First I have to say that I dont like giving restaurants bad reviews. But after eating at Kismat Restaurant 3 times in the past couple of years I feel I have to tell it like it is. Each time I have gone there I have hoped that the food would get better. Unfortunately in my experience it has not. I love and have been eating a wide variety of Indian food for years having lived in S. London and now working near Curry Hill - so I have eaten a fair bit of S. Asian food from a variety of regions so I know what is reasonably good and what is not. My experience with Kismat each time has been disappointing. Every time I have walked out thinking why did I waste my money here on extremely mediocre and barely indistinguishable food. The good things about this place - the decor and service and the onion naan - for that, I gave it one star. Last night my girlfriend and I ordered a mango lassi which which was a glass of some sort of mango tasting syrup in either watered down yogurt or milk with little bits of mango. Our shrimp curry was small overcooked shrimp in some sort of brown bland sauce. The mixed vegetable Du Piazi - Jalfrazie also in some sort of bland brown sauce was barely indistinguishable from the sauce of the shrimp curry. The saffron rice had a really bad after taste (not from the little or any saffron that might of been in it). One bright note was the onion naan which was very good. It is such a shame that this place serves such bland mediocre food. It could easily be better without much effort. I guess because they are the only game in a neighborhood with few good restaurants, they can get away with it. If you want to try some very good Indian food at similar prices in Manhattan, get on the subway and head downtown to 27th & Lexington where you will find much better fare. A number of Indian restaurants have recently opened in Harlem (which I havent tried yet) so that might be a better option. I doubt they can be much worse.

I have eaten at more than 20 different Indian restaurants on the East Coast and this was by far one of the most disappointing. The food was average at best... it was just bland, plain and simple... bland... I ended up having to use the chutney given for the appetizers just to get my taste buds going. As per the service... Meh... the gentleman at the front of the house was nice and pleasant but it was clear that he had not been trained properly. It is standard practice to bring out serving spoons for the multiple dishes I ordered but I was left asking for more spoons and when I asked... I was handed one (I ordered THREE entrees). I understand this restaurant is going through some physical renovations and I am very appreciative of that but it should not impact the quality of the food/service. I wish them the best of luck in the future.

Its not that the food was bad, but it was god awful bland. example the chicken was moist, but the flavoring was all wrong. Its almost like they ran out of Indian spices (At an Indian restaurant). Like someone who had never made indian food, made it for the first time, but forgot a page in the recipe. Granted, I generally like my indian food spicy (as I feel it should be unless otherwise specified) however my wife (Who likes her indian food bland) even mentioned it was far too bland for her, to the point where she said it wasnt even worth eating. We ended up reheating the meal on the range and adding our own spices to the mix. Unless we hear of a new menu, or some sort of revamp, we wont order from here again, which is a shame since we love indian food, especially from a place that delivers.

If i can give a zero rating i would of giving all zeros. from the moment you get there you can see how unprofessional the waiters are there are no spoons forks on the table so we assumed they will bring it with the food they bring the appetizer with no bread or a way to eat it and when you ask for it the waiter comes and says he only has two hands will go get a third hand if u cant manage it than you the waiter takes you order and doesnt bring it all at once brings the casserole with only one plate of rice for three orders and you have to wait for the other waiter to come see whats wrong and just apologize to bring the spoons and doesnt bring anything am sorry to say but this is the worst experience i have encountered the the whole USA

Only Indian food in this neighborhood and hardly any Indians around to critic the menu, hence they are still open. Being an Indian, I was shocked after the order delivery. Indian food does not come with boiled cabbage and the dal was a yellow thick broth, lamb Rogan Josh does not contain raw tomatoes and onions while malai kofta is supposed to be balls of Indian cottage cheese (paneer) and potatoes mixed. The worst part was when we were asked if we wanted basmati rice we said yes, and still they delivered some undercooked Columbian brand...of course the chicken samosas were tasty, the filling was dry and the condiments had gone bad...they were not refrigerated obviously! My first and last time ordering here...

Kismat is an exquisite dining experience. They have the best Indian food Ive ever had. Their prices are very competitive, and the staff is among the nicest and most attentive I have experienced in this sector of the service industry. A welcome addition is their new Sunday buffet complete with everyones favorites. The food is fresh, delicious, and it is extremely obvious the chef and owners take pride in what they serve to their customers. The spice level is mild which can be elevated if you like to live dangerously, making this a safe place to try the cuisine for the first time. I eat here regularly and will continue to do so.

EXCELLENT Indian restaurant. Its BYOB, fyi. Order as much garlic naan as you can; you wont be disappointed. The lamb or mixed tandoori is fantastic. Meats are tender and flavorful. The spices and sauces are great, and the wait-staff explain them well. The atmosphere is intimate and generally hushed, so it is easy to have a relaxing evening with great food and conversation at Kismat. We have ordered-in multiple times as well, and though still excellent, its not quite as good as being at the restaurant itself (the naan particularly suffers when not served hot and fresh). But such is always the case with food ordered to-go.

I have been coming to Kismet for over 22 plus years. I have introduced many friends and family to kismat. No one has ever had a bad experience. Kismat is by far the best Indian food I HAVE EVER HAD! For the past 12 years, i have lived in Bergen county,NJ I cross the GWB everytime and pay $18 just to go there. The mango chicken tikka masala, is AMAZING. It is the only place that I have fouND that makes it. The fact the owner answers every post shows there commitment to their customers . All the best to you guys, continue the tradition cooking. DonT change a thing!
