The first time I came here, I was with a friend of mine who recommended that we eat our lunch here and I had no idea what I was walking in to. This place is awesome! Every time I walk into this place I feel like a kid in a candy store. This Italian mega-emporium surpasses even my most extravagant expectations. Pantry staples like cannellini beans and dried mushrooms are pricey but quality is guaranteed. In the cheese and dairy departments I recommend "salvatore brooklyn ricotta" and black truffle butter. The fist department is one of the best in NY (better than Citarella); its filled with a fresh items such as alaskan salmon and some of the best tuna I have had and the Eataly staff is knowledgable, patient and helpful. The fish department is also a must for specialty items like bottarga and glass eels (see Batalis "Molto Gusto" for recipes using those in pasta). If you are dining at Eataly, I recommend the daily bruschetta at Le Vedura or the Fritto Misto at Il Pesce. Everything is served with the most flavorful toasted garlic bread that is miraculously both crispy and moist all at the same time. Before leaving, make sure to take a look at the beautiful variety of fresh produce, especially the exotic mushrooms and exquisite selection of pre-washed (what could be better?) lettuces. I think the Eataly staff wants you to start with your produce shopping, but even with their clever double-stack shopping cart, you will find it difficult to navigate your way through the rest of this Italian food mecca with everything you pick up in your first few minutes. Sure sometimes it gets pretty hectic but for the things you find in there its worth the stress. Every time Im in there I find something new and exciting to try and always end up loving it. Great fresh home made food that you can either sit and eat or take home. If your in the area make it your business to stop in there.

The service I received was as bad as the presentation was good. I wandered around bought some gelato and nougat, and visited the rotisserie area. The Beef looked delicious but I did not want a sandwich, so I asked the server behind the counter if I could buy some cooked beef by the pound. His name was Brian, he seemed to be the manager of that space, and he told me to come back at 4 and I could buy the beef by the pound, since the lunch sandwich rush was over at that time. I told him that I would be back, Brian told me that would be fine, and I went to find a bite to eat. I was by the vegetable counter and the waitress invited me to sit at the vegetable bar. I thanked her and sat down on one of the bar stools. The waitress behind the bar asked me what I wanted, she told me it was all delicious, as I began to order another server from behind the vegetable bar came rushing over and told all three of us (both waitresses and me) that I had to get up because the vegetable bar had closed at 2:30. Three minutes earlier. This embaressed the waitresses and disconcerted me, oh well, I had beef at 4, so I decided to continue wandering, shopping and buying. I bought some cookbooks, visited the wine shop, selected some fine barolos from the secure glass case to enjoy with the beef later and at 4 I wandered back to the rotisserie counter. Worst bad service moment, Brian was behind the counter, he had several cooked Rib Roasts on the platter, and seemed pained to see me again. He told me that "Its not going to happen, I wont sell you any beef by the pound, sorry, but its just not going to happen". So I handed him the basket of food that I had selected to go with the beef, did not go back to buy the barolos and left. The presentation is not worth the failure of basic courtesy from the staff. None of need to shop where we are not treated well.

Eataly offers some incredible Italian specialty items and gourmet restaurants, bringing some authentic Italian flavors to the heart of Manhattan. Food Network celebrity Mario Batali is one of the owners of the market and you see his picture scattered throughout the building. The market is regularly bustling with people and it offers a great chance to pick up some items for shopping or experiencing a special Italian meal. When we visited Eataly, we sampled a few items but decided we weren’t hungry enough to eat at any of the restaurants. Instead, we picked up a couple slices of focaccia from the bakery. The first slice of focaccia was rather simple - topped with fresh mozzarella and marinara sauce. The cheese tasted great but I prefer more spice in the sauce, which basically tasted like canned tomatoes to me. The other slice of focaccia was topped with prosciutto and fresh mozzarella. I’m usually not a big fan of prosciutto but I thought this was delicious. The prosciutto was tender and not too salty and tasted great with the mozzarella. The bread was very good but it was more oily than I normally prefer. We paid $8 for two slices, which made this an extremely cheap dinner. A visit to Eataly is something I would recommend to any foodie who visits New York City. The energy of the market is special and it feels like you’ve been transported to the heart of Italy. To experience the best food the market has to offer, it’s probably best to plan ahead and pick a restaurant to eat at. But if you just want to try something and not break the budget, picking up some focaccia at the bakery is a great option.

Did not enjoy my time here at all. The place was extremely over crowded with people shoulder to shoulder and no real designation of walk ways so people would just walk into you. The multiple eateries also werent really roped off so shoppers would just walk through your tables while you ate. kind of an awkward moment. First we tried to grab a drink at the rooftop beer garden. We were put on a wait for space at the bar but when we finally got upstairs it was extremely packed. the upstairs host (different from the one downstairs who put us on the wait for the bar) said that being put on the list didnt guarantee a spot at the bar just that they wouldnt reach capacity. It would have been nice to be told that downstairs before we waited for 30 minutes. We then decided to have lunch at the pasta place and our service was horrible. Our waitress barely ever came over to check on us (the busser had to bring out drinks and no one came to ask if we wanted a second round). My dish was extremely salty but no one came to check on us so there was no one I could complain to. When we asked 3 different people for the check they all said theyd find our waitress (why couldnt the print it out for us?) and finally she just dropped the check and left without saying anything. Id prefer the real Italian districts throughout the city to this commercial nightmare. Ive been told its a much better experience to go on a weekday and not during peek hours so maybe Ill give it another shot down the road. But not anytime soon.
