Now, to a critique from an actual German... I was looking for a German market to buy packaged powdered spaghetti bolognese sauce, since I find American spaghetti sauce in glass jars extremely bland and watery and found this on Google. Then I got lulled in by reviews of many Americans who purportedly took their German friend there that said the food tasted just like in Germany and gave the Biergarten section a try. I ordered the Leberkaes (German: liver cheese), looking forward to one of my favorite German meats that you cannot get at an American butcher. At first, I was kind of confused that it would be served on Sauerkraut with an egg instead of a Kaiser roll but I figured that this may be a regional difference (Im not Bavarian. Never been to Bavaria). I got a measly 1cm thick piece of what looked some type of red grilled spam (didnt look like your typical leber kaes, which is supposed to be pink and juicy with a dark flaky crunchy crust). It tasted like some type of unsavory sausage but it didnt even come close to what Fleisch Kaes is supposed to taste like. My friends 1cm thick Nuernberger sausages with the same lame sides of Sauerkraut and potatoe salad didnt look that delicious either. (Seriously, Germans dont eat Sauerkraut at every meal. Growing up, Ive eaten Sauerkrat maybe twice a year, at most.) So thats a no to the purportedly German food for me. Also, I didnt get my side of fries until like 10 minutes after my friend and I were done eating, by the way. If it had been a crowded place, I wouldnt really mind but we came at about 11AM and there were maybe 3 other tables. The waiter and bus boy came by about 3 times saying "oh yeah! Fries!" Also, if you are German and hoping to have a conversation in German with your waiter, this is not the place. The entire staff was American, at least when I went there. I didnt order any beer since I dont drink alcohol but I would believe that it tastes the same since the beer is imported and not brewed there. Its like going to a German market and being surprised that the imported products are authentic. Speaking of market, the products there are indeed German and while the selection is very small, you can find your essentials like powdered bolognese sauce, which is why I bumped this up to two stars. However, everything seems overpriced. A square of Ritter Sport chocolate here costs $4.05 (about 70ct in Germany), in comparison, I pay $3,25 for a square at the market at Tressider on Stanford campus (with a similarly large selection) and $1,99 for a square at Trader Joes (the selection is smaller but they have that dope Leipniz cookie type).

They have a great selection of German beers on tap, and even their pear cider is deliciously unique. Its a very popular place, and has the liveliest beer house environment on the peninsula. You always feel like youre walking into a party. The thing is, its extremely difficult to get a seat if you come after 5pm. There is no hostess to meet you at the door and put you on a waiting list. So you and your buddies just have to squeeze in and stand next to a table like vultures, hoping the people occupying that table will leave. It can get awkward, when you have people waiting and the people on the table are still hanging around chatting for 15+ minutes after theyve drained their mugs. As for the food, be warned that their kitchen closes early (8pm last time I checked) so be there early if you want proper food with your drink. They have a wide selection that includes other European-style fare aside from German fare. I agree that the "German" food here is not authentic German food; it has obviously been tweaked for American tastes. Foreigners who visit Germany often complain that the food there is too bland for them. So it follows that a German would find the food at this place too spicy. Service is kind of a hit or miss; the servers are super nice and chill but because the place is super busy, it can be a challenge to get the attention of somebody to take your order. Once I ordered a drink and the guy completely forgot about it. Half an hour later, when I finally asked him about it, he apologized profusely. He promptly brought me my drink and said it was on him because of the slip-up.

This place is about as hole in the wall as it gets. You basically sit down anywhere or order some beer from the bar (about 10 German beers on tap) and then someone comes by and takes your order. This place is super casual. The crowd is pretty varied and most of the patrons seemed very chill and cool, everyone is just having a good time and chilling. The food here is honestly not that great (I can only speak to the Bratwurst and Chicken Apple Sausage). The brat was completely flavorless and the mustard and kraut were crucial to adding any flavor to that dish. The chicken apple sausage had some more flavor but still seemed very uninspired. The beer selection really shined here. I was able to try a number of beers either in a liter or half liter. The appetizers (pretzels with cheese and meat) looked really good and Ill try those next time I come here. Overall come here for the beer, apps and cool atmosphere; Youll really enjoy it!

How could I not save my 200th review for the coolest beer garden in Northern California. Gourmet Haus gave me faith that I actually could like beer. I was introduced to this place last year by some friends who were diehard regulars. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, and Im a huge fan of the outdoor experience since it feels like a community gathering of people who are just looking to have fun and unwind. I always come in here with the mindset that I want to try something completely new, so Ive tried quite the range of beers. All of the hefeweizens are delicious, so if you arent a huge fan of beer, I recommend starting with those. Just be prepared since the glasses are huge and each drink feels like a meal. They also have delicious german food including their amazing large pretzel covered with meat and cheese. Beer food perfection. If you havent visited this place, you are definitely missing out!

I am German and usually avoid places like this as they can be very disappointing. Therefore, I was surprised to get some decent Bavarian (not German) food here. We only have been to the beer garden and we got in shortly before they closed the kitchen (be aware they close the kitchen very early I think it was around 20:00), but the staff was super nice and ensured we still get some food. Be aware that the noise level insight can be rather high and it is hard to have a conversation, but that could be described typical as well ;o). And I will definitely be back to find out what they have in the shop, which unfortunately is closed in the evening. The only thing I really would suggest is somebody to update their website. It is horrible how many spelling mistakes they made in their product / brand list (that way they never can be found easily) and the page looks very outdated.

German Beer! If you want a good selection of German beer look no further. They have 10+ German beers on tap that constantly rotate. Starting in September they have Octoberfest beers available. The beers are quality not just run of the mill junk. The food is pretty good as well (not the best) but decent. It is a bit pricey but when combined with beers it definitely satisfies any hunger. Im big on there sausages (except for the currywurst, not my favorite), also their pretzel and shredded fried potato (like a hash brown but crispier) with apple sauce are nice large starters good for multiple people. The store is awesome too! If you need German food goods this is probably your best bet. Youll have to check it out as there are too many things to list.
