FIRST: our server gets 5 stars but we will not give full rating for the meal. SECOND: I have to leave a star. THIRD: We eat regularly at the Gilroy and Tracy locations, both in California. We have NEVER been disappointed in a meal. I was so happy to have found a Black Bear on our route! Both our teens had burgers which are not too hard to screw up. Husband had the "on-special" Prime Rib Dip and I ordered the Grilled Atlantic Salmon dinner. Sadly, this was not to be a meal like our restaurants back home. Regretfully, I wish I wouldve taken pics but we were driving home from Idaho and had been on the road for close to 10hrs so far; we were tired and very hungry. My salmon: I ordered a salad and replaced the starch with green beans to go along with the already provided mixed veggies. Hubs: he had fries with his sandwich...basic. My salad was fresh, tasty. Thats where it ended. The fish was THE WORST Ive ever had...not exaggerating. It was grayish-pink inside, looked microwaved (what happened to grilled??) and I had to add salt to get it down. The mixed veggies looked like they came out of a bag from the dollar store. Green beans were from a can but served in a little cup with bacon and onions...decent. This meal was on a promo poster at the front of restaurant touting how "Atlantic" and "fresh" it was. NOT. PRICE: $14.99. Hubs sandwich: Prime Rib? HA HA HA HA HA! It appeared this is what they do with left over meat from the day before, which is totally not uncommon in the restaurant biz. Meats or fish from a day before are routinely used for tacos, sandwiches, salads and marked "specials". HOWEVER, the customer should not be able to realize this by appearance. The meat was not more than 1/4in thick and completely leatherized. His plate arrived and there was a giant fat piece hanging out of the roll. Thank God for that au jus or he wouldve needed dental work and a massage after eating. PRICE: $11.99. Again, we give the server 5 stars (and a 20% tip) because she was polite, friendly and its definitely not her fault the kitchen and QC in this location are horrible! I will also mention the manager walked by our table several times and not once smiled, said hello, or acknowledged anyone. Sad. Needless to say when were back out that way we wont be eating there again. Bummer.

We came in as total of 3 families. I ordered Black Bear burger and the other 2 guys ordered some kind of different burger. Waitress came up, placed a burger in front me, and gave burger to my brother-in-law. She told the 3rd guy that it will take a little bit longer to wait. I have never seen Black Bear burger, so obviously i started eating it. I was half way finished with my burger until waitress realized that the 3rd burger she was bringing out was supposed to be mine. She walks up to me with that 3rd burger and says "Why are you eating burger if you dont know how it looks". We were all shocked. Then she drops that burger in front me of and takes away the one i was eating...she didnt even want to ask if maybe i wanted to keep that one and took away my food while i was eating...really rude! and she started cleaning without even asking maybe i wanted to finish my fries? We had plate full of fries she just took off our table without asking. Then that entire time the 3rd guy was waiting for his burger she would walk up and tell him "If he didnt start eating your burger you would of been enjoying yours by now".....

Our waitress was VERY sweet and incredibly nice, food was amazing and decently priced, but the short brown haired with glasses hostess was the rudest Ive ever met. We stood waiting for almost 5 minutes, she just keept looking at us saying nothing. Finally I said "we just need a seat for two" and she huffed, said "one second" left, then came back and sharply said "follow me". She sat us down, asked what we want to drink and got our drinks. After that it went fine until we want to the front to pay. Almost the entire transaction she said nothing. After handing us our card back and receipt to sign, she said nothing yet again and just turned away. No "thank you" or anything. She really put a damper on such a great place. Not the greatest first experience, will not be going back to this one again.

Excellent service here at the Madras Black Bear Diner. I went by myself before hiking Smith Rock and there were plenty of customers there, yet it didnt feel overcrowded or extra loud. The service was fantastic. Sat, ordered and was given good within 10 minutes. The portions are great too. Large, but not obnoxious. I got an omelette. It was hefty and great tasting. The waiter was very nice. Checked on me throughout and made sure my water and coffee was full. There are not a lot of places to eat in Madras, so this will stick out if youre looking for breakfast. Its not spendy either. Reasonable, especially when considering the portion sizes.

The food wasnt bad. Nothing amazing, but it was good. I got the CPU try fried steak and enjoyed it. The eggs were a bit undercooked/slimy, though Im fairly picky with eggs. Were in a group of 7, and they handled the group ordering well, though they didnt seem pleased to serve us, and acting a bit odd when a couple people in the group requested milk for their coffee. I didnt think the prices were bad, I certainly got a lot of food for $10. All in all, not above and beyond amazing, but it was good and when looking for places to eat with someone Id bring up this Black Bear Diner as an option.

We went to eat at the black bear diner which is always a family favorite and I politely asked our waitress for a kids menu. She then snapped back very rudely if I might add " how old are you?" I then replied "14". She proceeds to tell me I cant order off the kids menu which bummed me out. She was a very rude waitress but I didnt have any other problems with the others. I hate that there is an age limit to kids menus. Its not a law so I believe I was treated wrongly. Overall great food just would have been a better experience with a kids meal item.

I came in on my way home from a 2day road trip, and needed some to-go food since my dog was in the car. After I decided $5 was too much for 4 pieces of bacon and had them cancel it, I got my coffee and a bisquit about half the size of any Ive ever seen come from a Black Bear diner. Basically the entire reason I stopped at Black Bear was to get a meals worth out of their giant bisquits. I was treated rudely once it was found out I wouldnt be staying for a sit down meal and ignored the entire time I was there.

It seemed like a nice restaurant with a friendly staff. However we visited the Black Bear Diner on the week of the eclipse. They restricted their menu to half of what it used to be and jacked up all of the prices. By the time our waitress brought us a cup of milk and an orange juice we realized that the milk was $3.99 and the orange juice was $5.99 . Im sure their food is good and that all of the staff is nice but to eat breakfast there it would have cost upwards of $40 for 2 people!
