June 11 2016 was the last time that I will be eating at Russell Street Deli. I was there for brunch with 2 of my friends. One of my friends ordered the clam chowder and asked for a sample. She then ordered a bowl of the chowder. She discovered that, unlike the sample, the bowl of chowder was thick and tasted like flour, She informed our waitress that she could not eat the chowder and requested that it be removed from our bill. She was told that she could not do that because she had ordered the chowder after having the sample. Well the sample in no way represented the actual consistency of the chowder. Bottom line, the manager was so rude and in essence told us that the soup would not be removed because of the sample policy and stated :"Lets ring you up so that yo can go." Not my idea of good customer service!

I am a very picky eater. I went here with my parents and aunt and it was the best food ever. The place was very crowded and they had close seating, but it was fine. I had the special of the day the salmon burger and my dad got the Rueben. When I saw his sandwich, I was a little jealous until I took a bite of mine. It blew my mind! Fresh and hot and tasty and I wanted 3 more! It put canned salmon to shame. With homemade mayo with dill and fresh bread, it was sooooo good. I could only eat half, because it was huge, but I got a bite of my dads and the brisket meat was so tender and not that salty, but still had flavor. If you are visiting Detroit, this is a must to eat at. Very good prices too for what you are getting.

The one-star review from 2005 is out of date. There was a change of ownership a couple of years ago and service is both quick and extremely friendly. The food continues to be very good -- deli sandwiches, homemade soups, fresh salads. The atmosphere may not be for everyone. It is a bustling place where separate parties are seated at the same table (as in many European cafes), but if you are OK with that, the food is very good. Love the soups.

The quality here is always spot on. All fresh, local ingredients. Amazing soups. My favorite is their reuben sandwich, with soft, fresh corned beef and grilled buttery rye bread. Great variety of specials each day. On market days (Saturdays) expect a wait, but its worth it! Youll also share a table if you have less than 6 people, which is a great way to meet new people.

Great food, and a chance to meet interesting strangers. There is something for everyone here, from vegan, to meat lovers, you will be able to find plenty of great options. My favorite is the biscuits and sausage gravy, with a double order of home fries, but the curried split pea soup is a close second (I know, sounds strange, but you will love it).

Good not great, forgettable would be a good word to describe the sandwiches I have had here. Cheap for deli style sandwiches and the price is reflected in the quality of the food. Wouldnt recommend avoiding the place completely but would tell anyone considering it to not go out of their way to try it either.

The place itself is clean and solid, kinda nice market feel but my salad? It was just a bunch of cut up lettuce. I mean really? Couldnt you have put a slice of tomato? Cucumber? Onion? Nothing. Just exactly 2 thin carrot slices and a small handful of red cabbage, how about that for imagination huh? Oh well

Let me tell you why I love their spring salad - chicken grilled to perfection, tomatoes that taste fresh off the vine, peel left on the cucumbers, just the right balance of sweet (dried cherries) and salty / savory (pecans, dressing). Really. The perfect salad. Thank you Russell Street!!!!!

Amazing place. Super busy and crowded but in a good way. Lovely place for foodies. Took my five year old niece, she was very happy with the pancakes while my husband and I enjoyed a delicious omlet and a wonderful scramble that I chose the ingredients for. Yummy!

The Dinty Moore is the best corned beef sandwich I have ever had. Ever. This is the best sandwich. This is my favorite sandwich. Its the best from my perspective. Also, they have a really great menu of soups. Try the Clam Chowder. Its amazing.

I just dont see the hype. Ive been a few times but it is just so-so. You are crammed into community tables (Ive only gone during slow times), seems waiting on us is very annoying, and even though I love local ingredients...its bland.

The smoked turkey special with bacon is die to for! Ive noticed the worse reviews on here note waiting time and crowdedness...I always order takeout and Id recommend it, especially on Saturdays when Eastern Market is its busiest.

Absolutely delicious Pastrami Sandwich! This was by far the best deli Ive ever had. Sy Ginsberg quality meat is great! I will truly miss that flavor. The sandwich was about $4 cheaper than its equivalent in Las Vegas.

What has happened to Russel St Deli? I ordered a corned beef sandwich. Wheres the beef? It was 90% coleslaw - 10% beef. Plus it took 20 minutes and this was well after the lunch rush. Too bad. It used to be a great spot.

Too long of a wait and the food did not match the hype. average at best, not to mention the owners are seeking to make this place a sanctuary restaurant which employs illegals which is against the law.

I go every chance I get (weekends) Love the atmosphere, service and the prices are within budget also. Not only that but the location lets me get my grocery shopping for the week done after eating.

Fresh food, especially breakfast. diner style seating.... and always the same, cool staff. Call in your order to avoid the pickup wait. Just wisdom for the eastern market newbies. Enjoy!

Trendy, pricey, and crowded but the food really is that good. The sugar cured bacon is worth a visit all on its own. Just avoid Saturday farm market rush days. Lines are ridiculous.

Very long queue. Food looks good though, I wasnt going to wait around to taste it. It must be good if there are so many people waiting. Tip: try next door.
