It wouldnt let me go lower then 1 star but if i could i would... first and very last time i ever go here... start off waiting for a decent time in their "awesome waiting area." get to the tables and it took 10 mins to order our drinks as she kept walking past us making sure not to make eye contact. Order a soda (diet coke) and water. Their syrup or something was bad because the diet coke almost made me puke. Took another 15 minutes for her to come back to order And get something new to drink (which she forgot both times after coming back to the table). She brought us the most disgusting clear soup weve both ever had... not only cold but the taste was horrible.. the salads dressing watered down... still no new drink. Finally after about another 15 minutes the food comes out (2 $25 meals) not one streak of steam coming off our plates. Steak and chichen were cold. When i approached them they told me because my steak was cooked medium it wasnt going to be hot. But assumed 20% off just my meal would make everything ok... and then started throwing more excuses and basically telling me im a lier... when we leave i couldnt even go get other food cause we both werent feeling good and now me and my girlfriend are here the next day laying in bed still feeling absolutely horrible... but according to the staff this is what youre suppose to expect and what you pay for

Ive eaten at Kumo several times in the past few years, and Ive noticed poorer quality in both food and service the last couple of visits. Tonights visit was so unpleasant I dont plan to return. The food was acceptable (3 1/2 stars) but the service was terrible. My companion and I waited for 15 minutes to be seated in the sushi dining area (the bartender eventually took us to our table) though the place wasnt busy, waited again to order, waited again for tea. Our waitress was curt, glum, and rarely seen - we had to ask for more tea and part of our order which she forgot. She didnt ask if we preferred western cutlery nor did she ask if wed like water with our meal. I watched the other wait staff and didnt see any of them smiling or in any way attempting to make their customers feel welcome. The sushi we had was acceptable, but the quality of the fish wasnt as good as it used to be. The salad was the biggest disappointment - overlarge chunks of iceberg lettuce swimming in dressing, topped with half an anemic tomato slice and a cucumber slice. This used to be a great restaurant, but it seems to be suffering from poor management. I hope it will once again become a place that is good both to visit and to work in, but management needs to get serious about good service.

"Hostesses" here need to learn the job description of a hostess. I ordered carry out. Walked in within the time frame they gave me and my food was already sitting there but there were no employees to be found. After standing at the register for 6 minutes (I timed it), hostess FINALLY comes up from the back and walks right past me. Proceeds to cash out the couple sitting at the bar and then walks away to seat them at a table. She then comes back again and gets a drink and menu for the other lady sitting at the bar. Meanwhile, I am still standing there with my credit card ready, food still sitting there. She finally comes over to me and I informed her that I had been waiting a long time. She gives me some excuses about how the woman at the bar was there before me. I asked her how she knew since she was not around when I had walked in or for a while after that. She babbles more excuses at me and I just said "can we just do this please?!". Waited for a total of 12 minutes and it took less than 30 seconds to swipe my card and pass me the receipt to sign. Isnt the point of carry out so that you dont have to wait? Sushi there is okay but not worth it. Plenty of other places in Kalamazoo/Portage to get good sushi with better service.

waited 47 minutes past the time of our reservation, and then was only seated after begging. we had small children with us, however they were better mannered that the reservation staff. They had one dimensional thinking, when the party at the table "we were assigned to " ran way over, they never thought to put us at another one that was open for walk-ins. They never updated us or gave an explanation, or offered pop or water while we waited. The soup was water with jasmine petals floating in it, and the salad was head lettuce, one slice of tomato, and yellow dressing on it. Rice is rice, grilled vegetables were good, and the beef was on par with grilling in your back yard. The pyrotechnics were excellent, and the wait staff was courteous. I thought it was over priced. When asked how long would we have waited if we hadnt made reservations they said about 30 minutes and then advised us not to make reservations the next time.

When we first arrived, we were told that there would be a 20 minute wait, which is fine...but they didnt take our names down and there were three other couples already waiting which led to some confusion at seating time. When we did sit down, we ordered some plum sake and gyoza which were sent to the table relatively quickly and tasted nice. However, after we ordered the sushi, we waited nearly an hour for the food to arrive and didnt see the waitress at any point to give us updates or check to see if we needed water. When the sushi arrived some time later, it was relatively tasty with the various rolls that we received, but didnt seem particularly fresh. Overall, the experience left a lot to be desired and we will probably give Kumo a pass the next time we go out to eat.

I worked for the Benihana Corp. for 10 yrs. and have traveled the world and have eaten at every BHana competitor imaginable. This place has great prices, authentic art style of cooking like it used to be at Bhanas originally. They include the kids, have fun cooking. Steve, the Mgr., was very accomodating fro my wife and my first experience there & the cook that wasa assigned to our table, albeit from China, Jason, was better than any Japanese tepanyaki chef that Ive ever had. He had us in stiches laughing with all at the table feeling comfortable about being strangers. We are new to the area and we will be back with our kids and in-laws on 5-10-09. We first went there December 2008 for Christmas shopping at a very busy time without reservations!

It has been an anual birthday tradition to eat at Kumo Habachi. The last 5 years have been outstanding but we will not return due to a series of issues we encountered. We always sit at the grill for the entertainment and our chef was not interactive in any way. The chicken was undercooked and had to be returned to the grill. After the second round of cooking, it was returned to my plate still pink and doused in heavy sauce. We asked for a discount on our bill and received $5.00 off to have it then washed away once we used a $10 coupon. The service and food were very disappointing especially for the price per meal. Our last visit to Kumo Habachi was memorable but not in a good way!
