First impression: The place smells great. This is good for a BBQ place. Unfortunately, the rest of the experience didnt quite live up to the initial impression. Dont get me wrong, there was a lot of good, but it was accompanied by some meh and some bad Good: My pulled pork was delicious, my friend loved her ribs, the BBQ chips with blue cheese bacon dip were fantastic (though less fantastic as the bacon quickly disappeared), another friend really enjoyed the sweet potato wedges with maple dip (the maple dip also paired nicely with the BBQ chips). The Lynchberg Lemonade was amazing. Im not sure who came up with the idea to put Jack Daniels into Lemonade, but that person should get some sort of award. On the subject of good people, our server was excellent. Meh: The Spicy Cheese Fries had a ton of cheese and were very good, except for the fact they lacked any spice. If they were on the menu as simply Cheese Fries, they would have made the Good list. In the same vein, the cheddar wafers also lacked the cayenne spice mentioned on the menu. They were fine, tasted just like Cheez-Its (Sadly Im a Cheese Nips kind of guy). Honestly, theyre not worth the $3 you pay for them. Theyre definitely more of a bread on the table substitute that should just be there or offered. The Beef Brisket didnt get rave reviews by the two of us that tried it. Bad: The Pit Beans. There is no way I will believe these didnt come out of a can. Not even a good can at that. If the goal was to make a tomato based sauce that tasted like watered down Spaghetti-Os sauce, they succeeded. If the thought of watered down Spaghetti-Os sauce on beans makes you happy, you would like the beans. Really Bad Because I am a Picky Person That No One Likes: The Hot Fudge Brownie Sundae. It was very good, but the brownie was a cakey brownie and not a fudgy brownie. Cakey brownies are a crime against nature. If youre going to make a cakey brownie just call it a small piece of cake, dont make people think theyre going to get a rich, chewy, dense blast of chocolately goodness. Thats just unkind. In the end the evening was enjoyable but Im not certain Id go back to Blue Smoke. If I did, Id be happier grabbing a seat at the bar and having a couple of the appetizers and a Lynchberg Lemonade or going to their spot at New Shea and just getting a Pulled Pork Sandwich.

Credited as the founder of New York City’s barbecue movement, Blue Smoke is a combination of hardcore barbecue and culinary artfulness. I’d previously been to Jazz Standard, Blue Smoke’s basement-level jazz club serving up delicious barbecue and soulful sounds. On this trip, I gave the upstairs restaurant a try and left a happy man. The menu at Blue Smoke takes you along a barbecue-filled path – with ribs, brisket, pulled pork, smoked chicken and sausage populating the menu. The beef brisket comes with your choice of lean or marbled meat, and mashed potatoes topped with crispy onions. Word of advice, go with the marbled brisket. The ring of fat adds a huge burst of flavor. This brisket was out of this world amazing. It literally dissolved in my mouth, no chewing necessary. Incredible flavor. The only downside was the portion size. I would have preferred some more meat for the $20 price. The pulled pork sandwich was also good, although it didn’t come close to the brisket. It definitely is better than the pulled pork at Blue Smoke’s outlet shop at Citi Field. There was a solid amount of meat here and it was doused in a vinegar barbecue sauce. The sweet potato wedges with maple dip were enormous. We literally must have had two full potatoes cut up on our plate. They had a generous sprinkling of course salt on the skin. The maple dip appeared to be mayo-based and had a hint of maple flavor. I had thought the dip would be straight up maple syrup and would have preferred that instead. The best way to close out a meal? With toothpicks and Wet-Naps. Blue Smoke graciously brought these out with our check and it was a really nice touch. The Verdict Blue Smoke has my vote for some of the best beef brisket around. Melt in your mouth deliciousness is what I’m talking about. Prices may be a little expensive for what you get, but that’s one of the only downfalls here. I’d definitely go back for some great barbecue around Madison Square Park.

I came here with my friend during restaurant week and this had been one of the spots bookmarked for a while so I was happy I was trying it. When we first arrived around 5:45pm the place was empty and I was shocked because I know its very popular restaurant. Towards the middle of our dining the place was packed. I was shocked how many children were dining as well. I wasnt pleased with the restaurant week pre-fix menu but I made it work. For an appetizer I had the smoked sausage appetizer which was sooo good. I was annoyed that it was small and my friend who ordered the chipotle wings had a large portion of wings that looked like it couldve been an entree. I tried her wings which were just okay and was happy I ordered the sausage. For my entree, I had the Apple Wood Chicken with mash potatoes which was very tasty. I tried my friends smoked ribs and was happy I didnt order the ribs. For dessert, I had the chocolate cake with the cute small glass of milk that hit the spot. We were given a little pastry from their bakery after dinner which I ate the next day and it was sooo good. I would return to this spot and check out their bakery.

Went to Blue Smoke with friends on a recent Sunday night. We were really looking forward to our meal. We were seated promptly and served drinks right away. Great beer selection and one friend thought his old fashioned was excellent. We ordered the bbq chips with dip and cornbread bites to start. They were yummy! We could not get enough of the honey butter and blue cheese with bacon dip. Two of us ordered the brisket plates and two ordered the backyard chicken plates. The brisket was lean with a spicy rub on the edges. I had mac and cheese and coleslaw for sides. My friends liked the collard greens and baked beans as well. Great presentation on tin plates. The service was excellent throughout and the prices were reasonable for the quality of the whole experience. Our party thoroughly enjoyed the meal start to finish. To top it all off, we were given a tour of the kitchen when the staff realized that we are in the food service industry. The chef was gracious and very accommodating. We appreciated the friendliness of the whole team. They clearly reflect Danny Meyers philosophy of excellent hospitality. I cant wait to go back!
