and they were delicious and fairly price. Watch out though when you eat these things they can splash all over the place. For my main course I got the the beff stew with noodles which was just Ok but worth it for the price. I would definitely come back here for the dumplings!

Quiet cozy place to eat not noisy. But certain food items were not that great to me I had the Shanghai spring roll which was crispy but there wasnt a lot of filling on the inside. Then I had a dish called fried shrimp with fruit flavored sauce it was too Tangy and sour for my taste and the last thing I ordered was something to go House special Shanghai lo mein with which was a mix of chicken pork shrimp beef and some vegetables and that was amazingly good I would highly recommend it

Best dimsums ever! We have been there a bunch of times and each and every time the food has been awesome. Salt and pepper squid: SUPER!!! soup dumplings, shrimp shumai....the list goes on. Wait staff are great too. I always go with my kids and they are friendly and accommodating. Tiny hole in the wall space which fills up quick. I have waited over an hour for a table. But so totally worth it. Go early and avoid the weekends for dinner. LOVE IT!!

Ive known this to be Shanghai Snack Bar, and it doesnt much matter. I still go for crabmeat xiaolungbao. Fabulous, consistent, juicy and just the right size. Scallion pancakes are great but often oily as they are fried. Shanghai stir fried rice cakes and pan fried dumpling are equally wonderful. Definitely on my list of Chinatown eats if you dont care for the ambiance.

A great place to dine in for holiday lunch when you are shopping all over NYC! Small place! Big taste! This is where you want to eat for soup dumplings. It was recommended by Asian friends and its buzzing with patrons till about 9pm. Come have a taste of what many try to keep a secret. Service is good. Tea and water refilled. Place is nice and everyone is friendly.

Small joint featuring well-made dishes such as the soup dumplings, the mock duck in bean curd(cold), and the drunken chicken(your choice of dark, white, or combo chicken that has been soaked in rice wine for hrs, also cold). Ive also seen specials posted such as truffle soup dumplings. This is one of my go-to places for consistency in Shanghai cuisine.

Oh, dont go here unless, youre getting the pan-fried pork dumplings. The food such as the lo mein had a horrible reused oil after taste! And they definitely use MSG. Me and my friend got full quickly over a small portion! Right! Basically youd pay like $10 for a dish, and its a pretty small portion.. with that awful after taste! Rip off!

This spot is a little tight, but the food has big flavor, so its all good. I recommend the soup dumplings. The service is fast, and the prices are reasonable. The portions are not huge, but the quality of the food is higher than your standard Chinese restaurant, so as least you wont go in to a food coma.

Just had a terrible experience at this place. Vegetables with insect on the dish. I guess they never wash their vegatables. And they charge me extra for the food. Watch out your bill. They might charge you extra if you dont watch your bill. I attached the photo here which you can see the insect.

Food was good but dishes were small compared to other places. The main problem is that it seems like they only have one chef and it too forever to bring food up. Every table is being fed one dish at a time. Took them over an hour for the first dish. Dinner took over 2 hours.

Ive been a regular customer here. The food is amazing and I thought the servers were generally friendly and pleasant, compared to some of the other Chinese restaurants Ive been to. And the prices cannot be beat. Definetely recommended if youre looking for a nice asian meal!

This address is not correct, they are one street over. Food was better than i had anticipated. The bathrooms are dangerous and messy though. Very slippery floor. I would have no trouble eating here again if i were in NYC. It was rated A at my time of patronage.
