Have you ever had the California Roll from 7-11? Thats basically what our first Maki roll tasted like when I visited this establishment in mid-April of 2009. The Spicy Tuna roll (which for some reason wasnt featured on the menu) tasted like it had been drenched with Tabasco sauce and produced a type of hot that was completely unappealing. Our other two rolls, which cost over $15.00 each, had been doused in a strange mayo sauce. Good Japanese food lives and dies on the quality of the fish, which is what brings flavor to the dish. At Yao-Kiku, this nauseating sauce attempted to bring an American zest(?) to the rolls, instead disturbing our stomachs and appetites. Overall, the food and establishment reeked of cheapness, and I would highly discourage any patronage.

This is my neighborhood Japanese restaurant, and I eat here about once a month. Its a little on the expensive side (which is why I dont eat here more often), and the service is hit or miss even though there are only ~10 tables. But the foods great, the people are friendly, and they have a veggie dragon roll thats spectacular! When I feel like splurging a bit I enjoy a good meal here.

to the comment on "strange mayo sauce" americanized yes! hello...where are we? Nobody would eat sushi if they didnt have all these rolls....In Japan they dont have rolls lol just raw fish or tempura houses or noodle houses....so any japanese restaurant you go to is "americanized" silly....were in america go to japan. go eat a live red clam which is still moving in ur mouth.

Ive been very happy with the sushi at Yao-Kiku. The fish has always tasted fresh, as have other ingredients in the rolls. The service has always been friendly and quite adequate (though we have tended to visit at less-busy times). The decor is unassuming, but thats just fine by me; the food as why I go!

I knew we were off too a good start when the spicy roll I ordered was actually spicy! They put a lot of high quality fish in the rolls, delicious.
