First off let me start by saying I dont typically give negative reviews but this experience warrants a bit of constructive criticism. We happened upon Beach Street Cafe by chance, my wife and I had a couple hours to kill while waiting for our hotel room to be groomed prior to check in, so we headed to Santa Cruz from San Jose. At first glance the cafe is inviting, however, once I walked through the door that inviting feeling went away. There is no hostess present and no sign indicating what to do so I walked in and asked if we seat ourselves. The gentlemen behind the counter, who had his back turned to me, yelled to go back out and sign in on the waiting list. It took me a couple minutes to figure out what he was talking about but I finally found this "waiting list" he was talking about. It consisted of a very small clipboard with an equally small note pad. As I signed in I noticed there was just one other name above mine, a party of 5. There was only 2 of us and several tables for 2 available but we still had to wait, which was no big deal. Once we were finally seated our server was very pleasant and professional, she took our drink orders and got the drinks right out. BUT as we sat there deciding what to order we noticed time and time again employees yelling at people to "go out and sign in!" not understanding that the sign in sheet was very difficult to see. Each time they yelled at someone theyd make condescending remarks to one another about the person and chuckle. We were so turned off by the disrespectful and unprofessional behavior that we almost left, but wed been flying since 9pm yesterday and just wanted to eat something. We ordered our food, my wife had the French toast, which came out cold, and I had the crab omelette which was by far the worst excuse for an omelette Ive ever had. Definitely not worth $12!! Im not sure if this was just a bad day for the cafe, or business as usual, but I say avoid Beach Street Cafe if you value service!

We stopped by on a Friday morning and while the restaurant was half empty they were still taking names on a list outside as there is only one member of staff. Right by the beach youre not really spoiled for choice and Beach Street Cafe was the only cafe that had more than one or two options for breakfast that would satisfy my vegetarian friend. On the whole the food wasnt bad but it really wasnt great and I dont rate the coffee at all. If theres a big queue I would definitely go somewhere else but if you want to go to a place with a few options then stop by - but make sure you have a lot of time as the service can be quite slow.

I visited this place for late lunch on a Sunday afternoon, just as a few bigger tables were clearing out. The ambiance inside was really lovely, with a bunch of framed magazine covers all over the walls. The food was moderately tasty, and reasonably priced for the location right by the boardwalk. I like that they serve breakfast all day. However, the service seemed a bit rushed, as they brought the bill before we had even finished eating, although at the time the restaurant was mostly empty. Still, they were otherwise attentive, refilling my water glass frequently (important on a hot day!).

Bad Service Understaffed Honistly I dont like to give bad reviews but this place really stinks I was with my kids and there is this paper outside of the door your suppose to write your name on except it was a small notepad littarly on a thumbnail I walk in to sit down with my daughter in my hand and the waitress asked if I had written my name outside on the door? It was cold outside and there was empty chairs inside she called me out on it in front of everyone.... what pissed me off the most I was with my kids total BS guys

The little scrawny guy with Napoleon complex, rudly told us to leave when we asked why there were multiple tables empty and a lot of people waiting out on the sun to be seated. I asked for the managers contact info and he refused to give us that info and also refused to state his name. Horrible, has no idea of what customer service is, they need to let him go and get a real hostess.

I have no idea why is so difficult to make a decent breakfast. Overpriced for what they served. $3 for 3 slices of bacon (it was the only decent thing on my plate) The potatoes seem to be old, and if not they just boiled and put in the plate, cold and tasteless. Nothing is local or fresh.. So I guess is just a good stop for tourists.

Horrible service, especially from the skinny guy that works there. He seemed to be having a nervous breakdown and was telling people to leave since they were too busy and he couldnt handle it. He probably was about to go into a fetal position and start crying, management there should get rid of him. Very rude individual

My family loved it here, there service was great, the food was even better, and i will definatley make this my new place to go to. My family is on vacation here in santa cruz, and alot of places have been highly priced, which is expected, but had horrible service, and poor quality food, i highley recommend this place.

A very lively place that goes beyond and above the typical american diner, yet remaining original to its purpose. Ordered an excellent dish with eggs, spinach and artichokes and got a second one for free! Coffee was better than average. Invigorating sea side view! An overall winner!!

Notes say "open until 3pm" ... arrived at 2:40pm hoping to grab a sandwich ... door open but "closed" sign up ... me: "I thought you were open until 3pm ... ?" Employee: "Were open until the cooks have had enough!" Dont go here mid-afternoon ... they will probably be closed! :(

The food was so good! This is my new favorite part of Santa Cruz. Service was fast too, maybe because we went on a weekday when barely anyone was there. We paid for a parking meter but the lot across the street was FREE because the Boardwalk was closed.

Awesome food and awesome people! I accidentally left my credit card there and typically youd just kiss it goodbye but the guy working knew exactly who I was and I picked it up the next morning, after having breakfast again!

Id post a picture BUT we didnt leave anything on them. The grilled ham and cheese was amazing. The burger my father-in-law had looked really good as well as my wifes blt with avocado too.

The ham was on the verge of spoilt, $3 for a can of soda, no refills. Bread was dry, muffins dry. Yuck. I would rather get a box of donuts from walgreens than eat breakfast here again.

Great little friendly place, remarkably down-to-earth for being so close to such a touristy area. Great food (excellent Hollandaise) with great Maxfield Parrish artwork on the walls.
