After years of waiting for the buzzed-over cupcake shop to arrive in Houston, my first visit didnt disappoint. Neither did my second, third, fourth, fifth...well clearly my subsequent visits reveal that I clearly adore Sprinkles Cupcakes. Whats not to love? Cute decor? Check. Cupcakes decorated to tempt you to break your no-sweets diet, and cupcakes that not only look good but taste good? Check and check. Located across the street from Smith and Wollensky and next to the Apple Store, Sprinkles isnt hard to miss. Parking on the other hand, is a bit harder. Unless youre one of those individuals whose luck never runs when it comes to finding primo parking spaces, chances are youll have trouble finding a parking space. Once a space has been acquired, a sweet reward awaits you inside. The inside of the shop is tiny and thats no exaggeration. When you walk in, the counter and cupcakes are right there in front of you. The display case (located straight ahead as you walk in) is streamlined with wooden display trays that holds each cupcake in unison. The name plaques are wooden too and raised so thats a easier to see and read the mini cakes descriptions. To the far right of the store (again, not that far being that the store is tiny) is another display case with Sprinkles cupcake mixes to purchase and other merchandise. Because the space is small, theres a wooden, built-in table facing the window and Westheimer. Theres only enough space for around 4-5 people to sit. Theres additional seating outside on a bench in front of Sprinkles. When I first made my trip to Sprinkles, I wondered would it be too sweet? Too dry? It was neither. The frosting is smooth, melts in your mouth, and isnt overly sweet. The cake was very moist. The flavors rotate daily and there are also seasonal flavors too. My go-to cupcakes are Dark Chocolate, Dark Chocolate and Banana, Black and White (chocolate cupcake with vanilla frosting), Peanut Butter Chocolate, Vanilla, Red Velvet, Chai and Cinnamon Sugar. Being a chocolate lover, I always go for the dark chocolate and black and white. If youre one to go gaga over frosting, youve got to order a shot of frosting. Theres even small cupcakes that are edible for dogs for less than $3. The attendees take your order and call you when its ready (or at least they did for the sneak peek because it was packed). The cupcakes are nestled in a simple brown box or a dainty paper bag with a Sprinkles sticker to seal it. The prices are no different than the other cupcake shops in town, around $3.25 per cupcake. The one thing that makes them stand out is that they offer giveaways. Follow Sprinkles on Facebook or Twitter to see when theyll offer a free cupcake for the day when you whisper a phrase.

Ive been coming here for quite some time every time Im in Houston, this past weekend on a Sunday was the busiest I have ever seen it. I rarely ever have to wait in line that goes outside, so I guess note to self do not go on a Sunday afternoon.... Any who I waited in the line that went out the door and to my surprise it was only a few minutes to place my order, I did have to wait to receive it and that took a while, but I was only here for the day and had to get my fix. I got the Sprinkles Sundae with the Sprinkles cupcake and the red velvet ice cream. I love the re velvet ice cream. I got the ice cream a lone last time with the red velvet ice cream cone and that was good too. I usually always get a red velvet cupcake everywhere I go, Theres is really good too, if Im lucky that day Ill get the strawberry as well. I got the dog cupcake twice now, for two different dogs and they both seem to love it. Its pretty expensive for a mini cupcake thought $2, but that is the price of the human mini cupcake as well, so I guess thats kind of fair. This location has a cupcake ATM in the back that is open 24/7 but I havent been there since Ive been coming for the ice cream combo lately. The parking here is a nightmare during the weekends but the whole area is a nightmare, since its located next door to the Apple store so that place ruins the parking with its crowds. I wish there was another location and more so one in Austin!

After hearing the hype for Sprinkles, I went with two girlfriends to check it out. The parking situation at the location is cramped, and so is the store. We had to waited in line outside for 5 minutes before entering the shop. Inside was cute (though tiny), and they had similar flavors to those offered at Crave (I had my wedding cupcakes hosted by Crave and my two girlfriends were bridesmaids - very well acquainted with how good Crave is!). I ordered a key lime and a chocolate marshmallow, the girls had a chocolate coconut and a chocolate peanut butter. We took ours home (2 miles away), since there was no where to sit - or stand. The taste was decent - not overly sweet. The texture was okay; the cake was on the dry side and crumbled way too much - to the point you couldnt eat it with out pieces falling all over you. The icing was nothing special. Overall it was just not very memorable. We were all unanimous (including my husband who had the key lime), CRAVE is BETTER! by far. Craves cupcakes have a dense, moist almost brownie-like cake to them and are just so much more decadent. Sprinkles is over-rated and hyped up. (not to mention a pain to get to!) If youre going to eat 400 calories in a sitting and pay $3 for a single cupcake, why not have the best? Skip Sprinkles, go to Crave.

Their selections are pretty good. Ive had them on many occasions. However Id never been to this location, that changed recently - and after my experience here, I wont be coming back or bothering with them at all. I went in one evening with my wife, because she wanted a small treat after the bit of shopping we did nearby. The staff seemed friendly, but were completely unattached to service. The manager at the moment (I think the tag even mentioned general manager, but I could be wrong) was the one who took our order. Well, he took my wifes order. After my wife and I walked in hugging and holding hands, and her mentioning that we were both getting something - the gentleman never bothered to look at me once. I mean, he genuinely went out of his way to not look at me. I was never once asked what was going to be my selection or if I wanted anything else. He locked on to my wife and I was never ever given a second to add in my part. My wife is white. I am not. And though I hate to think this way, I felt discriminated. Genuinely, I dont use that lightly. So beware if you are a minority or in an interracial relationship while you shop here - they may not recognize you as a person.

I went to Sprinkles anticipating amazing cupcakes and was seriously underwelmed. There was, of course, a line. Part of the reason for this is that one person takes your order, then someone else rings it up for you and takes your money, then you stand and wait for them to call your name when your order is ready. As I was watching them fill orders, it seemed like some of the cupcakes were in the back, so maybe they cant just pack them up as you order them. In any event, the three-step process is slow and results in a line that snakes slowly to the counter. I ordered Red Velvet, Lemon Blueberry, and Cinnamon. The Red Velvet was the best of the bunch, but nothing outstanding either cake or frosting-wise. The Lemon Blueberry was not very flavorful. The cake texture was good, the frosting was OK---not terrible, but not great either. The Cinnamon on the other hand was awful. The cake was very dry, so dry I had to wonder if it had really been made that day. Maybe it was just an off day for them, but I dont think Ill be going back to find out.
