It is a pleasure to see once abandoned and neglected spaces downtown rise phoenix-like into glory. Okay, that may be a little much but its not far from the truth. As part of the rehabilitation of the Commerce Building, Magpie Cafe Downtown has taken on old, long abandoned department store on street level and changed it into an open, bright (but not TOO bright), welcoming space. In that space they serve breakfast and lunch from an ever-changing menu based on whats in season (for the most part), an array of baked goods, coffee and espresso drinks, teas, and - interestingly - beer, wine, and craft cocktails. My only quibble is this, I like lemon in my water. The attentive wait staff bring a small glass and a carafe of water with lemon on a side plate. I squeeze the lemon into the carafe and . . . no napkin, anywhere. It seems a napkin is only in evidence when ordering something on a plate from the menu. Its a small thing but I really dont like having to wipe my fingers on my pants or get up to go to the restroom to wipe my hands on a towel. Its easy to fix and I hope they do. Otherwise, everything Ive had to eat and drink from Magpie Cafe Downtown has been quite tasty!

Cool little place, very busy to be off the beaten path. Not being from the area I wasnt to sure what university its near but there was tons of student traffic and a consistent line at the counter. They serve local, organic sandwiches, salads. Juices, coffee, tea and cookies just to name a few. They offer different daily breakfast and lunch specials that appear to consist of a soup, salad and sandwich..all of which are made with fresh, local ingredients. Magpie offers both indoor and outdoor seating as well as free wifi. Their pumpkin latte was the best ive had..puts Starbucks and dunkin donuts to shame. The white bean salad and chicken pannini were tasty as well. Must try the hibiscus iced tea (cold)..yummy. All I can say is those ladies were working hard but still had smiles on their faces..I love that. Stop in, say hello and grab a coffee!

The first time I visited Magpie Cafe, I was very plesently surprised. The atmosphere is great and the shop itself is very quaint. Staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgable about the menu and was able to offer up the best suggestion for my first visit which ended up being a macchiato. I throughly enjoyed my drink and the taste of the fresh ground coffee whilst sitting on their outdoor patio during sunset. I encourage all LSU Campus locals to try out this great spot for amazing coffee and a friendly and inviting atmosphere. As a side note, anyone that complains about: 1. The quality of the coffee doesnt understand what good coffee tastes like, so I recommend sticking to Starbucks or CCs. 2. The price has obviously forgotten that this is a locally-owned, mom and pop joint.

Quaint little cafe. The indoor area is cozy and trendy, even offering items and art to take home with you. The outdoor is nice and simple, but it is against the road so the car noises take away from the experience. I noticed inappropriate wiring connections while outside. The avocado and pesto, brioche and garlic confit, ricotta, and creole tomato on a toast was light and delicious. The salmon panini was also tasty and light, however, the onion overpowered the salmon taste. The Roosevelt was good and only slightly sweet. The Winston was phenomenal, it was a 3 layered double espresso shot with half and half and vanilla syrup.

My favorite coffee shop in Baton Rouge. If youre a coffee fan definitely try The Roosevelt. Its strong, delicious, and very aromatic. If youre more of a latte person, the honey vanilla latte is one not to miss. They have a selection of teas too but none are organic, though Im hoping theyll change that soon. Magpie is in a cute little old house with a quaint little garden in the front with tables that are perfect for sipping cappuccinos with a friend on a Saturday morning or desks inside that double as a bright and cheery second office on a Tuesday afternoon. If youre a local and havent been here yet, youre missing out.

Please bring back dancing goat or a facsimile. I was a walking ad for yall when that was your house espresso. It tasted italian, the real deal. Good tart pucker at the finish (something I look for in a good espresso). Today, however, I tried your house blend espresso, the first sip was exciting, but I couldnt finish it. It had tart and sweetness from beginning to finish. After 3 sips I felt like i was drinking spaghetti sauce. Had to return it, for a french press (tasted like the same bean blend :-[. )

Im not super into paleo or organic food, and i dont consider myself super trendy either, but i love good food! My boyfriend is a big latte diva and refuses to get one from anywhere other than Magpie! We try to make lunch dates there as often as possible. The food NEVER disappoints! I had a bacon and brie panini the other day, and ive been trying to recreate that at home since. Food is great, nice atmosphere, and cant deny that the coffee is amazing.

Best espresso in town that Ive had. Latte e Miele is a close second. Served properly in demi-tasse (tiny cup) with a saucer, like L.eM. Full of flavor, great tartness/acidity. Cant help but smile upon my first sip. Havent tried anything else there, but considering their respect for espresso done right, I bet theyre excellent with other things as well. WISH IT WAS OPEN AT 6!

Great coffee brewed from Portland beans! Theyre true to their word with organic, local, and seasonal food daily. Also I recommend the green juices- freshly juiced fruit and veg are the ultimate health food energy drink! The owners and staff have a trendy, laid back vibe. Dont let it fool you though- theyre all very knowledgeable and passionate about what they do.

Hands down my favorite coffee spot Ive been to in ANY city. The coffee makes you feel like you arent in Baton Rouge because its amazing but the service is as friendly as youd expect from the south. Really cant say enough about this place. Everything Ive tried is good But if you like iced drinks try the Roosevelt and thank me later.

This is my go-to place for a late lunch and quiet place to work. The lighting is nice since its not directly over the tables and highlights local art displayed on the wall. The Mercato salad is always a tasty choice, with mixed greens, cucumber, tomato, purple onion, sunflower seeds and a yummy, home-made balsamic vinaigrette.

Very neat atmosphere close to LSU campus. The café only serves drinks in one size, which I found refreshing, because there will be no people in front of you in line with crazy Starbucks style ordering. They have lot of gluten free and paleo snack options, plus great food and neat local art/crafts for sale.

Stopped in for dinner and drinks. The menu is pretty limited, but the avocado stuffed with shrimp appetizer is super tasty and the pizza is solid. For dinner, it was brightly lit and felt very much like a coffee shop. I would come back, but probably stick to coffee and pastry for brunch.

A larger and more varied lunch selection would be a great improvement; they often sell out of their limited menu items, especially the vegetarian ones. Decent tea. Nice atmosphere. Small outdoor seating area is comfortable in fair weather despite being right by the road due to plantings.
