You think you know if you already like Focaccia or not? Well if you have not had it yet from the Liguria Bakery you dont really know what Focaccia can be. I discovered Liguria Bakery (est 1911) within a years of my moving to San Francisco at the time I was living near Powell and Bush so it was a pretty fast trip from that location. Now living in the avenues and a few years older I wish I could get to the Liguria Bakery more often but dang I really like sleeping in.. BTW reality check: Those of us in the Bay Area are very spoiled when it comes to breads, we have some of the best artisan bakers in this part of the country and have easy access to yummy Sour Doughs, Dutch Crunch / Tiger Breads and in the case of the Liguria Bakery, Focaccia yes this is probably the best or one of the best Focaccia bakeries in the United States. All I can say is make time during some part of your life and get here at some time after 7:00 in the morning and buy a variety of breads and experience them. You can buy them whole and wrapped in paper and tied with a string or cut into 8 long pieces and tucked in a bag for oh so easy and good eating. Would say try the green onion which some people have compared the flavor to onion cakes. Try the Pizza which is just a great thing to snack on or have with lunch. But you really can not go wrong with the bread here and it is worth just exploring to see which types you like. Strong suggestion that visiting foodies make an early morning pilgrimage here.

There was no line!!!! (On a Wednesday around 4 PM Woolworth)Naturally I had to go with the chocolate chip cookie with walnuts. Not a nut hater or nut allergy-holder but I dont get why they dont make plain chocolate chip cookies here! Anyways it was $4, HUGE and amazing. From the outside it almost looked like a scone but once you broke it open and took a bite you could tell it was soft and gooey on the inside. Basically the perfect cookie consistency of chewy + solid on the outside + slightly undercooked on the inside. Washed it down with their iced coffee which was decently strong, would come back for more COOKIES!

Our family has been coming to Liguria for over 50 years. Simply the best bread and you cannot beat the ambience. The customers you meet in line are friendly and visit from all over. On Christmas Eve and Easter Holiday I have actually stood in line for over two hours and it is worth it. In line we share stories from where we are from (me two hours away) and how long we have been visiting this establishment. There are not too many family owned business out there and the two ladies working the counter are a hoot. Please watch Seinfelds episode of Soup Nazi before your visit. You will see why. Ciao!

Best in North Beach is right. Wow, I love seeing the focaccia welcomed into this world in the morning and sharing an awesome table with a street view. Its so special and the breads taste authentically Italian and the people who come in are as welcoming as the employees to what may come of the day - with a positive vibe. It has to do with great food and knowing that the bakery strives to have top quality and delicious food and wonderful people to sell it to. Come on over - and stay for a long time, its a place you can feel really happy to be in. Leave the laptop at home if you can!

Liguria Bakery makes fresh focaccia and only focaccia. There are no decorations, except for an old scale and cash register in the window. This bakery is focused solely on just one delicious product, though you can choose from about half a dozen vegetarian toppings (never any meat or cheese). This old-time bakery across from Washington Square Park in North Beach closes at 2 PM or when the focaccia runs out and let’s just say that they always close before 2, with good reason. Get there as soon as you can, no special orders, no nonsense, and bring cash!

If the Gates of Heaven were serving complimentary cookies, chances are they were baked at Liguria. Specifically the chocolate chunk walnut. These oversize cookies served warm, oozing with melted milk chocolate chunks are the most amazing cookies ever created. Its rich and sweet making you run for a glass of milk. The double chocolate, oatmeal raisin, peanut butter chocolate are just as good but the chocolate walnut is by far the best. If its still available, make sure you pick up a chocolate roll. A warm crispy roll oozing with delicious chocolate.

This place is authentic Italian complete with the grumpy old lady and all! Dont let that deter you, the foccacia is fantastic! Absolutely the best you can get in all of SF and perfectly located near Washington Square Park where you can bring a bottle of wine (sshhhhh) and enjoy. Although they have more classic and plain foccacia, think garlic or onion, branch out and try the savory raisin or saucy foccacia. Be quick! They are sold out about 3 hours after opening each morning!

I just drool when I think of eating a piece of garlic focaccia. Ask them to cut them in pieces - its easier to eat on the go. I think I can eat the whole bag! There is nothing like it. Just melts in your mouth. Get there early, especially before 9 a.m. (you dont have to put money in the meter. That will save you 50 cents. Yes, the shelf really go empty. You can pre-order (excluding holidays). If you go around noon, you are taking your chances to be disappointed.

Hands down the best focaccia best in the city! The store from is pretty small, just an open space, counter, and shelves after shelves of delicious focaccia! The staff is really nice! The little old lady who helps to make and wrap the focaccia for the customers is adorable! Because they sell so much, the focaccia is always fresh! If you cant wait long enough to go home and eat it, they also cut it for you in cubes so you can eat it on the go wherever you go!

My mistake of paying a visit during the afternoon hrs, a line consisted of 20 people. I was shock to see the bakery was very tiny, a total of 5 customers fills the room. Aurilia Bakery are well known for their delicious cookies, they bake their cookies just to the point where the center is still soft and chewy with chunks full of chocolate chips and nuts. Did I mention there cookies are about 3 inches thick? Cookies are about $4.00 each but worth the price.

Talk about a hidden gem -- this place has the best focaccia in the city. The best part? Thats all this place offers. No tables, no chairs. Just a counter and focaccia. They open early and close when they sell out. My tip -- grab some focaccia (havent had a bad variation yet) and head over to Washington Square Park and enjoy that beautiful San Francisco weather. If its raining, walk a few blocks up to Caffe Trieste and enjoy a cappuccino with that focaccia.
