After long being absent, I decided I needed to contribute again to my fellow Yelpers b/c of this amazing place! This review is LONG overdue as Ive had the pleasure of having tried this food twice at catered holiday events. I finally made my way to this quaint and cozy restaurant for a gathering last night and a very happy belated Diwali celebration with great friends. Now, after being a native of Union County for over 20 years, I cannot believe that Ive never made it to this place more often. This place has authentic North Indian food and some of the most flavorful and savory dishes Ive ever had. I normally hate daal makhani, but this place made me a convert. The place is also BYOB and if you forget to bring your own liquor, theres a place right across the street. Great for dates too. The chicken tikka is very succulent, unlike any Ive had before. The pineapple paneer appetizer is great as well...Simply put, I dont think you can go wrong with any of the dishes here. This place is a definate destination spot and I cant rave enough about it. This place has a separate area downstairs where you can have a large group of people as well. Great overall from every aspect! Love this place!

If you are looking for some intense stomach pain and temporary chronic dysfunctional bowel syndrome then this place is absolutely perfect for you. Go ahead for some chicken tikka masala, which will provide you with the freshest kind of diarrhea. Oh! you can also try the dal fry which is always very undercooked and tastes like it was older than the moghul times; dont forget this dish can also give you stones in your gallbladder. Last but not the least, if you looking for some extreme degree of swollen belly and vomiting then look no further and try the Chicken Hyderabadi because if wont disappoint you. Please come to this restaurant if you want to skip work and sit on the thunderbucket for hours at home and realize that eating at this horrendous restaurant was a huge mistake.

Being Indians it was a treat to find a good Indian restaurant in one of the most unlikely of places -Maplewood. Have been to the place a few times and have always returned satisfied. The ambiance is great both inside and outside. The food is the most remarkable aspect because it really tastes good. The buffet for lunch is worth every penny and very reasonably priced at that. The menu has a choice of items. Its a treat for both vegetarians (my wife is one) and non-vegetarians as well. The service is warm and friendly. I had the chance of taking my friends here too and have always heard positive comments from them. Great Indian food, good people and good ambiance, I guess is what describes Sona in a nutshell.

I called for delivery of food, I have been a customer for the last 6 months and I cannot believe that the man who attended to the phone took the order and said it will take 3 hours for delivery as they are busy, and said they deliver only for 4 miles, I never had problem prior to this, cannot understand why they cannot service a 7.5 miles area, this is poor customer service, and does not speak well of the restaurant policy. As a consumer I feel its insulting and the guy had complete lack of professionalism. The town should look into this as we do not want business in Maple wood that I not consumer friendly and they do not have the information on their website regarding delivery.

Ive been eating Indian Food all my life and was looking foward to trying Sono based on these reviews. But they must have gone downhill since the last ones because the food was horrible....the tandoori shrimp app was cooked well but had no flavor ..followed by two main courses that were lackluster as well and had barley any food in them ,,,,the main courses came in large bowls that looked like soup and had little falvor and small amounts of shrimp or meat ....it felt like they opened up a can of sauce and dumped some meat into it ,,,instead of a hearty sauce that has beem cooked down nice and thick and flavorfull ...its a real nice location but the food was below par

Have to agree with the review titled "very disappointed". Food came in soup bowls with hardly any food. I am sorry, if you call this Indian food then Taco Bell is authentic Mexican. We ordered Paneer Makhani. Bharva Baigan and Chicken Tikka. Strangely all three dishes looked like they have been prepared with the same sauce base and had paneer, egg plant and chicken thrown into it. Absolutely no flavor. Service was ok... had no expectations and dont care for much. Prices were pretty steep for such bad food. WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND unless you want to eat there and have an illusion of eating Indian.

This restaurant serves excellent Indian food every time I go there. It surpasses all of the Indian restaurants Ive eaten at in New York. The food is creative and delicious. Be it chicken tikka masala or baigan bartha (eggplant), the chef knows how to deliver mouthwatering flavor and texture. One of my favorite dishes is lamb with apricots -- definitely try it if you go. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They always take good care of us. Bring a bottle of wine and someone special and enjoy!

I understand the older negative reviews because its predecessor (Sona) was mediocre at best, but since it became Tandoori Chef 2, it has been excellent. Consistently good and the owner is an extremely nice and hard working man. To the fellow with the diarrhea, I have had this food 100 times (once a week for the last few years) and have NEVER had any issue. I suggest you start washing your hands after you use the bathroom and maybe wash your mouth out while you are at it.

The worst food we ever had here. We ordered veg biryani and chicken65. They gave us some kind of left over mixed rice with freezer vegetables filled with lot of colors and spices to it.its taste so bitter. And they didnt gave raitha for biryani at all. the chicken 65 is very hard to eat and added lot of color. we could not eat at all.. ..we are very angry for the quality of the food..We will not come here again.Food is not worth for the money what we are paying here..

I was never a big fan of Sona, found the food to be too bland for my taste. However, when i found out that its now been taken over by Tandoori chef, I decided to give it another try, and I was not disappointed. Excellent food and the icing on the cake is they deliver to your place :). My personal recommendation would be to try the tandoori chicken, its the best I have had in NJ.
