Il Buco, why do you hate me so? The service during our Friday night dinner was putrid at best, bordering on offensive at its worst. The food was good, at some points fine, at some points very good. It wasnt great and its far from it. Nonetheless all of this could have been forgiven and our evening saved if not for how we were treated by this establishments staff. I held on strong but in the end it took a little over an hour for them to break me. The rancid service had left me with no choice but to lift my hands, look to the sky and ask "why me?". Thank you for the table cornered by the door (we all loved the nice 20 degree breezes we were treated to every time someone opened the door) tucked right next to the crowded bar (no lady my head is not where you are meant to place your jacket and bag). Why does such a table even exist? Riddle me that. Thank you for bringing our (second) bottle of wine to our table without any glasses (should we just sip and pass?). And lastly, as we had finally almost made our escape, thank you for asking not once, not twice, but three times if we were interested in dessert (Hint: NO!) before finally presenting us with our check, which Ill add had to be hand delivered to the hostess 45 minutes later after our server went missing (notify proper authorities if found). Il Buco, why do you hate me so? Im not mad at you Il Buco. Im just disappointed. I wanted to love you. With just a little bit of good service and elbow grease you probably could have even tricked me into thinking your food was unique or better than any of the countless other trendy pasta hotspots our great city has to offer. I wanted to believe. You had me, you really did. I wont be recommending you to a friend. I wont be returning in this lifetime or the next. Another member of our party wrote a more eloquently worded email to management but judging from our experience, I assume shell need to send it at least two more times before you get the message.

If you DONT know fine dining, then Il Buco is for you. From Bianca whom I confirmed my reservation with to Natasha the manager on duty on the evening of April 20, 2013, they all (Il Buco staff) need training on how to serve a good meal and how tend a table with customers. I I felt completely unwelcomed by the staff. I was told, more than once that my table was reserved right after me and I needed to end my meal by a certain time --AND I HAD MADE A RESERVATION A MONTH IN ADVANCE! Who does that? I love to eat. I enjoy the restaurant scene, not just in NYC, but in my travels through Europe (Italy and France several times included) as well as throughout the United States. I must say, I have never been treated the way I was treated at Il Buco. As for the food itself, The Bistecca was the only dish that lived up to the expectations. The burrata cheese appetizer tasted like it was a cheap mozzarella slice of cheese from the dairy aisle from a grocery store. I kept asking the staff to pour water in my glass. I mean, one thing after another went wrong. The service was just so out of touch with the reality of the food business industry. I will never set foot again at Il Buco. It was a wasted evening of $326.00. I do not recommend this place to anyone. There are plenty of other GREAT and REAL restaurants in Manhattan. I do not understand at all why Zagat guide gave Il Buco the ratings they did. I was very much disappointed!! --BTW, I was celebrating a special occasion that evening. So much for celebrating that was. NEVER AGAIN!

I travel a lot and find myself eating alone on many nights. I always seek new and exciting places that Ive either read about or have heard about, and have bars that I can sit at. On my last several trips to San Fran I ended up in the Mission district, where there are a number of great places to choose from (Farina, Beretta, Flour+Water, Trick Dog, etc). This time I wanted to stay in the North Beach/Financial district area and ended up at Cotogna. Its a fairly lively and compact space that feels good as soon as you walk in. They have two separate "bar" areas to sit at. On the right is the actual bar and on the left is where the wood fired stove and open grill are. The only stool left when I walked in was on the left.

The only thing wrong with II Buco is that my parents dont want to try anyplace else when they visit! My roommate LOVES the octopus appetizer and I had a shaved artichoke dish to start. The lobster mushroom pasta dish was out of this world and they have a fantastic wine selection. The menu is short and well-edited. The waiter was attentive and informative. He made some great suggestions. None of the tables are too close to the bathroom or kitchen. The truffle dishes are pricey ($100 for a pasta) but you know they are using natural ingredients and not that fake "truffle essence that is so bad for you. The vibe is rustic and reminded me of my favorite neighborhood spot in Fiesole, Italy.

Loved the decor here. It had been a few years since I had dined here. This time it was not the best. My steak and all of my side dishes were overcooked. When I sent my steak back the second one came back medium at best from a desire to have a medium rare steak. No great feat. The waiter that served my party of six seemed to be in some competition to be right all the time while stepping outside to answer his cell phone. Needless to say my guest, professional private chefs, were not amused. The best part of this meal were the overpriced cocktails that we should have had more of at the bar before we sat down. Maybe the dinner would have turned out much more to our liking.

UPDATE from my post of three years ago: STILL THE WORST culinary experience I have ever had! Amazed this place is still here, and with a 4.4 star rating no less! What are people thinking? Based on the hype, my wife and I decided to go here a few years ago, and to this day it is stuck in my mind as maybe the worst ever dining experience we have had, certainly among the top three worst for sure. Food was horrendous, staff set new standards in attitude, and the prices...I cant forget that olive oil menu, we still make jokes about it! It is a cute place as far as ambiance goes, thats all that recommends it.

Walked in for lunch with a party of 3 at 12:30 on a frigid Friday with no reservations. There were no separate tables available but sat with no problem at a long semi-communal table that separated sections with large flower pots. Food was delicious, sophisticated, prepared and presented with skill. Wine list was pricey but clever, and we found a nice Ligurian white. Service was attentive if a little quirky. Space is rustic and homey but in a high-style way. Grilled wahoo was a stand-out; burrata superb. I wasnt crazy about the kale salad but others in my party raved. Good place, bordering on great.
