Porter Books & Bread is a fantastic locally-owned, independent restaurant. I have had the pleasure of dining here several times and cannot recommend it enough. The owners, Will and Marcy, are passionate about their food and it shows. Their use of only high quality, local ingredients affirms their Indianapolis pride and dedication to amazing food. The backbone of all the sandwiches is the delicious home baked bread. Add to that a variety of Smoking Goose meats, amazing greens, and local cheeses, and you have a recipe for success! My personal favorite sandwich is the Vonnegut, but I have tried many, and you really can not go wrong. In addition to sandwiches, they offer terrific salads, locally made potato chips, and focaccia bread. They also offer awesome breakfast options including: locally sourced coffee (try the cold-brew on the nitro tap), various homemade pastries (the biscotti is great), and bagels from the Scholars Inn. They are located in the historic Ft. Benjamin Harrison area. The building has a renovated interior and stands just across a large green space near the state park. Inside they have comfortable seating surrounded by hundreds of books. It is a wonderful place to eat in or carry out. Porter Books & Bread is a prime example of what local eateries should aspire to. They offer delicious local ingredients at very reasonable prices in a relaxing and unpretentious environment.

Stopped by Porter Books and Bread on a rainy Friday morning and it turned my entire day around. This place hits the nail on the head for relaxing and cozy while providing great food and coffee. What I was most impressed with was the details in the food, beverages and decor. Every aspect of the place goes above and beyond. The bread is freshly made and we ended up grabbing some on the way out to include in our dinner for the night. After deciding that I would be back because it is the perfect place to grab lunch after a Hike at ft. Ben, I was lucky enough to attend a conference which was catered by Porter, Books and Bread. I would 100% recommend them for a great lunch/breakfast and catering. Super impressed, cannot wait to go back. We have had the Austen, Vonnegut, and Dante sandwiches, would get any of them again. Great owners, great books and the best bread. A must visit, for sure.

I had the opportunity to visit this restaurant twice during my stay. I loved everything about it. I had 2 of their sandwiches and the word I would use to describe them is refreshing. They offer a selection of very unique sandwiches, but not in that hipster way of combining completely unnecessary ingredients where you often wonder whats the point. These sandwiches were well thought out and had exactly what they needed, nothing more nothing less. Everything they offer is housemade and fresh to order. While there, enjoy a great environment where you can pick up and read one of the many books and series they have on their shelves, or get some work done with there free WiFi and delicious homebrew coffee, including a cold brew on tap that tastes way too familiar to my stout beverages I enjoy.

This place is amazing; dont even think about... you have to stop here. Delicious local coffees (I love the french press and cold brew), the sandwiches are to die for (doesnt even matter which one, they are all good), and the bread and scones are worth a trip all by themselves. And they have used books!!! Im pretty sure this is what heaven looks like :-) Everything they use to package a to-go order is either compostable or recyclable, which is awesome! I really appreciate that my to-go order doesnt generate a bunch of foam and plastic waste.

I always like independent local businesses. Visited Porters this afternoon and could not have been more pleased. Loved the atmosphere (it reminded me very much of places I used to hang out in at college). The staff was friendly and efficient. The food was very good and reasonably priced. If supporting local business, great service, and tasty food is important to you, be sure to stop by!

I love the atmosphere and sandwiches at this place. Perfect for breakfast or lunch, probably not dinner. The owners are super nice. The coffee and freshly made pastries are delicious. Its great for the neighborhood and a good place to hang out if you work from home or study at Ivy Tech. Its definitely the best place in this area where you can have the NY coffee shop experience.

What a gem! No espresso yet, but 3 brews from local roaster, plus 2 cold brews with one on NITRO (which makes it creamy) awesome decor, polished cement, exposed brick and stone, reclaimed wood floor, found object furniture... Im from Seattle, and this place would be welcomed into our coffee community. Excited to come back some day, and try espresso.

My family went there for lunch on a weekday. The place has a great atmosphere that made me really want to like it. I was a little disappointed the service was meh. I was hoping for more engagement and maybe less awkwardness. My sandwich was pricey and just okay. My girls and husband did eat the food they ordered so bonus! I may stop by again for just coffee.

Neat little place with interesting concept. Good coffee and snack foods. Only place I have ever been to that offered coffee on nitro pour...that is a great offering. Not the best place to take kids (we stopped in after a picnic and walk) as there are lots of things for them to get into and the spiral staircase is a bit of a scare. Overall, cool place.

Best place in the city for breakfast or lunch in my opinion. You can tell they take the quality of food very serious. They go above and beyond to make sure everything is fresh and locally sourced. They roast there own coffee on site. How cool is that?! Im not one to buy restaurant t-shirt but they have an awesome selection with very unique designs.

Porter Books and Bread is my favorite local lunch spot, whether its a work day or a laid back Saturday with a friend. Fresh ingredients in yummy salads, sandwiches and baked goods, as well as coffees, friendly owners, comfy leather chairs in a gorgeous refurbished building in historic Ft Ben brings a sense of community and comfort.

Great coffee shop. They recently started roasting their own coffee which is really good. Alongside this their food is really good and they constantly keep expanding their menu. Everyone who works there is supper friendly which makes it a great place to stay and relax and work or just hangout and enjoy their coffee and food.

My new favorite place in Indy! The first thing you notice when you walk in is how cool the place looks - exposed brick, spiral staircase, and bookshelves galore. The atmosphere is super chill, and the sandwiches are top notch. Im so glad we discovered this place! Cant wait to go back.

Porter is such a gem in Lawrence - absolutely delicious food (crumbled bacon on a bagel? Why yes, please!) and the perfect place to work or simply talk with friends. Highly recommend anyone popping by and seeing what theyre about. The macaroons alone will have you coming back.

Cozy, welcoming atmosphere and books on the shelves. Perfection. I had everything bagel, cream cheese and macaroon. My husband had a cinnamon roll. We both had coffee. Everything was fresh and delicious!! Thank you for a relaxing place.
