The cottage looks and feels more like a sandy east coast summer time beach food stand than a La Jolla breakfast spot. Outdoor seating white and tealish color scheme and trees and umbrellas for shade, inside is a little too stark and bright with the windows already sending in a ton of light. Their menu is actually pretty basic with nothing too adventurous. I had to learn this the hard way. Chilaquiles, a personal favorite had any resemblance of authentic butchered out of it. Eggs were good, the idea was great, but poorly executed. The food was good, but either not what I thought or the chef has not really had chilaquiles. Mimosas are not bottomless and the steelcut irish oats are way overpriced. Good, but sweet enough in their own right that the brown sugar isnt quite a necessary, plus the natural sugars in the raisins and fruit is an overload of sugar, may as well get pancakes soaked in syrup. Baja Chicken Hash was a very classic medley of chicken sausage, hollandaise, tortillas and a poached egg. Pretty light and refreshing considering large breakfasts are the preferred size. Eggs La Jolla has a balsamic, spinach and mushrooms that reminds me of a salad, but works well with the rich egg. The gruyere cheese on the Southern California omellete is ooey gooey and doesnt burn even when fresh out the kitchen. Very consistent in each bite. The Tuscans belted brie was creamy, but needed say the balsamic to balance the msuhrooms and tomato. The egg is really neutralized from the brie. Lemon ricotta pancakes are probably the smoothest and lightest pancake around. Dont mistake fluffy and air pocket for lightness. Perhaps not in weight, but just overall. Oatmeal pancakes are really unique a great way to get the fiber in yoru sweets. Oat bran donut is what I think of when I eat it. The only place Ive ever seen it or had it too. Ive only had lunch here once, but the crab melt is excellent, lemon, chive, sourdough, very San Francisco. Warm and buttery rich. The cilantro avocado sauce on the grilled mahi mahi is really good, could basically go on anything. Service is good, reminiscent of so many good breakfast brunchy coastal places. I find the prices to be higher than anything else comparable in North County, but I think the décor and ambiance are actually relaxing so perhaps a small uptick is worth it.

I have tried Eggs bendicts at coffee shops to local eateries and nothing can compare to the deliciousness of The Cottages Eggs La Jolla. Of course necessary precautions must be made in order to come here but once youre in, you are in. Arrive early is an obvious tip but it does depend on the day and the size of the party. If only a group of 2 as long as you dont go on a Friday-Sunday morning (8am-11am) you should be fine. Ive arrived numerous times throughout the week at around 9am and gotten seated immediately. With larger parties obviously come earlier. The cottage also used to close at 2pm and if you were looking for a late afternoon breakfast meal that was the perfect time to come! however now the cottage is open for dinner so you can come anytime!! So obviously you should order the Eggs La Jolla, with spinach, tomatoes, mushrooms, and a balsamic dressing perfectly mixed together and presented with potatoes how could you go wrong. Their hollandaise sauce is to die for and I have never received a benedict that didnt have a perfect oozing egg on top that breaks to combine the entire meal together. Take one bit of all this goodness and I promise you will be in heaven... EXCEPT, now you are able to order one eggs benedict and any of their batters! The lemon ricotta pancakes are amazing but you must add blueberries to it. I promise you wont regret it. But of course the second most raved item on the menu is the stuffed french toast! you can get strawberries or bananas, or both! and trust they are delish. I love this place and i keep coming back for more especially with the friendly service headed by manager Jason! Hes great! try the cheesecake! Happy Brunching!

The staff here is wonderful! Before being seated I wanted to make sure they had gluten free options on their dinner menu (dinner is a recent addition for them). At first he thought there were only two options but went to double check and came back with wonderful news about there gluten free options. All three of their sandwiches can be made with gluten free bread, all but one salad could be gluten free, three out of the six fish options were gluten free, and the fish special that day was gluten free. Only one appetizer was gluten free and there were no chicken or meat dishes that were gluten free. The childrens menu had gluten free pasta as an option. The host and waitress were not always very familiar with what had gluten but they were happy to ask the chef and the chef seemed very confident in knowing what had gluten in it. I am very sensitive to cross contamination and did not get sick from eating at The Cottage. The food itself was amazing! I got salmon over risotto with sauteed veggies, the veggies were a little bland but the salmon was superb and paired nicely with the marinara based risotto. The host informed me that he will be redoing the menus and wants to make sure that gf options are clearly marked on the new menus.

Do NOT go here until they replace this manager Isabell!!!! She totally needs to take anger management therapy. RUDE and UNPROFESSIONAL! And the owners, please keep an eye on your business! Weve been going here for years. Our party sometimes was small, huge on some occasions of baby or bridal showers, most of the time were 6-7 people. Weve always had a good time no matter how long the wait could be. We used to just hang out and enjoy the neighborhood. We took out of towners here every time anyone was in town. All of that was until yesterday. This woman, hard to believe she could be a manager, repeatedly, in a very loud voice, right in front of other customers, asked us if we wanted to go away as we asked why she couldnt put 2 tables together to seat us. Many parties of 4 were called in ahead of us. We had 7. She REFUSED to serve us , including 5 hungry children, after an hour long of waiting. We do not want to ever see this womans face again! And we do not want to come back to this place no matter how adorable it is and how good the French toast is. And we will let our friends know that we wont be organizing an event there and will not go to an event there until we know that this woman is no longer there.

Food was amazing, service was mediocre at best. I got the impression that our server totally ignored us(we were her only table wearing casual, even though most of the customers sitting in other sections were casual), every time she would walk by us to get to her other tables, I tried to flag her down for water with no luck, the bus boy saved her. Not once during our breakfast did she ask if we needed anything but asked the tables next to us multiple times. Once we finished eating we had to flag her down to get our bill even though we clearly done eating. We put a debit card in the tray to pay and she walked by 2 times and looked right at it without grabbing. At this point I was certain she was treating us differently so I changed the card to Amex plat and it was immediately collected by a different server. Needless to say, this casual restaurant has horrible service if you show up casual for breakfast.
