I would rate this place as a 3.5. I pre-ordered a small Extreme Chocolate cake, which had great presentation, and had everybody in my office ooh-ing and ahh-ing over it. Once we cut into the cake and ate it though, I was disappointed. I thought that the cake was somewhat dry and I didnt like the spongy texture that much (although I usually do like sponge cakes), and I didnt care for the chocolate buttercream. I guess other people didnt think it was that bad though... I would give this cake a 2. Maybe I should have gone for the Belgian dark chocolate cake instead. I tried the Speculoos macaron here, and it was delicious! Maybe the best macaron that Ive had here in Chicago-- and you dont really hear that many people talking about the macarons from Hendrickx. I also ordered the goat cheese, honey, pistachio sandwich from here and it was also phenomenal. I was so hungry I wanted to eat the sandwich in the Uber on the way to my next stop, but the Uber driver wouldnt let me. I was so determined to eat my sandwich, that I asked the cab driver on my next ride if I could eat in my car, and he obliged! My plans of eating carefully and not spilling were dashed when I looked down and discovered I had bread in my hair and crumbs all over my coat, because I was scarfing this sandwich down so quickly. There wasnt much crust, but somehow I still made a mess. HUGE ass pieces of THICK bread were slathering with the goat cheese, EVOO and thyme.... so delicious. I was full for the rest of the day though.... I have to go back and try their croissants! Oh, and I had the chocolate eclair too--- delicious! I love seeing specks of vanilla bean in the filling... ahh happiness.

Artisan bread crafters hard at work! To be completely fair, they do more than bread here. It’s a bake shop that churns out some super tasty treats. I’ll have to come back for lunch some time. The white chocolate bread is like nothing I’ve had before. Definitely worth a try. I heart old world traditions and this place delivers on the perfection of the bread making craft. I was lucky enough to spend a few minutes in the kitchen to watch chef working and it’s clear that there are no shortcuts in making a quality product. I love it.

Hidden gem for sure, Hendrickx has the best smells (and baked goods!) around. Their chocolate croissants are heavenly and will cause you to dream about returning for weeks; breads baked fresh; and clientele is a steady stream (especially on weekends). Im also looking forward to stopping by to try their soup & sandwich special some night after work. That said, agree with other reviews - only three tables, so either stop by for take out or plan on a table only if youre feeling lucky.

The croissants are delicately crusty on the outside with a wonderfully soft & stretchy inside. Well crafted, indeed. The quick counter service with a reasonable number of options still makes choosing between chocolate croissant or almond chocolate croissant a tough one. Fortunately, good enough for return visits to work through the list of all their pastry offerings.

I am in love with Hendrickx. What a charming little bakery nestled in a quiet corner in Gold Coast. I have stopped in for the flourless chocolate cake, macarons, fresh breads, and quiches! Such a nice and different lunch option when in the area. The people working there are so charming, too. Love this hidden gem!

Hot and cramped. Waffles diappointing. Tea served in plastic cup. Chewy and oily almond croissant. In my humble opinion grossly overrated - Paris and Vienna offer much more satisfying bakeries. Would not come back for an overpriced (even for Chicago) breakfast. (My neighbour did not finish his waffles either...)

This awesome Belgian pastry hidden in Gold Coast is worth checking out. Soft and fresh croissants filled chocolate or almond butter or orange flavor. They have small tables indoor if want to hang out. They offer coffee and breakfast menu. Including some more pastries which I will have to go back to try!

First visit to Chicago last week and my husband and I came across Hendrickx. What a wonderful find. My mother is from Belgium and this place is like being back there. We wished we lived there so Hendrickx could be a daily experience. If you havent been there, youre missing out!

Great bakery hidden on walton behind some construction. Great service and lots of variety - all kinds of croissants and bread, sandwiches, salads, coffee. Very cute place. A little pricey but worth it, still a good deal for a fresh breakfast off Michigan Ave

This place only has three tables, as most of their business is takeout, but its still a great place to read the paper or sip some coffee. The ovens are within sight of the front counter, and the bread often hasnt even cooled before you get it. Great stuff.

The Citrus Chaud was amazing!! Its unsweetened, but they give you a little pitcher of syrup to sweeten it (I added even more from the little packets). The croissant was airy and VERY tasty. The dark chocolate muffin was very thick, almost cookie like.

I brave the tourists at least once a month for this place. this is a true bread artist; using fine European flours. Im happy to see the place still doing so well and becoming more popular even though Im losing my little place that no one knows about!

Delicious. The curried chicken mayo sandwich will fill you up for the day and the terrific price will mean you have enough dosh left for a pastry. The coffee is also excellent. The outdoor seating goes quickly so arrive early and stake your claim.

Our favorite bakery in town. We love to sit down for the best soup and bread. Belgium waffles and crepes are offered over the weekend and you should not be skipping raspberry jam ones. Little piece of Europe in Chicago.

Nice tiny space with some urban outdoor tables in front. Almond croissant was pretty good, not too sweet at all. Waffle though was fluffy American style... not the thick, yeasted Belgian style you might be hoping for.

Great bakery just off of the Mag Mile. They are a little pricey but worth it, the staff is super friendly and helpful. They have country bread which is supremely good. I havent had anything bad here.

Like the FoodGloriousFood of Pittsburgh, this is the hidden peak of bakery in Chicago. I constantly go back for bread, croissant, seasonal cakes, and, at this time of the year, hot chocolate.

A hidden gem of a cafe! You have to try the almond muffins (not too sweet, but moist and flavorful) and the macaroons! They pair perfectly with a cafe au lait. The bread is to die for!

Fantastic Belgian Bakery. The croissants are absolutely great. The bakers are also extremely nice. One of them came out and talked to us about baking bread. A very nice find.

This is a unique little bakery we enjoyed on a previous trip to Chicago, and made a point to have breakfast on this trip. Great croissants, nice quiche and good coffee.

Amazing place. Absolutely brilliant pastries and belgian coffee. Be prepared that theres no accessibility access and belgian coffee is very strong (even with milk).

I popped in for a snack this afternoon and grabbed a chocolate croissant for now and a hunk of bread for later. Neither lasted very long as they were delicious!
