So good and fun! Definitely a restaurant Im going to miss once I become fully raw. I always got the buttermilk pancakes w/white chocolate chips & bananas as a side..and it was delicious! The only down part is how long you have to wait. Ive sat for an hour before waiting to get seated..but thats only because everyone loves this place and its been packed every time Ive gone there! Ive had great memories at this place.. The first time I went there with my best friend, I was eating and somehow my seat began sliding from underneath of me..I felt it slipping but it was happened so quick, and I couldnt really do anything about it..as the person next to me was asking if I was alright, I look up at my best friend across from me and shes just cracking up, and as Im looking at her, she begins to start sinking down, and she did the exact same thing in her chair that I just did. It was too funny. The waiter even came up and asked if we were alright. It was really loud too, but it was definitely a good moment to look back on. Also one time when I went there with her, she had just got over the stomach flu but she felt better and was fine (so she thought), so we decided to go eat there. After she ate, she felt like she was about to puke and ran to the bathroom but it was full!..so she came back and was covering her mouth, and I handed her an empty cup but she proceeded to puke in the cup that was full of water next to it and then on to her plate..its something we crack up at now, Hahahaha. I tipped the waitress $10

It is crowded in the morning on weekends. However, if you dont want to make pancakes at the griddle, you can easily get a seat. Also, really early, or after the lunch rush, is better. The benedict dishes: we tried the veggie and the pork belly confit. The veggie one was actually better- the pork belly portion was pretty small- there was much more tasteless carrot ribbon and of the four pieces of belly one was pretty fatty. I was going to write a comment card on it- and found someone had already filled it in! She had the same comments about the pork belly and the carrots as I did. I also found the english muffin overcooked (had to really use some knife work to cut pieces), and was not able to detect any extra flavor from using bacon fat in the hollandaise. The hollandaise at Mothers is better. Making shapes with your pancakes with your party is still silly fun, and the number of interesting ingredients a customer can order to put in their pancakes now allows for a much more personalized experience per person that might be harder to create at home unless you invest in a big buffet of both savory and sweet ingredients. They also are offering more pancake batter flavors that vary seasonally. the best drink by far is the Slappy Bloody Mary

25 minute wait on a summer Monday morning but they took my cell number so we didnt need to stay at the crowded entrance. During the wait, my kids enjoyed drawing on the sidewalk with chalk provided at the hostess stand. The restaurant has both booths and family style seating, each with your groups item griddle embedded in the table. The table gets a little crowded, but the novelty makes up for it. Order from a variety of different flavored pancake batter that comes in squirt bottles so that you or the kids can make individualized pancakes of your own design. Two bottles was more than enough batter for my 8 and 7 year old. Order from a long list of sweet or savory toppings/fillings to spruce up your cakes. There are plenty of non-pancake options as well. I enjoyed the forest mushroom scramble (Three eggs scrambled with forest mushrooms, bacon, spinach & red onions. Topped with local goat cheese and served with potatoes & toast.) All in all, the food was good and the place is NOT just the griddle gimmick that I was worried it would be. My kids are demanding to return and I will oblige.

Food was fine...BUT. We were given a wait of 25 minutes. We sat and watched as 4 or 5 empty tables never got cleared. Meanwhile, servers and host stood at their stations or planted themselves at the host stand. Server was nice when we finally got seated. Food was good..unfortunately it came out piecemeal. We waited another 25 minutes for pancake batter. When offering to address the issue, manager thought it was appropriate to sit down next to me at my table. Really? She was willing to pay the bill. But I didt want that and didnt accept it. Because, thats not the point. The fact that she thought it was appropriate to address me about something by sitting "chummily" next to me shoulder to shoulder is precisely why I waited 25 minutes while tables sat empty. TRAINING!..obviously we are not bothering to go back. Theres so many wonderful food venues in Portland. Why bother.

Summary: Overpriced, inedible pancakes. Food: Poor Service: Good Value: Poor We went on a Sunday morning, arrived about 8:45 and had only a half hour wait for a table with a griddle. Hint: Ive been told that its better to arrive around 9 or 9:30 when the first wave of customers is leaving then to be there at 8. Pleasantly crowded, mostly families with young children. The table was sticky when we sat down. Our waitress was pleasant, attentive and helpful. Yea, you get to cook your own pancakes. Oh boy. The batters and ingredients are all fairly expensive. $3 for a few blueberries seems steep. The real problem, both the whole grain (vegan) and buttermilk pancake batters were awful; they tasted like store bought mixes and were too salty. Long after we left we still had a bad aftertaste in our mouths.

I dont actually like pancakes, but I love this restaurant. Its just cool and fun. Plus theres other delicious stuff on the menu. I love the design of slappy cakes. Its really well thought out, attractive, fun, and comfortable inside. Each table has a built in griddle, so guests can make their own pancakes from a variety of available batters at their seats. If you dont feel like cooking, theyll make the pancakes for you and bring them out, but its fun to make creative (x-rated!) edible designs yourself if youre feeling it. As I previously mentioned, Im not a big fan of pancakes, but I do like everything else on the menu, including the delicious breakfast cocktails! Service is good, prices are solid. This is a unique breakfast spot, and a place I love to take out-of-town guests.

Lets just put this up front: I am not a Portland Line connoisseur. I dont like to wait for restaurants. So I like coming here on weekday late mornings. Only then, can I say this place is enjoyable to eat at. If you dont mind 30-60 minute waits, by all means, come here on Weekend mornings. I come here for my kids. I would almost certainly never come here alone or with adults. The pancakes are pancakes, it would take far less time for me to whip up my own batch and eat, then drive out here and pay $30+ for my family to eat. But I guess the experience is what we pay for. It is kinda fun to watch other people come up with their own creations. This is the kind of place I go to 1x a year, and never really leave without feeling like "why did I bother?"
