This was my 10th visit over the past 7 years. In the beginning, the staff was 100% Japanese, with excellent service and delicious sushi. The staff is now 80% Japanese, so not everybody speaks the language as I do. Some of the sushi is fresh. For example, today the salmon was great, the tuna was OK, but the flounder and albacore were only so-so, and the saba (bonito in English?) was old enough to smell bad. The hot udon noodles were way overcooked, almost to the point of being mushy, according to my Japanese wife. Service is still better than most American restaurants, but not up to Japanese standards. This was our final trip to Mikaku Sushi... there is better sushi and udon to be found in the DMV area.

I am not a sushi expert, but I have been eating sushi regularly for a few years and have had really good and not so good tastings. Mikaku was superb. I was in town on business for the afternoon and stopped by for lunch. The tuna and yellowtail was very, very fresh and had great flavor. I was not as impressed by the gyoza; there was some herb in it I just did not particularly like. The price was very good. I am from Richmond and pay just as much for lower quality here. Lunch was $35 with gyoza appetizer, 4 pieces sashimi, a rainbow roll, tea and tip. Service was excellent when I was there and every employee on the floor thanked me on my way out. Thank you Mikaku and I will be back with my wife. :)

DH and I have been eating here for many, many years and its one of our favorite restaurants in the area. Beautiful interior, excellent service and food. They welcome well-behaved kids (talking is fine but not running around) and weve brought ours from the time they were small. Unless you happen to go during a special day (like Valentines Day or perhaps at the peak of lunch hour) it tends to be calm and peaceful, with no wait. The chirashi and the wasabi shumai are two of our go-to dishes. The only thing I personally would improve (DH thinks its fine) would be to make the chirashi rice a bit more intensely flavored - Ive had it that way elsewhere and prefer it that way.

I went with my husband. The setting was kind of nice, with the place having wood features and sliding paper windows. The green tea was good, but a little too hot at first. The korokke was tasty but a little thin, so it was more like a potato patty. The spicy miso ramen and shoyu ramen were okay. The egg in the ramen was overcooked. We had both ordered extra noodles. Bad idea. I could only eat half of them. The broth was okay. The spicy tuna roll was pretty good. It had some nice flavor. The waitress had kind of forgot about a receipt that was left atop the roll and ended up peeling it off when she served us.

This is one of the real Japanese restaurants in the NOVA area. The decor is very Japanese and simple; they even have a private sitting area with tatami mats where you have to take off your shoes. Food is very authentic; you can order otsumami, Japanese tapas style food (little dishes), fresh sushi and also noodle soups. Sushi is really good, their hand-made gyoza is yummy and the udon soups are home-made, even the udon noodles are made-to-order, from the scratch. Unbelievably good and again, this is a real Japanese restaurant. Unfortunately, they need some improvement with their service...:(

We started going here when the girls were very small. I keep going back. The food is beautifully prepared. The owners are the very best of people and I love it I feel like I just took a mini vacation. It is quite and peaceful the food is the very best. Excellent all the way around and truly a great experiance for all of the years we have been going to Mikaku. I travel a lot and get to eat in the best places with customers and this is one of my very favorit spots. Plus the girls love it. They also love the owners. VCL and MAV

Seems like the new management has done okay. I had the daily bento and it was delicious, though I dont love California rolls and it was clear those were prepared beforehand and served as orders came in since the avocado was already browning when I arrived. Next time Ill ask to sub California rolls with some nigiri or a real fish roll.

Lovely, helpful staff. Food was delicious. The menu on the outside in the window does not fully list everything they carry and that was slightly misleading, but thankfully they did carry the ramen for which we came. Our server politely suggested tips for eating, to be more in the Japanese style.

Older facility needs some updating and polish. Service is spotty but ok. Ive never had salty sushi rice before, it changed the flavor of the sushi perceptibly. Tamago was delicious. Some of the food was a little too old fashioned, especially the thick "tempura" batter. The food and value are ok.

Decent to good sushi. Fresh but nothing special. Tempura take out was pretty undercooked, raw shrimp inside doughy batter. Had to throw away pieces of a $15 lunch. Price tag also felt pretty steep for 3 shrimp and 5-6 vegetables and rice. Lunch specials are not available for take-out.

We showed up 15 mins before closing to grab a quick bowl of Ramen. Needless to say, we were turned away even though their hours state open til 10pm. We watched one of the chefs walk out before the restaurant was even closed. Poor business practices, we wont be going back... ever!

I had lunch at Mikaku with a colleague and ordered the Tonkatsu ramen and shrimp tempura appetizer. It was very delicious. The staff greeted us upon entering and were very pleasant through-out our dining experience. We would definitely come back again.

By far the best Japanese restaurant Ive eaten at in the area, and I lived in Japan for 15 years, so I know what its supposed to taste like. The Japanese speaking staff when we visited definitely set this place apart, too.

A recent trip to Japan proved that this is the best Japanese restaurant in Northern Virginia. While others like Mama Wok in Reston are good, this blows all others out of the water. Fresh fish, authentic decor and food.

My favorite place to come to lunch when Im in Herndon. Their menu changed a bit after changing owners but I find they do all the basic dishes well. Friendly staff, good service, and delicious food. Thumbs up.

The food was tasty and the staff was really friendly as well as quick. The price isnt bad for sushi, but you can expect to pay at least $20 per person for a meal. The place is good, but not amazing.

Slow service. Waited 30 minutes at lunch and food still wasnt ready. Server lied to me a number of times about how much longer until my food would be ready. Finally had to leave with out eating.

Staff, management, and menu seems to have changed in recent times. Service is far from what it used to be. Food is still okay, but the overall experience isnt drawing me back like it used to.
