First let me say that all this is 100% true. Last night I took my girlfriend here after work for some fried dumplings. We ordered and I decided some lo mein would be good as well. I let her choose which kind and she surprised me with chicken. The dumplings came out and they were good. But then the lo mein came out and it tasted overwhelmingly BURNT. After that we were eating dumplings when she discovered not one but TWO HAIRS on the plate. I was pretty embarrassed and she played it down like it wasnt a big deal. But she made a point to tell me she wasnt surprised because the last time I took her there she got FOOD POISONING and thats why she insisted on chicken lo mein as last time we ate seafood. Even the fortune cookies had something off about them. I even joked how mine had a burnt spot on it. Overall, I have fond memories of this place from the past but this place will not see my business anymore. Just having to hear how I was wrong for not believing they gave my GF food poisoning is enough to make me avoid this place like the plague.

Id like to start off by saying that my family has been bringing me here since I was a baby, so going to the Shiao Lan Kung has been an established tradition for us, they know us and usually treat us very well. We love this place. The last time we went there was January 10th 2016, and I noticed they hired a new waiter. Other tables that came in well after us were completely served and out the door before my family. The waiter told us he deleted our order and had to re-enter it. We got all our food very late, and one of the main dishes we ordered never came to us. To top things off, they didnt give my family fortune cookies at the end of our meal, but everyone else got them. I realize the length of this review, but appreciate anyone who took the time to read it. Very disappointed with the Shiao Lan this time, hopefully they wont make these mistakes twice.

Ive always loved this place, Ive been eating here since I was a kid. In regards to Doreens comment about this place being "the worst ever": having the most generic order like general tsos and then basing judgement on a place known for authentic Chinese food (general tsos is americanized, not what youd find in shall we say Shanghai) is simply missing the purpose of eating at any authentic restaurant. You can get general tsos at ANY standard takeout. Youre telling us that you came all the way to Philly for chicken and broccoli? Thats like going to a 4 star French restaurant and ordering a baguette and reviewing their cuisine based off of a baguette. Try judging after you have the seafood hotpot, the mussels in a rich gravy sauce, or the fried tofu stuffed with shrimp.

This was, without a doubt, the worst Chinese food we have ever eaten. Ive been reading through the reviews and am shocked by the ones who say the food is good. My family and I couldnt finish our dinners. The hot and sour soup was VERY sour, and too heavy on the sesame oil. The General Tsos chicken was also too heavy with sesame oil and was more batter than chicken (and the batter itself was not good). The Chicken and Broccoli dinner was coated in a very unpalatable sauce and the texture of the chicken was slimy and fatty. The servers were very nice, but the food was not edible for us. We paid our bill, left a tip for our server, then left our full plates and headed out knowing if we ever come to Philadelpha again, we wont come back here to eat.

Ive been going to Shiao Lan Kung for almost ten years and it is literally the best Chinese food in Chinatown (this coming from someone of Chinese descent). Ive taken so many friends there and have yet to meet anyone who has been there and not enjoyed the food - everyone Ive taken has always walked away loving the food and planning their next visit. My personal favorites: salt-baked squid, honey walnut shrimp, boneless sizzling beef (and yes, it sizzles!), fresh garlic and broccoli, eggplant hotpot and much much more!

We went there because of the overall rating 4+ and were VERY DISAPPOINTED. If this is a 4 for Philadelphia I am sorry for you folks. The seafood in the seafood soup was so old and tasteless we couldnt finish it. The other plates were tasteless. Th place is dirty as well as the spoons and plates. I am terrified to imagine what is going on in the kitchen

Really good late-night Chinatown spot. All of the Chinese-American classics, and as far as I can tell a lot of great "authentic" dishes as well. The hot pots are really good, so is the salt-baked anything. Might sound weird, but the vegetable sides are awesome. Get baby bok choi with anything you order. Open til 4am on the weekends.

We were able to get seated and served promptly and the food was pretty tasty. One thing that took away from the entire experience was the visible dust in the dining room, which had wall fixtures with at least 1/4 inch of dust well within site. When Im eating the last thing I want to be thinking about is cleanliness!

While standing outside reading the menu a family came out and raved about how good the food was. They were right we loved it. We had Salt Baked Shrimp and Ginger Beef. Both were outstanding. Service was great as well.

Delicious food, period. I generally dont seek out Chinese food, but this place has turned me around. The atmosphere is a near zero (very clean, but drab), but the food will bring me back for sure.

Well prepared Chinese food. I had shredded pork, pickled mustard, rice noodle soup which was amazing. Extensive menu and inexpensive. Definitely authentic and deservedly of its reviews

We have been going here for years and even through some changes in ownership and price increases, the food remains excellent! This is our go to spot in China Town.
