I dont hate calypso cafe. But I feel like they hate vegetarians. Multiple times I have asked to get a veggie burger patty on top of the black bean salad as oppose to meat or rice. They refuse to do this, even when Im willing to pay. Today I was starving and craving this salad. The east Nashville location (the nicest of the locations) always substitutes a veggie patty for me. I know the franchises are owned by different owners. Thats not an excuse for bad ownership. Today when I again pleaded for the 100 oaks location to please let me put a patty on top of my black bean salad, they refused. I told them I was more than happy to pay the dollar or whatever the sub charge would be. They told me I would have to buy a "veggie burger sandwhich" at the usual price but they would discount the .95 for no bread or any fixings. I asked how much that would cost. They told me I would have to pay $7 on top of the $9 or so dollars that the black bean salad cost. Look, as a vegetarian, I just want a protein rich meal. I dont want two helpings of black canned beans--which is 100 oaks calypsos only solution for me not wanting rice or chicken on the black bean salad. There is no way a veggie patty can have such a gross overhead that there has to be a $7 charge just to put it on top of a salad. I would welcome the owner of the company to respond to this review, and allow me some insight on why I cant pay, say a dollar or even two, in order to make such a beautiful meal happen. I mean, its not that I dont like your food. Its that I think its a little ridiculous to tout yourself as a vegetarian friendly establishment. I wont be back at the 100 oaks restaurant. I feel like if the owner is that strict and pompous, then its no place I want to be. East Nashville calypso, no worries. Yall are the sweetest. Thank god I live on your side of town. To bad I work by 100 oaks. Also, this review does not reflect service or mgmt of 100 oaks. They do a steady job. Just give me a veggie burger on my Black bean salad already!!!!

Couva Calypso or The Calypso Café @ 100 Oaks was a surprisingly nice experience. Its an trendy, Central American/Carribean island-esque themed restaurant with an emphasis on healthy, vegetarian, and vegan meals at an affordable price point. Now when I said "themed", I dont mean like the Rainforest Cafe or Aquarium Restaurant in the Opry Mills Mall; there arent any pictures of Castro shaking Che Guevaras hand nor any "props" of beached derelict row boats but they do play some interesting music. The music sounded a lot like some "Musica Latina", Dancehall, and possibly some classic Kingston Reggae...but the atmosphere isnt the most important thing here, its of course...the food. The food is so good here. The menu is easy to read with "V" marking vegan and/or vegetarian entrées and their website backs up these claims of a healthy menu; using "buzz words" like "low carbs, Trans-Fat, and no MSG or Gluten" and I have to say that Im convinced that most of their food isnt processed with preservatives. I had an all white meat Half-Chicken "Rotisseried" with Jamaican Curry seasoning (which was like an apple sauce with onions and spices), Boija Muffins, and a Mug of Soup. My wife had a similar dish and we also had the Cuban Black Bean Dip as an appetizer...it ALL was good...and that damn Fruit Tea "you must try this"!!! This place is definitely "a happening scene" for the hipster crowd but when night fell, all types of people came to eat there so no one should feel uncomfortable going here.My only dislikes were the tortilla chips (they just seemed too cheap) and the chairs were a little stiff (Im a big man so I like to have room to be comfortable). While I cant say for sure about the other locations, I recommend this one at 100 Oaks and I look forward to trying something else on the menu next time we are shopping in the area. Maybe Ill try a burger.....

When I came here, I wanted some SOLID cuban and/or caribbean food. Upon arriving though, I realized this place (which I later realized is a chain) was much more healthy and vegetarian themed than I thought. Dont get me wrong, I have nothing against vegetarian people.... I just really dont like vegetable only dishes. I was kind of put off by this. Also, they have some mexican stuff (nachos and maybe something else Im forgetting), which kinda throws me off the whole cuban caribbean vibe. I briefly considered leaving, but stayed just to see what it was like, seeing as there were a couple options that had chicken. Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised. I ended up getting Nachos and they had some pretty tasty salsaish thing on them, and the chicken was flavored well and it was a decent size portion and everything. So at this point Im thinking this is an okay place, but there really arent that many options for someone who wants meat. In particular, they lack pork on a lot of their dishes, and I say a lot of their dishes, because I know cubans, and cubans freakin love their pork, and its like on half their dishes. This chain is essentially sort of a mesh of several hispanic foods..... further meshed with a desire to make them healthy and/or vegetarian. Too bad cuban food is one of those cuisines that is inherently unhealthy.

I was initially put off by this place when we werent allowed to sit at a table until our entire party arrived. We were a 3 top waiting on one more person. Minutes after we were told to wait, a 2 top waiting on 1 person was allowed to sit down. At least keep your nonsensical rules consistent. The guy that served us did not treat us with any sort of server etiquette and basically rushed us to order. I got the incorrect sandwich because while I was ordering the server was distracted by another customer. The rice I ordered was severely undercooked and the sandwich I got that was $9.60 had dry, flavorless chicken and one piece of flimsy lettuce on it. I dont understand the allure of this restaurant at all but I may have just had a bad experience and might try it again in the future when its not so busy. The employees that work here should strive to give every customer the care and attention they deserve regardless of how busy it is.

Not at all what I expected. I got the impression that everything they served came processed and all they had to do was warm it up. The chips served with the dip were poorer than average. My wifes veggie burger was basically a hockey puck; not much better than the lowest priced veggie burger one might find in the frozen food section. I expected the slaw that came with my meal to have some Caribbean flair (some fresh herbs like cilantro, etc.) but instead I got something that wasnt much different than what one might find pre-packaged in the grocery store deli. On the positive side, the chicken was fall-off-the-bone. I dont know if it was just a bad night for the restaurant or what. I may go back by myself to give it another chance but I wont take my wife back there unless my experience is better. I am from the Caribbean and know Caribbean flavors so maybe my expectations are too high.
