What an awful experience. My husband and I originally chose the Alternative Baker to bake our wedding cake, despite some poor reviews we heard by mouth in the area of the owners temper. On our first meeting Essell was great. We got along well, he seemed like a cool guy, and we thought he knew what we wanted. Im lactose intolerant and my husband is allergic to soy so he was going to make us a vegan wedding cake. We drove out 2 hours for our first tasting (we currently live in MA), where we waited for an hour and a half for our cake tasting, making us late for another appointment, and also found out that he didnt even have the right ingredients for the cake. The result: a cake that fell apart, poorly presented, and was extremely bland. We called the baker to explain what had happened to the cake, which resulted in me pretty much telling him it wasnt his fault (which it was) because he started getting angry. My husband called him back at a later date to see if we could talk over the phone about the cake, and the reply we got was that he was busy and that he doesnt make outgoing phone calls so my husband would have to call him back. How do you run a business that way? So the baker told us that he would bake us a new cake and wouldnt charge us for this one (how nice of him). I had another appointment that day and Essell called me to see if I could come in early for our appointment, since it was his day off. I told him that I was at another appointment and didnt know what time Id be getting out but we might be able to make it a bit early. He told me he would be there working on something in the kitchen and just to come in the back when we got there. We also had our 10 month old nephew, and were running 20 minutes late. I could have called but I figured he was working on something else and not to bother him. We showed up and he started screaming at us, about how rude it was to be late to an appointment and that he had other things to do, and that we didnt know how hard it was to be a baker. Im sorry didnt you make us wait and HOUR AND A HALF for our first appointment? After about 5-7 minutes of him screaming at us (while my fiance at the time was holding our 10 month old nephew) we basically left and told him to have a good life. We ended up getting Deisings Bakery in Kingston to do our cake and although it wasnt allergy free, it was the best damn cake we could have had. I will NEVER go back to the Alternative baker. If you expect to run a business that way you will never get my business.

I went here today to find a tasty treat with my mother, my daughter, and 2 of my friends. I was greeted at the door by a long haired little dog. A dog in a food establishment??!! OK move on to the owner who ignored my handicapped mother and then when he finally answered it was a barked response. When she sat down he asked if she wanted what she was inquiring about but after being yelled at she declined. He then said to himself...fine, sit and pout then. Very adult of you. We all heard him and my mother got up to leave as to not fuel the fire. When he saw that he asked my friend if he wanted his food to go and he responded yes and he muttered thank god. I then got up and was in the process to leave and told him he was rude. He walked around the counter to ask me who the f#!k I thought I was talking to him like that. He called me a c&^t....the dirtiest word there is and continued saying mean and rude and tasteless things. Never have I ever been treated in such a manner at any business as a prospective customer. I cannot understand why anyone would go here. It was dirty and had animals inside on top of the miserable old grouch who owns it. The food was out unwrapped on the counter as well. He has to be breaking health code requirements. Ill be calling them and the Better Business Bureau on Monday. Buyer beware! ! He also put his hands on my friend to try to grab his money from him before he left because after that treatment he was not going to patronize this place. That is not acceptable EVER!!

The other day, my wife brought home a Devils food cake with dark chocolate ganache from this bakery for the first time. When she told me that she paid $22 for a 7" wide round cake, I flipped. Then, she put a piece on a plate and warmed it on defrost in the micro for 15secs as she said the baker mentioned that she should let the chilled cake sit at room temp for an hour or so, Let me tell you, that cake is well worth the price of admission because it is AMAZING. It also gave more servings than I thought. I guess because its 3-layers high. This cake has more than one tyoe of chocolate flavor and more than one texture. It actually makes me wish I was a poet so I could be more eloquent about it..I am just now eating the next to the last piece and plotting how to get to Rosendale before its all gone.

Parents, might want to leave your children in the street if they are likely to make any noise: my overtired 5 year old melted down (over the size of her half-cookie...) at this bakery yesterday. It was admittedly very unpleasant and I would have swept her out immediately but was waiting for the baker to tally our bill. Instead he chose to lecture both of us and hollar at her, prolonging the agony significantly and scaring her, and then inform me he thinks children should be snuffed out at birth. I think he realized he overstepped because he sort of apologized as we finally were leaving, and then proceeded to help us out with my toddlers stroller (3 steps). An unfortunate end to a delicious lunch.

Rude... To the extream. I love to support a local biz, but this guy was so rude that i left hungry without trying anything, and i was hungry! Turns out i was not the only one with this experice. Two of my friends said they would never go back! Should be renamed alterative to nice bakery.

Horribe, scary owner. Do NOT go in this place. I mistook an open bag of something for samples, and he screamed at the top of his lungs at me and used every cuss word in the books. He is scary. I felt very unsafe and he was still screaming as I left.

The pastries and bread are great, but dont expect todays bread before 11 or 12 noon. The owner has chosen a more laid-back approach, and thats his prerogative. For me, better to wait for great bread than have none at all!

I have never experienced such rude customer service in my life! The owner doesnt do himself any favors with his poor attitude. Its a shame, too, cause the food is delicious. But, I wont be going back.
