I wish I can give this place a negative. I was in Chicago for the first time a couple weeks ago and decided to check this place out however...I was waiting in line for about 45 minutes. The bouncer said it was because the place was packed cause there was a birthday going on... he was lying. I watched him let 3 separate groups of a certain type of women cut the line. When I mean cut I mean they pulled the girls from the back of the line and let them in. I also watched a girl go up to the bouncer say please and just like that he let her and her group of 4 in while there is a line of people who were patiently waiting for like 40 minutes. Everybody in line was equally annoyed but no one wanted to say anything and get kicked out of the line. I left the line because I did not want to support this place by spending money buying drinks at the bar. This is not a place anybody in that line should support. I think the dress code for the bouncers to let you cut the line is blond and cleavage so if you dont possess those qualities be prepared to be treated like a second class citizen. This experience is the first thing I mention when people ask about my trip to Chicago. Bottom line: I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE.

If you can get it to this place with out asking for help you are smarter than 90% of the patrons of River North. The door is ridiculously huge and just looks like a window. It also does not shut by itself so avoid sitting anywhere near the front if its winter and you prefer to not freeze! A good margarita is somehow hard to come by in this city, sadly I will not be adding El Hefe to my list of go to places. Bartender told me about a peach margarita that was good, I decided to try it and I was sorry I did. I have a sweet tooth but this was so sugary and tasted like it literally had no tequila in it, for $12, Id hope for a slight buzz. Upon further examination it might have what they call rock candy syrup in it, aka sugar, so maybe avoid any drink with that in it, ick. The huge glass goblets they are served in are exciting though! Chips and Salsa is nice at $4, but the Elote dip ($8) is a must get, creamy and delicious! The staff was all really nice and I may be up for trying the tacos in a pinch but pretty mediocre experience so far.

El Hefe is a typical River North scene type place - youre over paying for average food and service. We came here with a group for a late dinner on a Saturday night (8:45) and already the place was reverting over to "club" mode. It took quite awhile to get our food and drink orders as it was already starting to get packed. The tacos were quite good - the chicken tinga and al pastor being the clear winners. The enchiladas though...yikes. They were burnt to the bottom of the skillet smothered in so much cheese they were almost inedible. I could have overlooked all of this except for the fact that they quite literally pushed us out of our chairs in order to make room for more club-goers. The busboys came and took all our waters even though we were still waiting for our check (which took 20 minutes to come). The final straw really came when they insisted on taking my 7 month pregnant wifes chair. They did up leaving it and apologizing when the group expressed their displeasure but she was left pretty embarrassed by the whole scene.

I had a particularly negative experience here where the bouncer claimed I was distributing my medication and kicked me out. I didnt mind being kicked out, as RockIt Bar was right across the street and a way better time. What I did have a problem with was the bouncer stealing my belongings and not returning it. So, keep your meds at home. I spoke with the General Manager (his name is Justin Massei, you can see the review he did of their own bar below. So, just recognize some of these reviews are padded...). He was less than willing to address my concerns. He was more focused on the fact that I wouldnt leave from standing on the sidewalk. But, why would I leave after they stole my stuff? Other comments of note: after about midnight on the weekends, its bangin. If you have a group of *only girls* they will let you bypass that ridiculously long non-moving line that they keep outside the bar. For dudes, just get there early, otherwise - no chance. Everything is pretty overpriced, but they make up for it with the girl/guy ratio.

A drunken guy who apparently knew the bouncer throws a drink out of my hand as Im trying to not spill it on people due to the amount of people that were there. The guy rudely and purposefully knocked my drink all over myself. This person had been bothering me all night, and even had to audacity to try to dance with my girl. As I said he knew the doorman, so there was no talking to them whatsoever ever. The person who claimed to be the manager (a younger person with lighter hair) was also very rude to me after I tried to calmly explain the situation. He used a few racial slurs directed at me as well and put his hands on me. Never go here. Youre only welcome here if you know the people that work here. This type of treatment is unacceptable, especially to customers who purchased a table and bottle service. Go across the street to Hub51/Sub51. They dont let minors in unlike hefe (probably because they dont check your ID there) I will be reporting this establishment to the Illinois Liquor Control Commission.

We had a table reserved for a birthday. We arrive, when some of our friends are ALREADY at the table. And the lame wannabe tough guy security guys want to pretend the table names not on the list and make us walk away. Of course our friends tell the workers inside and they come get us and let us in, afterwards I took the two ladies I arrived with and LEFT. Racist security guards first of all, second of all they act like they are so cool and prissy its a bar in the middle of Chicago nothing special going on here to be acting as if you are only allowing in elites. Perhaps, if these wacko security guards knew ANYTHING about being an entrepreneur or running any enterprise they would know better then to treat people with such DISRESPECT. The clothing I was wearing under my waist alone was worth more than the wages that these cool guy security guards make in a month. WILL BE CONTACTING RHG to let the real business owners know that they have non business orientated people working for them. One word PETTY

Ive never given a review, but I feel this is necessary. It was St.Pattys day parade so it was crazy out. Most people were drunk, and all places had lines to get in. Fine. We waited in line for almost 2 hours, and FINALLY made it to the front. Someone leaves the bar and cuts under the rope and it unhooks. Out of nowhere, the bouncer comes up to me and my friends, and says we have to leave and puts the rope back up. NO explanation, nothing. He just pushes us away, and starts yelling at us. He saw us get in line from the beginning because we spoke directly to him to find out where the line is, and the cover fees- 2 hours prior to this. Mind you, there were several groups that were wasted and acting out of control, and they didnt get kicked out. We werent drunk, we were just ready to get inside. Needless to say, I am not ever going back. He was rude, and disrespectful.
