Clean open space with modern decor; unfortunately the food quality is well below the asking price. My Yakitori appeared to have been prepared on a flat top, lacking the characteristic char and smokiness required of the name. My rolls were drowned in condiments and any cooked protein contained within lacked textural balance due to similar cooking techniques; in most cases, the rice was the firmest ingredient on offer. Informed upon ordering that they lacked sufficient stock on Toro to serve sashimi, I was talked into an $18 fatty tuna "special" which was little more than Toro scraps minced and rolled, alongside a red chilli soy sauce which did little to lift the spirits of the sad, aged finfish. The service was pleasant and the restaurant itself was comfortable, however I cannot recommend Sushi Yama to anyone seeking anything approximating a proper Japanese dining experience.

if you want personal attention. I love sushi and have eaten at all the Baton Rouge spots, from Tsunami to Hello Sushi to Komo. But ever since this place opened, its become the one I visit regularly. The people here will know your favorites by your second visit, and they are always quietly observing to see what you enjoy. After a few visits, if they have something particularly nice that they think you will like, the chef might add a piece to your meal gratis. The cooked dishes are tasty as well, and the pickled cucumber salad with wakame is delightful. Note to the Pennington and OLOL folks: the lunch service here is extremely efficient -- if you tell them how much time you have, they will make sure you are full and happy and still get you out the door on time. As for phone orders, when you are told, "it will be ready in 10 minutes," they arent kidding.

Im updating my my review from 4 years ago and I have to say that Sushi Yama only got better. This is hands down the best Sushi around for miles...many miles. I go out of town quite often and when I do I like to frequent the best local sushi establishments depending on where I am. Each time I do I realize that it just cant be done as good as Sushi Yama. Food is great, fish is fresh, creative dishes are there for those in need and the staff is super friendly. And my review below still sticks. Go there and eat! Old review(4 years ago) No fancy schmancy hip stuff happening here. A good ole neighborhood family sushi restaurant. Great sushi, great atmoshpere, and the staff is really nice.

Very VERY overrated. I heard it was the best sushi restaurant in Baton Rouge but definitely tested better all around. The rolls were plain and food was nothing special. We ordered at least 7 rolls from the menu. Had a lobster roll and we didnt even taste the lobster in the roll. The food were VERY over priced; many was two times more expensive than Ive eaten anywhere else, and taste nothing special. Not a horrible restaurant but definitely not counted in the best 3. The restaurant interior itself might have been great if you cant see everyone eating right beside you. It was a open space environment and quite cramped. Eaten all over BR and definitely nowhere near amazing.

The sushi was ok, but the service was sub-par. Before we ordered, I asked the server if they use spicy mayo on the crunchy roll, because I cannot eat mayo. She said that specific roll doesnt come with it. When they brought our food out, the spicy mayo from my girlfriends roll was on 4 or my rolls. When I brought this to the attention of the server, and asked if she could replace them, she said their was nothing she could do. So I had to leave 4 rolls, which i payed for, on the plate. Because of this type of service, I do not recommend this restaurant.

I do hope the owner sees this. I heard that this place was one of the best in town,so I had to try it. I will say Im a foodie and try new places anytime Im out of town. I was curious about the snowcrab in containers. Was it real? Was it made with mayo? The avacado and cream cheese were a bit warm, that did disappoint me. Didnt taste the smoke of salmon. The staff did great, and the environment was on par. The sushi wasnt bad, it was okay. All in all ,it was a great visit. Hope to come back and have it taste a bit better. I gave it 3 stars.

A small restaurant with zero ambiance selling sake and sushi at upscale, downtown prices. I have no issues paying double or triple the price of other locations for the same exact drinks and sushi but not in a basic to-go type restaurant. When there are a dozen Japanese places within a five mile radius, you either have to be competitive with prices, have a beautiful restaurant with an upscale vibe, or bring something different to the table to warrant such a price point. Sadly, they just couldnt do that.

Ive traveled, Ive had sushi all over the States. Ive been coming to Sushi Yama for years now and I dont say this lightly: this is by far my favorite sushi restaurant on Baton Rouge or any other of the 10 states I have lived in and explored. Zune, or "Eagle Eye" as I like to call him, Oi, the owner... Every. Single. Sushi chef.. Simply amazing, very good attitudes. Ask for Katie and/or Alexis for your server, always happy and enhance your experience.

The service here is definitely solid, but other than that, this place is really nothing special. If you think Sushi Yama has the best sushi in BR then you must have never gone downtown to Tsunami. At Tsunami, the $ is similar to Sushi Yama, but the quality is far better and you have the option to actually buy drinks. Also, looks-wise, the inside and surrounding view at Tsunami is leaps and bounds ahead of Sushi Yama. Trust me!

Went with a girlfriend, we asked our waitress Kelsey what she would recommend. She suggested, Fuji Mountain Roll and Sexy Roll. We devoured them both, I really liked the sweet after taste from the sauce also the mountain of stuff on top of the rolls and she liked the spice of the sexy roll and the bit of cucumber. Next time in town , I will definitely try another 1 or 2 different ones.

Aug. 21, 2013. Not just a dinner, an experience. A perfect atmosphere, friendly staff and incredible sushi make this place a must for the next time I visit Baton Rouge. There are so many good things on that menu. Holy crap, it was awesome! I tipped the dudes making the sushi twice as much as I did my waitress and she got 20%. Literally the best food in Baton Rouge.

I had a server was really bad. She never let us finish when we was trying to order. When l told her 2 orders, and she just walked away without asking us anything like "thats it for now" or something. The attitude was really bad, she never asked us for anything, we just have to get help for ourselves. Still got her some tips, but very awful server.

The sushi was ok, but the server is bad. She walked away before we finished order, and we called her back, when we said one more order, she walked away again, and we still not finished. She not even asked if Im done order or something. Still gave her tip, but do not recommend.
