Okay so listen up! Mariposa Ice Cream is going to have a lot of if nothing but 5 star reviews. Im here to give you the real tips you need to know. Actually, the most important piece of advice you have ever gotten when it comes to iced treats. First a little background. I am a chocoholic. Fanatic, unrelenting, I order chocolate with chocolate and nothing else. Thats not easy when youre at Mariposa, whos delicious hand made custom flavors roll across the pallet like a delicate butterfly dancing on iced sweet cream. So normally Ill taste something to see what Im missing, and just order my 9 billionth chocolate shake. But heres the deal... theres something else here that you cannot miss if you can get it. They have this ice cream called "peanut butter and jelly". Listen, this stuff pulls it off ... its like you are eating peanut butter and jelly but ice cream and it is amazing. By itself this flavor is enough to fight wars over. Or maybe sue for world peace in line with the really cool 60s Beetles theme they have going on. However... if you add this topping they call "wet walnuts" to the mix what happens is so explosive I dare not write about this any further. That said, they do not always have that flavor of ice cream. They do however have a full selection and the sweet, sweet couple who run the shop are just amazing. Do yourself a favor and hop over here sometime. Check their hours and days because theyll close up on you when you least expect it!!

This is our go-to ice cream place. Dick and Anna are wonderful. They are very supportive of local schools, local causes, and local politics. They make all of their own ice cream and waffle cones. This means that a given flavor may vary slightly over time. The selection is good. The list on the board includes all the current flavors, the freezer case doesnt list the flavors hiding underneath. The decor is a collection of many things. They have a lot to look at while you eat your ice cream. The store is small with limited seating. This generally isnt a problem except during very busy times. Id give Mariposa two spoons up!

Two words: Mexican Chocolate. I love coming to Mariposas. It is hands down the best ice cream in San Diego. It is even better than Thrifty. The people working there are always very friendly. You can try any of their flavors before you buy. They dont have over 30 flavors, but they dont need to. What little they have all works well. The prices are reasonable for what you get. The ice cream is hand made, so it is always fresh, creamy, and it just has that great "natural" taste and feeling. If you havent been here yet, you need to! Dont forget to check their hours of operation. Most of the time the earliest they open is 1PM.

Met Dick for the first time back in May of 2014. Found our he is a Navy veteran and thats all it took for him to open up with his sea stories of when he served. Unfortunately he has passed on to next life and will be missed. His ice cream was and still is the best. He made once made a watermelon sorbet, not because he had to, but simply because I said Id never had any and Id like to try it some day. Rest in peace ol Squid, fair winds and following seas.

Not great ice cream, but pretty good, which is a great find given the regions lack thereof. Southern California is not particularly well known for its fresh dairy products, and usually Id choose grocery store boxed ice cream, frozen yogurt, or snow over any ice cream shop, but this place is worth stopping at. Parking is an issue, as with nearly every decent eatery in this part of San Diego. May have to walk a bit.

Three stars for the awesome staff. However, the quality of the ice cream was disappointing. I truly wanted to like Mariposa from the reviews Ive read. Unfortunately, the ice cream just had too much air in it. It wasnt dense enough. The flavors werent there either. The ice cream wasnt rich at all but I still ordered a small scoop since I sampled a few flavors. I didnt enjoy it, though.

Sure, this place has ice cream better than your typical chains like Coldstones or Ben and Jerrys, but as far as mom and pop ice cream places, I definitely expected more. I had the heath butter toffee which tasted a lot more ordinary than I expected. I might come back to try the Mexican Chocolate, which is what everyone else raves about, but so far, I am unimpressed.

This is now my favorite go-to ice cream place!! Although I wish they had a bigger variety of flavors to choose from and samples, I think its cool how they make their ice cream on the spot. Not just that but I love the area, and its really nice how they have an outdoor seating!! The texture of the ice cream is what really drawn me in.. DEFINITE FIVE STARS!!!!

Ive tried a few different flavors here and one of my favorite things about the ice cream is that it is not overly sweet. Its just a great neighborhood spot for a scoop. There are some seating areas inside and a couple outside as well. Though it is not my absolute favorite ice cream shop, I have not been disappointed by the flavors Ive tried so far.

Its a small mom and pop place but right when you walk in you smell the ice cream. The place is decorated with Beatles memorabilia and a photo of Will Farrell. I opted for the Mexican chocolate and the bf had the peanut butter fudge. Both were delicious, sweet, creamy, and cold. Ice cream here is refreshing and sweet enough to not feel too guilty.

Mom and pop ice cream shop. A great mix of traditional and unique flavor options. Best thing is the service - family owned and friendly every time we visit. Certainly miss the Ice Cream Man behind the counter, but there is simply no other choice in town for great ice cream and good vibes. Their Temecula location is also awesome.

An Adams Ave staple and *must* try! With all these new ice cream and yogurt places popping up my heart still belongs to Mariposas. The Mexican chocolate and peanut butter fudge are my all time favorite ice cream flavors. Ever. The owners are warm and welcoming. They obviously pour their heart and souls into their ice cream!

This is exactly the type of ice cream shop ive been looking for. Small, unique, all made in house. The two ladies behind the counter were really friendly and suggested trying before we bought. The icecream was really rich so if you think you need two scoops, consider getting one. Great spot for some post dinner dessert.

Nice local ice cream shop with friendly and fun staff. The ice cream was nothing to write home about, but the variety of flavors and options is good. The texture of the ice cream is more icey than I like (Im more of a creamy fan), but if that is the texture you like, Mariposa Ice Cream will be a great treat for you!

The ice cream is good, but I had high expectations after finding out this place is Will Ferrells go-to spot when hes in town, and it didnt quite meet those expectations. In my opinion, there are some better ice cream/gelato shops in San Diego County. Bing Haus in Convoy and Escogelato in Escondido come to mind.
