I came by on my lunch break with only an hour to spare. I thought that if came to a place where many people say the staff is friendly and personal, I would be fine. I sat at the bar and it took at least 5 minutes before someone noticed I was there. The place was not too busy, so this was very surprising. There were at least 7 empty tables. The bartender and server were watching the news on the tv with their back turned to me. Finally, I got a drink and then it was another 5 -7 minutes before I flagged down the bartender (the server ignored me - I guess because I wasnt in her section) then I placed my order. Needless to say the bartender was not personable. Didnt even attempt small talk and she made me feel as if I shouldnt be there. So, next time... I wont be. I will go somewhere else - where the customer is valued.

A classic staple of Church Hill. The Hill Cafe offers feel-good comfort food that is sure to not disappoint. My wife got the $20 filet mignon, which was cooked to perfection, and her choice of two sides that will be sure to excite. I took advantage of the fried chicken, easily my favorite dish, which was crispy on the outside yet tender and moist on the inside. My only complaint is that the fried chicken doesnt come with gravy, but Im a glutton and asked for it on the side. Hill Cafe is by far my top-5 places to eat in Richmond, the atmosphere is incredibly quaint, yet wildly charming. I recommend this place to everyone that visits.

This place fired me because i demanded to be paid the same amount as my underqualified yet overpaid male counterparts. As the ONLY female that has been employed by this kitchen in at least the past 5 years.....i am disgusted by the verbally comfirmed misogyny that lead to my termination. This ENTIRE group of restaurants (Richmond restaurant group) is racist, sexist, AAAAAND forces employees to clock OUT when working past 40 hours. ....and pays all excess of 40 hours in straight time....cash. ....off the books.....undocumented. .... The HILL CAFE AND ALL ITS SISTER RESTAURANTS SHOULD BE HEAVILY INVESTIGATED BY OSHA AND THE BBB.

Have to go back - its cozy and cute, in a great location with friendly and fast service on a Saturday night, the bartender good-looking (according to my 24 year old friend), the fried green tomatoes were yummy and served with a pimiento cheese but the caesar salad (my meal) was rather disappointing. The shrimp I ordered with it were delicious - smokily grilled. The romaine was wilted and the dressing was bland - like they forgot the anchovies. I ordered extra dressing to taste test it - same result. Salt helped (Ive never salted a salad before). I will be back to try some entrees however.

Sat at the bar on a Tuesday night. To my surprise, it was their rib night. Now, Im a fan of In House specials, but being from Texas, I just had to try. I started off with a House salad, which was beautifully prepared, had a crisp, crunchy texture, and was delicious. I sat and waited for a reasonable time after finishing, drooling at the thought of a rib and chicken combination that awaited. THE RIBS WERE AMAZING AND THE CHICKEN WAS TOO DIE FOR. Please try this food! Service was sub par from the bartender... 4 stars.

I live around the corner from the Hill Cafe and I am consistently happy with their food and service. My mom always wants to go there when she comes to visit, and I dont mind that either. The staff is friendly the atmosphere totally relaxed but not like a bar per se, and there are lots of choices on the menu to suit every taste. Their pulled pork sandwich is better than the Alamo, and the Alamo isnt bad at all!

My husband and I just had lunch there and service was great and my dish was very good, chicken fajitas . Husband ordered the meatloaf and it came black charred from the grill so the waitress replaced it with a better cut. It may be a new cooking fad now but his string beans were hardly cooked and still raw. He needs fiber but not that much, ha. Well return to try other dishes.

Very casual. Attentive wait staff in an unobtrusive way reminiscent of European restaurants. Walked over here after leaving Cpt. Buzzys across the street where I stood waiting for the guy at the register to take my order instead of continuing his lengthy conversation with a customer who already had paid. Crab cakes were delicious, light, and tender.

This little neighborhood Cafe is a cozy little venue right in the heart of shockoe bottom. I ordered an oyster dinner which I split with a friend and the waitress was kind enough to divided evenly on two plates. It was hot, fresh and delicious. Me and the person that I was meeting and enjoyed our meal thoroughly will be back.

All I want to say is my bff and I visited this place maybe 9 yrs ago. And to this day I still remember how amazing the experience was. My bff has now passed away but I will always remember that day we found The Hill Cafe. One day I will visit again with my family I now have. Thank you for the wonderful memories.

Pork Chop was amazing and tender enough to be cut with a butter knife. Crispy Eggplant I would recommend to anyone vegetarian or not. You will most likely have left overs. Fried Green Tomatoes for best app. Great Service. Will be regulars and recommend to anyone local.

Just got their Sunday brunch, what a disappointment. Have been here a few times but Im officially NEVER going back. Cold food, cold service, cant even toast some toast. Waitress was clueless and forgetful. I mean come on, at least try to care...

The food is delicious and becoming rare for Church Hill, not that expensive. I love their spoon bread, and their mushroom polenta is awesome. All of the blue plate specials are all good. This spot is a old CH standby for a reason.

The staff was very friendly. The food was very good. I enjoyed my atmosphere. I just moved around the neighborhood and wanted to try something in the area. It really surprised me. I definitely will be coming here more often.

Delicious food, perfect portions, perfect presentation. Hostess could smile a bit instead of act like we were a bother to her. Waitress was great though! Very cute neighborhood place, I really hope they continue to do well.

Very good bar food. Small but good beer selection and fairly inexpensive mixed drinks of good quality. If you like exposed brick with finely painted old style advertisements, you will enjoy this place as much as I did.

Came in during lunch (12:00) for a to-go order and it took forever. The bartender didnt even offer to get me a drink while I waited, I had to ask a Different server for a glass of water. I ordered the Tuna sandwich.

One of my all time favorite places! Cozy. Great for a date or meet up with friends. Has a variety of selections to choose from and I have never had a complaint, even with the changes in management.
