The AMBIENCE This is a really hip and trendy place. As you walk in everyone is talking and its not crazy loud. There is an upstairs section but its creepily quiet. I went up and it was packed yet not a single peep from a single person so I decided to find some room downstairs and hang out with a friend. The FOOD. DRINK I had a bottle orange soda which is whatever. ( I dont really do coffee but was in the area and wanted to stop in but my friend said it seemed ok - nothing fantastic) EAT I got a poppy seed muffin which tasted a little stale but it could be because we were here at 3 in the afternoon. There really wasnt much else to pick from besides a scone and one more thing. Just seemed like the place lacked selection. I also saw a menu for coffee but that was it - nothing freshly made besides the coffee and maybe thats their thing. No idea but the scone my friend got was ok - but nothing amazing or above average. The SERVICE We barely stood in line and the coffee was avail crazy quick! The girls working behind the counter were super chill and really nice to us and made the place feel inviting.

It is refreshing to see a home grown coffee shop rise admist a neighborhood that does not have a lot of offerings of a place to go and chill with your friends. The atmosphere is cozy and laid back with classic rock softly playing in the background. The iron pressed sandwiches, especially their Pesto Chicken Wrap is great comfort food. The coffee and specialty drinks are excellent and remind you almost of an old fountain parlor. The loose-leaf teas are organic and the shakers are out of this world (especially the pomegranate-tea shaker). The place is run with knowledgable barristas who can guide you through their menu to ensure the you make the right pick.

Love setting up shop upstairs at Star and working all day. Its really quiet upstairs and great for times when you need to get in some uninterrupted work time. It can be a little awkward to make phone calls or have any sort of conversation upstairs because it is so quiet. The downstairs is so loud that you may want to cut your head off. Ive been told that I am kind of like my 90-year-old grandma, but the downstairs makes me want to emerge into a hole and never return. The coffee is great. Fun atmosphere. It is just too loud. My grandma would agree.

More than blow-your-mind, locally roasted coffee made by true artisans who maintain first name relationships with their farmers all over the world, Dark Matter is a cultural hub for the neighborhood. People here truly care about and each other. They also have SUPER cool art exhibits up on a monthly rotation. Its provided my house with more than a few fantastic pieces. Oh, and did I mention the coffee is amazing? Take it from a life long coffee addict- this is the best Ive seen yet. Especially their Unicorn Blood espresso. Just. Yum. So good.

I wanted to go to Dark Matter for the first time but they were doing a class on Friday. One of the employees was outside and directed me to walk 2 minutes down to Star Lounge. I tried the Mayan Mocha. The coffee was high quality and I got to watch as the barista crafted the drink. It had a little heat from the chili pepper but the cinnamon flavor balanced it out. It was not too sweet and had complex flavors. Everyone there was pleasant. I will def be going back to try more specialty drinks.

This place is everything a coffeeshop should be. First of all, great coffee, and quite a variety to choose from. They roast their own beans, upstairs I think? And you can buy whole, fresh-roasted beans (about $20/lb.) of many different variations. I like one called Unicorn Blood. They pour an excellent cup, too. Real pros. They have a few pastries and stuff, too. Friendly staff. And the atmosphere is super chill and great. I dont much hang out in coffeeshops but this place wants me to hang more.

OK lets get this straight. Nobody makes a better cappuccino! The thing I love about this place is THE STAFF! They are super sweet super helpful and seem to love their job and love what they do. In the world of coffee can be really pretentious and the people could be really nasty but theyre not. Everyone of these dark matters coffee shops I go into the people working there are lovely. Get the large cappuccino for there and it comes in two servings. Its like two drinks for the price of one!

Star Lounge serves what could be the best coffee in Chicago and the nearby surrounding area. Ive had a couple different kinds of Dark Matter coffee before, but this was my first time actually going to Star Lounge. I ordered a Gingersnap Trainwreck and it was amazing! It was also really cool to watch the barista make the drink. No one at Starbucks has ever put so much effort into making me a latte. Anyway, this place is worth the trip! Check it out and buy some coffee to bring home.

Yes. There will be a long line for you to stand in before you get your coffee. Yes. It will be worth it. The speciality latte drinks are phenomenal and its hard to argue that youll find a better cup at many other places. It does get a bit crowded and the bar / line system can be a bit difficult to navigate but once youve gotten your cup and settled in youll forget all else once you dive into whats guaranteed to be an awesome cup of coffee.

What a great coffee lounge! When I first moved to Chicago I was without internet for about a week. Since I work from home, I needed a place I could sit and get some work done. I headed over to Star Lounge and it was so good! The ambiance, noise level, and delicious coffee make for a really great work space. It also seems like a great place to just grab a coffee with a friend. I will definitely be heading back!

My favorite coffee in Chicago. Theyre always experimenting with new blends and the staff is incredibly friendly. I would recommend any of the drinks - they cater to people who love a nice sweet and delicious drink, but also those who love to add a little spice. Great for weekend hangouts to just chat over a cup of coffee. Back area is great in the summer. Coffee aside, they have great pastrami sandwiches.

You can truly get a detailed description of each coffee. As your resident Portland coffee snob, places like this made me able to transition to Chicago. Great coffee, wifi, not too much attitude, a little crowded but hey thats because its amazing. Some of the best whole beans in town. Let the barista tell you about them as they vary widely and if you listen, youll get the best plus a free coffee to go!

Awesome Dark Matter coffee and free wifi. Not so much on the hipster clientele always, but everyone is kind and there certainly isnt any pretentious Starbucks-speak going on here. The wifi doesnt work if you arent using a mac, so sorry PC users! But the coffee is worth the trip over Western. Bonus- you can buy bags of Dark Matter beans here to brew at your leisure in your own coffeepot.

Hipster baristas for sure. I came here because I needed to use the internet. It wasnt working, so I went up to the barista, who made me wait until she finished her conversation to even recognize me then just pointed to the chalkboard with the wifi info on it. I told her I was having problems with it and she said "oh" and turned away to another conversation.
