I discovered the Fulton Pub on SW Nebraska Ave in late, late June 1989 as I was biking from Milwaukie to downtown Portland to check out Kells. I like biking over the I-5 via SW Corbett. Climbing that hill makes downtown Portland so worth it. And all the craft brew awaiting one after a climb northwardly on Corbett, over the mighty and powerful I-5, and into lovely Portland, in 1989. (Not the same in 2014 anymore.) Anyhoo, this is about the Fulton Pub at 618 SW Nebraska Avenue in Johns Landing (so haute, now, huh?). What happened to Captain Neons Fermentation Chamber, where the beer (I say ale) is Alive? The Fulton is my all-time fave pub, anywhere. I discovered this place and my fathers then live in gal-pal knew of it. So, wed go together, sometimes. Nebraska Bitter is an ale unique to the Fulton after it was opened as a McMenamin Brothers brew pub. The interior artwork was all phantasmagoria and dreamy, with stars and moons and such over a dark cobalt blue ceiling and walls. In the 21 century-era, it appears gentrified. Sort of like how the McMenamin Brothers ales are now. We could say value engineered. The Hammerhead and Ruby Ales, both McMenamin Brother stalwart ale offerings are (were?) so good, yet way better in the past, before all the recipes changed (for the cheaper? - like what Sierra Nevada did to all their ales since like the late, late 1990s?) Id have all three: the Nebraska Bitter, Hammerhead, and Ruby. Usually the Hammerhead or Nebraska Bitter with a menu offering. If I recall correctly, the Captain Neon Burger (blue cheese?) and (Kens) Communication Breakdown Burger (your cheese choice) were created by the then chef named Ken. I settled on Kens Communication breakdown Burger each time. Tater tots. Why McMenamin Brothers rule. Tater Tots. How peaceful and kind and dear: tater tots. They play music over the PA from Spotify or Pandora or the radio (KBOO when they play music?), I guess. There is telly that airs sports and stuff in the 21st-century era of the Fulton. In the mens bathroom you can read the comics while standing up. Maybe the horoscope page, too? The garden patio is a treat as it is well overgrown with lush fragrant flowering plants of all sorts. A respite from the big city Portland grind. (How much of a grind can Portland be with those land values and housing prices?) The burgers, though, have changed. Not so big and juicy and flavorful as then. Even the not so flavorful of the past seems more flavorful than the most flavorful now. Includes the ales, I guess. Please forgive me. Im a little too emotional to five a better review, here. This more my personal context and subtext comprising my Fulton Pub experience. I may come back and clean this up. Cheers. Your humble technical writer. Disallowed from living freely and privately in the Portland area. No mkultra stuffed up the cointelpro, civilian perpetrator. Ha.

Don’t get me wrong, I love McMenamin’s. I do. But the experience I had here has made me never come back to the Fulton Pub… I used to go here for lunch fairly often, good food, like the surroundings, the people and good prices. But I ordered a simple hummus plate… a cold, simple hummus plate and 45 minutes later I was still waiting for it. The place wasn’t busy, maybe 2 other tables, a total of 6 people… More than one waitress on duty… How did this happen? I don’t know. But the server wasn’t absent, she was sitting at the bar chatting and laughing with the bartender… I asked numerous times (I only have an hour lunch)… and was given nothing but, “its on its way…” and “I’ll go check…” After repeated inquiries, patience and tedious waiting… and watching the server laugh away on a stool with the bartender I had enough. When she finally brought it out, I was fuming… I demanded to have it to go… and she gave me a “whatever…” look and began to saunter off to the kitchen. I told her to bring me the box, leave the plate I will do it myself, I didn’t need them taking another 30 minutes in the kitchen with it. Did I leave a tip? No, and I honestly felt bad about that. My friends have been and are servers. But I’m not going to pay for zero service, or worse, terrible service. Yeah, like a lame-o I wrote a long note on the back of their copy of the receipt for them. Did they care? Probably not. But its not like they cared in the first place. Haven’t been back and I plan to keep it that way.

Fulton Pub is my go to place when I want to get away and enjoy a quiet Happy Hour. When I need to decompress from life for a few hours and go some place where I can count on good beer, good food and quiet I go to Fulton at 3pm. Thats when Happy Hour starts! The people are super friendly and provide great service, but they also give you a bit of space. The space is very small too, so if you need something it is easy to get someones attention. The parking is street parking, but at 3pm parking isnt hard to find. This is also the place I suggest to friends who live on the Westside, and want to meet up for Happy Hour. It is pretty easy to get into and out of, and a great place to catch up with that friend you havent seen in a year. Youll be able to hear each other and since its McMenamins youll know the food and beer will be dependable. I have never been here for anything other than their happy hour specials, and Ive always eaten inside.

Located in the Johns Landing neighborhood in SW Portland off Macadam Ave, Fulton holds a special place in my heart as a frequent haunt and meeting place. Tiny (I mean tiny) working mans bar with maybe 8-10 tables and booths combined, but walk through the back of the bar and past the kitchen which leads to a huge outdoor beer garden were the brewery is located, as well as additional seating and a fire pit for those cold Portland nights. Fulton has the standard McMenamins food that you can find anywhere and the usual flagship beers such as Hammerhead, Terminator Stout, and Ruby Ale, but the gem is my favorite the Nebraska Bitter (created and first brewed at the Fulton and is named after the street its located on). Come by during Happy Hour (3-6, and 10-close) for $2-4 food (those Cajun tots are like crack!) and $3.75 pints as well as limited beer tasting events every Thursday.

Though conveniently located, my colleagues and I received very unfortunate customer service at McMenamins Fulton Pub & Brewery. Four of our five orders were incorrect (no onions, vegetarian, cosmopolitan) and once we brought this to our server’s attention, Carole was essentially unapologetic and did not offer to correct our orders. To add insult to injury, when Carole brought us our bills, which were divided (per our company policy), she opted to comp one person’s order, but charged the rest of us full price, with no acknowledgment that THREE of us received incorrect orders. The entire experience left a bad taste in our mouths, quite literally, and next time we will go to Buffalo Gap, Mccormick & Schmicks, or Aquariva, which are also in the neighborhood.

Swooped in for a light lunch for a break from O.H.S.U. Hospital. My father is in for a triple bypass so needed a little break after he finished his surgery. Since it takes a few hours for him to wake up the Doctor suggested to take a quick lunch. Was just a perfect sunny day to sit out on the pavilion out back surrounded by trees and overgrowth. Had their Orange Hef and a medium rare baken cheeseburger with spicy tater tots. Server was exceptional and the food was delicious! Was only a 8 minute drive back to the Hospital. A well deserved break will be telling all my friends about this place! It was a definitely a treat.
