I had been a regular at Bernies since they opened and always loved the food. It reminded me of they great Delis up in New York and North Jersey. The last three times I went to Bernies on my lunch hour (1130-1230). I get there just ahead of the lunch rush. Each of those times I had to wait over 30 minutes for my usual Summer Special. By the time I was served and able to inhale my food , I was late getting back to the office. My last visit a few weeks ago, my order was wrong and I didnt want to wait another 30-40 minutes to get it fixed, so I eat it under protest. I vowed never to return until today. My co-worker was craving Bernies #300 sandwich and I decided to join him and give it another chance. Today we arrived at 1150 and I ordered a summer special and my buddy the #300. The order was entered at 1206pm. ( Not crowded at this point) the bill was over 25 buck for two sandwiches and two drinks from the fridge. Then the wait , and wait , and wait. Our number was passed over and so on. 42 minutes later, I asked the girl at the counter and she nicely told the sandwich makers to put a rush on our order ( presumably that was forgotten) . At this point my lunch hour was over and the Deli was swamped with people ( all sweating from the lack of AC in the joint). The sandwich maker gruffly tossed the bag on the counter and then the girl handed it over. Again, the wrong order. instead of a Sumer Special, I got a BLT that was half the size as the way they used to be. Once again, I was out of time and didnt want to wait another 30 minutes for them to fix the mistake. Bernies is off the list for lunch establishments in our firm. A big disappointment - service is a fail and the quality is a fail. Bernie should manage his store and over see the quality control aspect of the food being pushed out to his customers instead of being the order taker. If you own the place, then run it. Hire a college kid to take the orders and be the boss - make sure you are putting out quality food and at a decent speed for the high prices that are charged. Bernies Deli is defiantly a NO GO from now on.

It pains me to say this, but Bernies has taken a turn for the worse. I was there the first week it opened, years ago, and I loved their sandwiches, beer selection, and good potato salad. However, the past three times I have gone, they have either butchered my order, or butchered my sandwich. Today, I ordered the West Coast sandwich, which is supposed to have sprouts, tomato, avocado, mayo, and sourdough. Instead, I got white bread, spinach, tomato, and mayo. There was a pathetic sliver of avocado on one half of the sandwich, but nothing on the other. I couldnt even taste it. Further, my Moms Potato Salad had neither bacon nor cheddar, which is what you pay for when you order it. I dont mean there was a only a little on the salad, I mean, it was non existent. Previously, my Italian Cold Cuts bread was soaked with so much oil and vinegar that the bread was completely mushy and gross. Before that, my French sandwich didnt come on the right bread (french bread). If you are going to charge 8-10 dollars for a sandwich, you should probably make sure you can actually make the sandwich. Ive given Bernies a lot of business over the years, but after the failings that me (and a lot of my friends) have experienced over the last few months, I hate to say it, but I will not be going back.

The prices are not cheap, the service is slow and seating is minimal. I have been to Bernies a handful of times and each time I go I a more and more disappointed. Some of the highlights of my bad experience: telephoned in for a grilled chicken salad with ranch dressing (wanted blue cheese, not an option). Picked up the order, no dressing was included. The grilled chicken was advertised as being marinated, the chicken was bland and dry and did not have any hint of being marinated. Imagine how enjoyable that was without any salad dressing. The staff is mostly annoyed and rushed, especially the guy with the balding combover. I think he is the owner, but he acts like he is doing you a favor when you order something and hand over money for it.... just a poor general attitude. The only nice guy there is the older guy who always acts like it is the first time he is using the computer register. The kinishs are terribly bland and dry. The cow tongue is hit or miss depending on the freshness. Id say it is a step above a subway as far as quality of food but not worth double price.

What has happened to our favorite deli? We loved the meaty sandwiches and great salads that would fill us up at lunch! But things have changed. Unfortunately, the sandwiches are mostly bread with a couple of thin pieces of meat so we dont order those anymore. Today we tried a greek salad and it was more like a cucumber salad garnished with a few grape tomatoes, some chopped green peppers, a couple of slithers of onion, a few black olives and no more than 3/4 cup lettuce (and thats a generous estimate). To top it off, a small amount of feta cheese was mixed through out but the pieces were so small you really couldnt taste it. The cheese pieces were about the size of seeds. It was weird. The dressing was very strong, almost over bearing and honestly the whole thing didnt have much taste. We assume that is because the dressing was so strong. I expected a $7.99 salad to fill me up but after finishing my bowl of cucumbers I am still hungry! So, Bernies has let us down! Unless we hear of a change back in the old direction, we wont be eating there anymore!

I have been going to Bernies since it opened a couple of years ago. I enjoy this deli for its quaint, comfortable atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff, and delicious sandwiches. Being a vegetarian, its somewhat difficult to find healthy meals in Fairfax. The Veggie Special (my favourite) is chock full of fresh vegetables. They dont skimp like other delis. Although I agree that the prices are slightly high, I think its worth it. Locally-owned businesses are hard to find in Nova, so paying a dollar more for higher-quality food is a worthwhile investment for me. The staff is personable and efficient. It also speaks highly of the business when Bernie himself is there, investing his time to ensure quality.

This place is closed all the time. We went there on a Saturday afternoon because they said to come over. We got there at 5 and place closed at 6 but they already had the "closed" sign and the door was already locked. They seem annoyed we showed up wanting to buy their food! They didnt have anything we wanted to order, service was extremely poor. The young, blond woman there was not cut out for service industry. She was rude and argued with us that they get a lot of customers despite they didnt have any of the sandwich meats we wanted. What they cobbled together as a sandwich was ok, But we will not be going there ever again. Not worth it.
