I always wanted to bring a dining companion with me... because I wanted to share dishes between us. The baked ravioli was always a good starter. The cotelette with a side of angel hair in red sauce was just amazing. The braciole was also great and not something youd commonly find in DM. Id split each dish with an obliging dining companion and then revel in simple, good, honest food that kept me coming back. Once upon a time, and I hope still so, you could go out the side/back and, after ordering your meal, play a game of bocci ball when weather permitted... getting snookered and shamed by the Nonnis waiting for someone to beat at this fun out of doors game. Distance and schedule have kept me from here for far too long so my review is about what was fantastic when I was able to frequent a lifetime ago it seems.

I have been dinning here for years and it has become a regular place for us. I just love the family owned atmosphere and the food is good with a friendly staff. Its just not quite there though. I grew up in Detroit that had a host of family owned Italian places that will just rock your world and Tumea and Son’s is just so close to being there that it is painful to see them not go all the way. They need in my opinion, better bread, less food off the truck, a little less cooking on the pasta, and a few more really homemade items. Don’t get me wrong, I love this place I just wish they had gone the extra to make it great instead of good.

The service was pretty poor. They had forgotten to put in the food order of two of the people in our party, as well as getting two orders wrong. It was a party of roughly 10 so I understand that it can be difficult but after all was said and done they still charged fill price and it is very pricey. There are a lot of fantastic Italian joints in Des Moines. I would personally skip this one. Especially if you have a handful of people.

I would not call Tumea and Sons a treasure in fact I would call it decent food, overpriced, and dirty atmosphere. It lacks what it might of had in the early days and now is in desperate need of cleaning and painting. I am sorry fake grapevines are only neat when there is not 10inches of dust hanging off them. Skip this one there are much better Italian restaurants!

A great place to eat Italian that many do not know about. I like a restaurant where the proprieters are working hard for their business & are there interacting with their customers, never too good to talk to anyone. Forget any chain restaurant or hyped local restaurants; Tumea & Sons is where you have Italian when youre in Des Moines.

Both my husband and I had the special which was a Shrimp Prosciutto and Broccoli Herbed Alfredo. It was delicious! I agree with an earlier review that the bread was just "EH" but overall a great value. Our waiter was super friendly, giving us the feeling of family. I will absolutely be back for more.

Wont be back. Not a friendly place for minorities to eat. Heard a very crude comment on race by one of the brothers that run the establishment. Food is a 3 out of 5, service is about the same. Better places to eat in Des Moines then this dive.

Family owned, generous portioning, my absolute favorite place for a great meal. What really made this place stand out for me is the service, they remember our names what we like to order, which in this day and age is very very rare.

Their white sauce is AMAZING! All chicken dishes or pasta dishes have been delicious and best side salads in town. Service is nothing desirable but I guess that is kind of the family atmosphere they are going for?

Amazing well family run Italian place. The wait staff is fun and the food very good and full of authentic flavor. Fresh rolls on the table with the fixings for Italian butter. You will not be disappointed

5 star food but 0 star service. As much as my wife and I love the food we stopped going because we got tired of always being treated like crap from the wait staff. Walked out w/o eating last time.

We ordered here to go and when we came home we found a wonderfully seasoned, still hot meal with a delicious salad as well. 4 stars because the bread wasnt warmed up! Really good food though!

Real Italian food, served up in an atmosphere that lets you know that in here, youre family! I love this place, you know its real Italian when you cant find pizza anywhere on the menu. :-)

Amazing appetizer and main dishes at a great price. Large portions. The only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is that the canolli was not very good. Everything else was wonderful!

Food was good but could have used a little bigger portions. Service felt a little rushed. Not quite a 5 star. But will try it again.
