This place should be closed down, their outlook on how to treat people borders on cruelty. Imagine the first thing you see on the door is that restrooms are for patrons only, are you serious? Then another sign saying if you sit down you need to order something... We went into this place only because we were really thirsty , when we went to pay the girl behind the counter said they only take cash, another joke... My GF walked to the cash machine and I waited there the girl behind the counter took our drinks back behind the counter, as if my GF were not going to come back and I were going to steal the teas that probably cost them a whole dollar, I should have left at this point. As I waited the place got a little crowded when my GF came back to pay there was a line , instead of the girl and the crabby old lady behind the counter taking care of her since she knew we had been waiting they didnt even look up. When my GF finally asked to pay the people on line were rude and so were the young girl and crabby old lady, the rudeness of the old lady was reflected by the customers, we wound up leaving without our drinks. So the money hungry mongering backfired on them, hopefully this place will not last much longer as they think they are being "high class" by imposing all these ridiculous, childish, third rate restrictions, this place has no class at all and honestly not a great selection. We found another place and had the exact opposite experience I wish I could remember the name of the place. I never write reviews so this had to be an exceptionally bad experience for me to do so.

This place was the only place open at the time I walked by. The first thing you notice when you walk in is a sign saying the restroom is only for patrons...nice. Next that the floors havent been washed since it opened. Finally, that the machines they use are archaic. The woman behind the register should have needed a motorcycle license to operate the exceptionally loud cash register. The tables were hard, cold school lunch tables. The back of the cafe was an empty, cavernous appendage analogous to a dead limb. The patrons were misty on the way to the grave. The iced chai I ordered was actually hit chai with melting ice on top. This place is a poor excuse for a cafe. Avoid at all costs.

Fantastic location in downtown Newburyport, they are open late and even have low-key live music some nights. Their pastries are great and their coffee drinks are alright. They are certainly not Baristas, but they do serve acceptable coffees and teas, but dont expect any classy microfoam on your cappuccino as they use a make-shift milk foaming apparatus or crema on your espresso. I do really enjoy the atmosphere and the ability to sit comfortably while holding a good conversation over coffee/tea. The service personnel can be grumpy at times, but dont shy away, interactions are mostly quick and efficient.

Im conflicted on this place. Their pastries are often wonderful but their drinks are extremely hit or miss. It is clear that the owners are not baristas as many of the drinks are from powders or are prepared incorrectly. With some rules that do nothing but drive people away I would not recommend it, however it is the only cafe in town that has seating that is open at night. I would love to see a breaking new grounds or other independent shop open in this space

Delicious crepes, salads and baked goods. As good a coffee as can be had anywhere. And on occasion the might have live entertainment. Commune had a good sized crowd on a cold Saturday night in January. A stroll around the corner showed that the Atomic Cafe had no customers...

Super comfortable atmosphere, well mannered and fast wait staff. Orders dont always come out perfectly so make sure you are specific, know exactly what to say before you go up to the counter because there is often a line.

One of my favorite spots in Newburyport. Sit at tables, soft chairs by the window, or in a cozy corner with couches. Good pastries, good drinks and friendly folks. Often has music Friday & Sat evening.
